Under the table or not, it seemed like Alonso didn't want to remain with the Scuderia if LDM wasn't going to be there.

Oh, very much so. I'm just wondering if he's not exploiting the difference between expressed wishes and actual contracts. Which if you're paid as much as Alonso, would probably be a lot of money.

Well, that explains why Sauber are struggling - they're building cars for van der Garde, Gutierrez, Sutil, Sirotkin and Ericsson. No wonder it's so expensive.

You should see how many cars McLaren and Ferrari are building between them, some for the same drivers.

"It could go down to 14. If we lose another two teams that is what will happen."

It's not like we've definitely lost Caterham and Marussia, Ted Kravitz seemed optimistic about Marussia staying and I'm sure Tony Fernandes said on SkySportsF1 that they have 6-12 people interested in buying Caterham (but they do only have 2 weeks to find one). We also have Forza Rossa and Haas waiting to come in so I'm not concerned about the numbers dipping to anything like 14.

And guess who Forza Rossa have as their team principle. (Hint, it begins with a C, ends with an S, and has a OLIN KOLLE in the middle.)

Listen to the opening story in this weeks Radio Le Mans if you think that. Basically Caterham can be saved. Marussia are doomed.

To be fair to Ericsson, he did have a rough start and he has gotten better. But F1 Rejects ran an interesting editorial on Sauber's history of driver choices, where they pointed out that the team has typically opted for some kind of combination of high-calibre experienced driver and promising rookie. But they broke that mould this year with Gutierrez and Sutil - Gutierrez was promising in GP2 and GP3, but disappointed in Formula 1; and Sutil, an ageing journeyman driver who no-one missed and no-one wanted to return and who has predictably achieved nothing.

Although I have heard that Ferrari had a Sauber seat lined up for Jules Bianchi. I suspect that seat has now been taken by Ericsson.

Really?

Talent tends to show itself quickly, and JEV hasn't really demonstrated himself to be a top-notch driver. If he had, he would have been promoted already and we would be having this discussion about Ricciardo.

He's also 4 years older than Kvyat, so that plays a part as well. He either stays on as the veteran driver that can help rookie talent, or he goes off to something else. I don't see Red Bull promoting him.

Especially since they're either banking on Kvyat matching Ricciardo, or Verstappen warranting a rapid promotion. Promoting JEV is probably third on their list of preferred outcomes.
