Seriously. These guys are putting in the effort to translate, encode, and host these shows. Viewing the video and maybe seeing one 30 second ad keeps them running. I totally get using other means to acquire things that are out of print or haven't been licensed/released here, but if there's an easy legal means of watching something and it'll support the distributor, I don't see any reason not to. If you want a permanent copy, buy the DVD/BDs when they come out, prices on boxsets are ridiculously good these days. I remember paying $30 a VHS for two or three episodes back in the day, the same price for a whole season on DVD is amazing.

Agreed.

We've heard this stuff over and over, some of us just don't want to go the legal route with some things. I for one, if I really love something, I will probably support it. Or the occasional anime buy here and there. I guess I've just become a bit of a quality bitch, and with slow internet, streaming isn't really an option for me anymore, especially when it comes to random advertisements, I can't handle that stuff anymore.

To your first comment regarding the effort they put into it: Sure, they're doing all that and I appreciate that they are(especially since they do have streaming rights). But at the same time there's subbing groups that are higher quality. And I don't just mean pixel count. I'm talking translation, phrasing, encode, sub-fonts, karaoke, etc. A lot of that is much more aesthetically pleasing than any "legal" option. If the show is worth it and I want to own it(funds are also important, as I am waiting to get a job before divulging in anime and related merchandise), I will buy it.

I stream it on CR and download it.

I do. Even if I didn't, it doesn't defeat the purpose. Because legal. You "pay" for it with ads.

The "ads" pay for the site not the legality of the title. (Probably the content of Japanese marketers but not American ones)

Still a legal stream, which is what he was talking about. It's not like I don't support the industry. Started buying Gunpla again and entire shows on dvd/bluray again. Then I pay for CR and other things. Soon will start buying figures.

The thing is that even if they're not getting revenue from the site, every time somebody watches a video on a streaming site, that adds to a statistic that the producers of anime are looking at when they decide what to make and how to distribute it. We're at a point where the industry is considering the foreign market more and more, and we're now affecting what actually gets made in addition to just what gets translated. The Japanese market has traditionally relied on DVD/BD sales to fund productions, and they've really fallen off in the last few years, so they've been looking much more to foreign markets as a core source of funding.

Crunchyroll and other sites are licensing content from the producers and distributors. When they get the money from ads, that money goes right to paying for the content.

I sense there could either be an alliance of the two which could possibly be the end of TGAT, or there will be beef and be the greatest war between TC and TF. When the latter takes place....

it will also be the end of TGAT.

I'm done with Gosick. It was just simply amazing.

I'm really sad that Cordellia and both Brians died, but they were protecting Victorique whilst doing so.

So jumping subjects totally, "cool stuff of the week" post time. Was in Japantown in San Francisco (for the third time in the past four weeks!) and Kinokuniya bookstore had some good stuff.

This is what I'm really super stoked about. Nagato enjoys, as somebody on tumblr once put it, "waifu 4 laifu" status with me, so I've really been looking forward to the release of Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-Chan. A manga that takes one of my favorite characters and makes her even more moe? Always good in my book!

Otherwise, it's just come cool manga pack-ins, from two consecutive months of Young Ace, which is running the Fate/Zero manga. I'm not a huge fan of Zero (much prefer F/SN and Carnival Phantasm) but I'm clearly a big Saber nut, so these are a must-buy.

Last month's came with awesome phone straps. I'm a sucker for Saber sans pants.

And this month's issue came with this awesome fan. I love the illustration this is based on. GF was gonna do a version of this, but swimsuits of this type are something you can't really make yourself and getting one custom made was going to take too long and cost too much, unfortunately.

I'm going to post an expanded version of this in an update on my site in a minute. Check otakushots.com in half an hour or so if you want to see it. (Beware of dollfie content that may freak out the uninitiated, though...)

Edit - posted. http://otakushots.com/2012/09/16/september-2012-status-update/

The last episodes of Gosick totally rule 👍

Victorique crying still makes me really really sad.

Alright, a quick review of the latest anime series/movies I've seen.

ex-Driver movie/series - A great series, although the villains are kinda,,,not smart. I mean, in the movie, the idiot robs a race for ex-Drivers from all over the world and initially tries to get away in an AI truck...Really? Are you really that stupid? Also, running away from the truck in a black Corvette with flames on it isn't really smart, either because...well...there's no one else in the world with that vehicle, is there? And this is level of stupidity seemed to flow through the series and was evened out by the fact that the ex-Drivers weren't really all that bright. Especially the non-Japanese ex-Drivers, which, for some reason in the movie, couldn't stop the run away truck? I mean you had what 8-10 ex-Drivers in attendance, you'd think that with that many ex-Drivers, they'd be able to easily stop any runaway AI vehicle, but, no, they decide to either make rookie mistakes or can't put the competition behind them for 3 seconds. But, other than that, a good series.

Paprika - This...was really good. A psychological thriller that's easy to follow. I don't think I've ever seen that. Everything clicked. And it didn't really try to screw with the viewer's head, just the characters which made it REALLY good.

Perfect Blue - I actually like this, if only for the twist ending. The confusion generated by following Mima creates this fog and you really don't see the twist coming at all, and even looking back on the movie, there are only subtle hints as to what's going on, which makes it a true surprise. Very well done. The only reason why I won't give it a full 5 star rating is because...it was a tad confusing towards the end. You kinda had no idea what was going on. Although, that confusion was purposeful, I don't know if the level of confusion was needed. Then again, if you were a pop idol turned movie star with all the stress and crap that went on in that movie, you'd probably be just as confused.

Paprika and Perfect Blue have very similar story lines that talk about fantasy becoming reality. Whereas Paprika steps back and watches everything unfold from a more...third person viewpoint, like someone looking in, Perfect Blue almost tells a first person account of everything...and does it rather well.

I would recommend these to anime fans. Be warned both Paprika and Perfect Blue do have nudity, though.

Weren't the other country's representative ex-Drivers... less experienced then the main characters? Also the bad guy has much better chances of getting away in a Corvette then an AI driven vehicle, he'd be taken down if he had an AI, but his incompetence got the best of him anyways.

Were they? I don't remember hearing that, but it could be. Granted, he could get away more easily in a gas powered car...but...I mean, all they'd have to do is find that particular car, right? Then again, all the other cars being used had much less horsepower than the Corvette...still, it's a car that would stand out...not a good thing when trying to escape. But, the point really is...if you're going to rob a place...what is essentially a police station, probably isn't the best choice. (Also, out the cars clearly shown in the Chinese guy's garage...why steal the Alfa when there was a perfectly good Aston DB4 Zagato right there?) And he DID initially run off in a AI vehicle.

But it's not just the movie...it the series had some pretty stupid villains, too. Which, of course, just means that the point of the series is the pretty cars, but I would have loved some more effort put into the villains...and I kinda wanted to see that Lotus Eleven race around in the series...and I would have loved to see Nina participate...but I got to see that in the little extra episode on the move's DVD.

Corvette was back-up regardless. And on the Alfa bit, who's knows. But wouldn't it be because Soichi preferred smaller cars?

Maybe. But the DB4 wasn't that big of a car, really. But, then again, an Alfa kinda fits better with a Cathram, Europa and Stratos...but...still, I would've taken the DB4.

Yeah. On the DVD I got from Netflix there was an episode called Nina and Rei Danger Zone. It's a full half-hour episode that takes place before Rei had her Ducati and Nina and Rei were a team.
