Seriously, ZUN draws his characters looking like they all have fetal alcohol syndrome, I have no idea how people can make such great fanart out of it. It's like the lore and fandom surrounding Touhou is better than the franchise itself.
 
They make great fanart of it because they are all perfect bases for artists to base their work on. Zun's art has nothing to do with it, that just tells them how they look to start.

And yes, the fandom is probably what people remember most. Mind you I appreciate all 4 of the big corners of Touhou, some just pick one part and go with that, yet call themselves true fans of it. Those people are any of deeply worrying, weird, boring or bastards.

The music is good. I simply didn't believe that ZUN isn't at all musically trained; he's unusually talented. But, I suppose that makes his music sound extremely unique, and I love them for that. The Toho Eurobeat series has some great remixes of his best tracks, which I also enjoy.

Try as I might, though, I can't get into the games. I mean, I love shoot-'em-ups. Even hard-as-nails vertical scrollers like Ikaruga and Under Defeat - it's just that Touhou is so formulaic and boring to me. It's like the Call of Duty of Japanese shoot-'em-ups.

Anyway, time for a Song of the Day:

The music is outstanding. However, I'm not given to many of the remixes of the songs. I actually quite enjoy them in their original form, in spite of some of the instruments used - the composition is what matters and it's there alright. Therefore I quite like remixes where just the instruments are changed - I'm partial to Mega ZUN by HertzDevil in particular.

I hadn't played shmups a very great deal at all prior to Touhou (and I didn't even find it via the shmup bit itself), but I think what sells it for most is the look of the patterns. Sure, they don't need 1/10th of the bullets they use to beat you, but do you really care when they look like that?

I stay primarily for the characters. Mostly, they all look good in the looks department, but they combine that with what's established about them, which you can then base a headcanon (and a story) on. Well, except Cirno. That's the bad part of the fandom.
You can form as varied an opinion on them as you want, basically.

Aya's put together well, especially in that bottom half :sly: Though her top half doesn't compliment it well :lol:

Sanae gets more donations than Reimu because she'll do anything (anyone) for faith

Wasn't funny in the least and obviously I thought it was poorly made.
In the future if I was a user made vid for review purposes I'll be watching someone who actually cares to put in effort and sound like they care about the content.
That guy sounded like he didn't care about a single thing in the video. 👎
He might as well used the "meh" behind every single sentence. :indiff:
