I've been playing a lot of Driveclub as of late, since the free AMG pack was released last Tuesday. It also introduced the Mercedes-AMG GT3 to the game, as a rival to a dominating car in Super Class, the Renault R.S. 01. OK, you may be asking, what does this have to do with anime? Well... The AMG GT3 is German, the R.S. 01 is French... And that reminds me of Charlotte & Laura from Infinite Stratos. Don't ask questions, just go/roll/bear with it.

I've just discovered the joys of subbed anime.

In the midst of rewatching Seirei No Moribito. Signed up for a free Hulu account, and noticed they had subs for it, so I decided to try it out.

It's so much better. The voice actor for Chagum sounds so much better. Balsa's voice sounds harder, Tanda sounds less like a girl... :P

A lot of dubbing just outright sucks. Disney usually gets it right with its Ghibli re-releases (thank goodness), and some of the older dubbing houses had fantastic work... I prefer the old Ranma dubs, for example... and the guy who does Great Teacher Onizuka is fantastic (though some of the female voices in that dub are laughable)... I'm starting Samurai Champloo (Yes, I am pathetically behind the times) and pleased that he is there, also.

But a lot of the new stuff is execrable. And they don't take the time to match voices and speech patterns to the characters.

I think the problem is... there aren't enough characters amongst english dubbers. It's lovely listening to original Japanese audio, even if you can't understand it.

Don't get me wrong, the Moribito dub is great, but the subbed version is even better.

I don't have much experience with other animes, but I've heard a lot of people say that, in general, the subs are better.

Something is always going to get lost in translation. That's why it's a good idea to watch the subbed versions, even if you've already watched the dubs.

But I do find watching a properly dubbed anime immensely satisfying.
 
Ahhhh, Initial D. The subbed originally said inertia drift, but in the English dub changed to 'super drift'. :lol:

I would like to... Ahem, "babysit" Rias and Akeno from High School DxD, but hey, to each their own. (Plus, they'd prefer to be "babysat" by one guy whose name starts and ends with an I. And my name starts with an N, and ends with an S.)
