Yeah and while that is an ongoing issue, that shouldn't mean people shouldn't give up trying to create a better image of anime.
So how would you go about changing this? Right now one of the only places that can get people into the stuff, and viewing it different is Toonami on [adult swim], which begins every Saturday night at midnight (Soon 11:30 when Space Dandy airs before it airs on Japanese TV.), when normal people are asleep.

It also doesn't help that "mature animation" here, to most people anyways, usually means South Park or Family Guy (neither of which I've ever watched by the way; despite for all practical purposes every other person my age does)

Hell, over here in Europe we just have DVD releases, Crunchyroll, and Daisuki. The only anime that ever gets shown on TV is Pokemon and Ghibli.

I only got into anime through chance after my friends and I fell in love with Ghibli and eventually decided to explore Japanese animation beyond that, arriving at Evangelion on the grounds that it was written by Hideaki Anno, who apparently once worked for and is friends with Miyazaki.

I think what the west needs is a properly mature animation studio doing high quality big name adaptations of popular, but genuinely mature, works initially, before moving onto doing their own stuff.

I suppose most of us discover anime by chance as well. My story is that when I was young (7-8 I guess) I adored the Transformers and at some point found out about the Cyberton cartoon which was aired on CN (this also started my habit of getting up extremely early because I could only find it on in the 5-5:30 A.M time slot) I wouldn't realize this until much later, but that was my first experience with anime. Fast-forward to this spring, and I got sent to TVTropes and, by the magic of the random article button, found Haruhi. The rest is, as they say, history.

That's a bit off the line of discussion, but I guess it'll be fine.

Still, I can only hope one day anime could manage to win an Oscar again, and preferably it would be something that would make people go "Hey, animation can be used to tell a mature story, and doesn't have to be kid-friendly at the same time."

Not going to happen this time, Madoka is up against too much competition; The Croods, Despicable Me 2, The Wind Rises, Frozen, Monster's University, and Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2. The Wind Rises may struggle to get nominated as only 5 movies can make it. Despicable Me 2 and Frozen are definite locks.

How I got into anime is coming up on Friday. Crying from Toonami being gone, going "I need to watch my Japanese cartoons.", hear about a show called Bleach on [adult swim], try it, try more on [as], branch out past what's on [as], and here I am 5 nearly years later.

A side from the simple titles. Anime "can" be complicated, most of the audience would say " This movie is about a girl who wishes to be a magical girl..without knowing the consequences" vs " The bad guy has adopted 3 girls and tries to save the world instead of taking over it."
I was reading reports about "Wind Rises" It is mainly about the WWII Zero plane creator and people are still sensitive to WWII era.

I watched the trailer to Wind Rises yesterday. I think it's almost a biography of that guy who designed that plane.

Yes, it's basically a bio of the designer of the plane and how he struggles with the use of said plane in war and stuff.

I want to see that. Looks beautiful.

On the plus side, he said, campaigners for “The Wind Rises” can waive the legacy flag: Don’t miss your last chance to honor Mr. Miyazaki. “I’ve created a stir several times before by saying that I’ll quit, but this time I’m serious,” Mr. Miyazaki said at a Sept. 6 news conference in Tokyo, citing his age and failing eyesight.

Mr. Krause of CalArts noted Studio Ghibli has a history of tackling extremely serious topics. “Grave of the Fireflies” was a grim 1988 film from the company about two starving children in postwar Japan. “I guess the difference is that, when it comes from a major director, it can still be a big surprise,” Mr. Krause said.

OK, so I was explaining about NGE and the Rebuild films to someone who wanted to watch and knew I'd seen it, when a passer by randomly shouted "Shinji and Kaworu are as gay as I am".

That is one of those moments in life that makes you feel good.

I just found out that the girls who I sit with on the bus to and from school every day are huge anime lovers, which is nice; outside of niche nerd circles, there aren't many otaku anywhere near where I live, so finding a whole group of them to talk to every day is pretty pleasing.

Also, Roger, that's the best thing ever. XD

Due to what I call boarding school syndrome, there were literally two people at my school who weren't anime lovers...

I miss those days...

I also regret only really familiarising myself with Studio Ghibli and a couple of other things during that time... Damnit!

I'm, as far as I'm aware at least, the only person even close to the otaku-type in my area (note: I don't consider myself there yet; I still have a long way to go) :/

As what happened to me earlier proves, you're probably not, it's just us nerds are generally reclusive. After all, why else would I have a Vitamin D prescription?

You're lucky, IRL I know a few anime fans, but they don't watch much. Like maybe 10 a year at the most? It leads to the same old Naruto discussions... You would think I would be able to discuss just about anything as I've seen a couple hundred anime (And plenty of them are some of the most popular shows in the North American fandom), but nope, it's a constant struggle. I couldn't even get Attack on Titan discussions, ATTACK ON 🤬 TITAN.

Online is literally the only place I can feel alive when discussing this stuff.

I have a couple of classmates who watch anime, but I dunno how much anime they watched and how frequent they watch it. However I do know one girl who watches a lot. There's a couple more I knew back in junior high who are at a otaku kind of level as well.

Imagine being able to tell someone watches anime just by their appearance. "You watch anime, don'tcha? Your face says it all!"

Seriously... One of my best friends now is only that because of anime...

I'm 32 y/o.
In a bar (I'm a regular there) and on the trivia game I see someone playing trivia is named "gutz."
I look about and see one guy with a trivia console, say "hey man, not to bother you but, are you gutz on there?" he looks at me, says "yeah." I say "Is that Gutz from berserk or something else?" He says "whatchu know about berserk?"... boom, it start and we've been great friends for a while now.

Goes to show you don't ever know, watch each card you play and play it slow. :D

Lol, actually, I knew her since 6th grade and I know she likes anime because when I first met her I saw her reading an anime magazine & we talked a bit from there.

As a matter of fact... maybe you're right lol

I actually play that game quite often. When I'm in the subway, there's tons of youg people coming out of their schools and such, and I often come across a guy or gal and I'm like "I bet he/she watches anime", and I then start looking for stuff that tells the tale, and sure enough, several times I've found a keychain figure in their backpack, or some buttons, a t-shirt, necklaces with anime motifs (coolest one of the bunch was a Gurren Lagan drill), or when they finally step in the train and the doors close, they pop out a manga off their backpacks and such. So it works!

Never talked to any one of them, though. Only with that Sailor Moon girlie I talked you guys about at ARM.

Though will they talk to you about anime?

Maybe you should talk to them about it. Every person I talk to about Anime tends to like some random stuff or feels like they are shy about it as I am.
In IE news, We are getting a new mascot.
