My two-year exploration of Anime has come to an end, and I have to say that, generally speaking, I do not like it very much at all. I've seen two extraordinary series, one good one, and a couple of okay ones, but the vast majority have been mid to absolute garbage. Trying to watch Anime for the first time in 2024 as an adult was a very disappointing experience, as most Anime seems to be aimed at kids, even the supposed Seinen and Josei ones are riddled with weird-ass cringe, goofy comedy, and bizarre nonsense. Glad to have found AoT, Violet Evergarden, and Ergo Proxy, but everything else was mostly just a waste of time. So long Anime, missing you already!

I hate modern cutesy Anime.

The last series I watched and bought was The Feedom Project, mainly because it was a Katsuhiro Otomo collab. This was 20 years ago now.

If you want adult themed Anime then look to the 80s and 90s stuff, mainly the projects that came to the UK by way of Manga Entertainment. For child friendly but have deep routed themes like Loss, love or the environment the you can’t go wrong with Studio Ghibli. The Manga years gave us some truly fantastic art with short OVAs and plenty of adult aimed themes. Personally I never bothered with Hentai, the closest film wise was Urotsukidōji which I guess could be classed as such.

Violet Evergarden has absolutely none of that in it, and I'd highly recommend it. Probably the most grown up Anime I've seen since Grave of The Fireflies.

I'm old enough to have seen Akira when it first came out (and did), so I agree: the older stuff was way more serious and adult. I was mainly criticising Anime series, and not films. I think when Japan does Anime movies, they tone down the cringe for a worldwide audience. I really liked Your Name, Weathering With You, and Suzume: a brilliant trilogy by Makoto Shinkai. A Silent Voice, and, I Want To Eat Your Pancreous were good too. I've seen several Studio Ghibli films over the years, and they were great. Ghost in The Shell (1995) was okay as well. It's just a shame that modern Anime series are all aimed at kids/teenagers, and even the adult stuff is full of weird modern idiosycnrasies.

Have you seen Attack on Titan or Violet Evergarden?
