The Formula 1 calendar development threadFormula 1

Thank you Wardez. The question is what race can be sacrificed? I really don't see an option of a track to drop as I believe Hungaroring and Monza shouldn't be dropped. However, it is possible that both Spa and Nurburgring do get dropped which would be a terrible thing to happen.

Has there been any word on New Jersey lately? Kind of worrying that they have been rather quiet since it was announced they were off the 2013 schedule. Now with the sudden reports that Mexico is getting closer to securing a race makes me think New Jersey may not happen.

Hungary can definitely be dropped, too many people complain about it already.

And New Jersey needs a strong public leader, seems like nothing's gonna happen and they could want it to see that way.

I don't think it'll end up happening to be honest, unless someone steps in. Guys were in over their heads.

Most fans would have Hungary dropped but Bernie won't, they're a country that keep paying, the language he speaks in. The contract runs until 2021.

I'd rather they not bother with the Teamsters GP at this point anyway. Already pushed off the 2013 calender for 2014 and they haven't used the extra time to do anything so far, and I know which one I'd rather have between a chance for a return to Hermanos Rodriguez and that regardless.

They'll screw it up. Its almost as if they don't want it there to begin with. They won't get another chance if they fail.

Or - and stop me if this is too radical an idea - Bernie is going to keep the Hungarian GP because he intends to honour the contract. I can't recall him ever dropping a race that was both willing and able to meet the terms of their agreement for any reason.

I don't know about that. Bernie seems to really want the race there (and for good reason, I suppose) because I can't imagine him giving any other track a second chance if they had put similarly little effort into getting what needed to be done, done.

Not F1, but the group organizing it in such a poor way.

How would this fit in? There are 3 races now (apparently) planned for 2014 and I doubt F1 will have a 22 race schedule so what race(s) are on the chopping block?

I suppose it all comes down to which tracks contracts are nearly over and out and don't have a forsee-able future to continue, and which gain such little attendance / ticket sales that staging a Grand Prix there would become a loss rather than a gain in the eyes of Bernie.

Was this not one of the major reasons the Turkish GP was removed, lack of funding?

I don't know about "most fans". Hungary is the only race in the region (eastern-central europe) and so the race is very well attended.

The track is good, but F1 has outgrown it and the lack of overtaking creates semi-processional races. I'm not going to blame the track, modern F1 racing at Brands Hatch or Laguna Seca would be no better (probably worse actually). But there aren't many alternate options in the region; Red Bull Ring and Brno haven't made any serious push for F1 and there isn't anything in Poland or eastern Germany. Hungary has been doing a good job and I feel they should keep the race until someone else in the region steps up.

I live in Manhattan. The hurricane really messed the area up even though port imperial is sort of safe from where the bigger part of the river is. Not to mention the rest of New Jersey that was basically torn apart. The least of their problems right now is a race. It's not going to happen.

I cycle on the west side highway where you can see port imperial and there is no construction going on from what I can tell.

I did hear they still have a team of people working to push the race forward for NJ. I did have a chance to meet the president, Tom C., before he stepped down. Even though he left his post he mentioned that people are still working to make it happen. There would be no better way to bring back revenues and increase tourism than a race highlighting NYC's skyline.

If there is something going on, they sure are keeping everyone in the dark. This race really needs to get promoted, not only for this GP to be successful, but for F1 as a whole to grow in the united states. Nothing has been publicly announced since they stated it was not going to happen in 2013. I hope I am wrong on that last point.

Has anyone been near the area seeing if the pit paddock is under construction as anticipated? I live nearby but I don't pass it frequently enough.

From what I can see from across the river, nothing is being done. Although taking the ferry that goes there just to check it out would not be a big deal. When spring break comes and I have time, I will go and take some pictures and post them here for you guys.

Google maps shows a construction crane on site, but I have no idea when that is from.

Construction of the pits started last summer (2012). From what I understand and how Bernie works, is the circuits are not allowed to promote anything, and I mean anything before you are officially announced as race. Meaning the NYC race could not begin to sell tickets (or promote for that matter) until they are listed on the calendar of races for that year. As you can imagine it makes it much harder to really excite the fans when everyone has to keep quiet.

My understanding is that what makes this race difficult is the politics of dealing with two different cities on the NJ side. The road does need to be repaved in order for this race to kick off, based on the core sample that was taken last spring (2012). The engineers drilled down into the streets to get a better understanding of what the road conditions are. For those who drive on these streets would know the middle of the street is crowned (meaning there's a peak in the middle of the road to help rain water run off to the sides) and it would be difficult for F1 cars.

Here is what Red Bull did to promote the race

They said the crowning wouldn't be a factor there and they already announced pricing back in October 2011 but no ticket sales.

More on what's going on with New Jersey.

It would appear that the delay in resuming construction is down to the need to get all of the necessary permits, which is a complex process involving multiple state and federal government agencies for each section of the circuit, because bureaucracy.

I am hoping they can get this back on track soon. I will be the first in line to buy tickets when they are available.

That was the plan for this year. The plan for 2014 might change - Bernie could easily move the Canadian Grand Prix back to July.

It might actually be better for the teams to arrange the calendar so that the European season is split in half: do Spain, Monaco, Great Britain and Germany first, then cross the pond to do Canada and New Jersey, and then go back to Europe for Hungary, Belgium, Italy and Russia.

That would not work, for all of the smaller teams it would be a logistical nightmare. When I was at Mclaren I saw the amount of stuff they ship about and how complex it is to get all the crew to the right places and it would be apsolutely stupid to not try and put New Jersey along with the rest of the America's races. Esspecially to then have to go back where they were prior to Europe for the next race.

They aren't going to run New Jersey in November, that's too risky. They will run it in conjunction with Montreal because its only a 375 mile drive from there.
