The Theme LEC #51: Le Mans
Chosen by: @wowbaggerBR

The greatest race in the world is less than a month away, and this feels like the perfect moment to pay tribute to one of its most iconic and beloved eras: the 1980s. As GT7 offers a great lineup of Group C prototypes and road cars that can be transformed into 1980s-style GT racers, so the rules are simple: choose any car that looks at home threading the needle down the Mulsanne Straight - as long as it’s from the 1980s. You are free to create new designs or faithful replicas.

Cars: Group C and or 1980s.

Body parts/Widebody: Any

Liveries: Original and Replica Liveries

Unique restrictions: None

Bonus picture requirements: Scapes or Race photos from Le Mans

User made/showcase decals: Allowed

General Rules
 • You are only allowed to enter one livery, you must have made it yourself, and it must not have been entered in a GTS/GT7 LEC before.
 • Chat about the theme is encouraged, but you must follow the entry submission rules below, and please avoid posting other liveries where ever possible.
 • If judgements are needed regarding the suitability of the entry, these will be at the discretion of the member that selected the theme.
 • Standardised entry photos and entry layouts provide a level playing field and the guidelines must be respected.
 • Do not edit your photos.
 • You may be asked to share your livery if shenanigans are suspected.
 • Discussion about the LEC format in general should be taken to this thread: Future of Livery Editor Competitions
 • Blatant disregard for either the rules, or the spirit of the competition may result in your entry being disregarded.
 • The winner gets to nominate the next the theme from the Theme suggestions list, or can nominate a special theme related to a real world event.

Submission Rules
 • Entries should be made in their own post, your entry should contain the elements listed here, no more, no less
 • 1) The opening line should read FINAL ENTRY, and make it Red to help us find them for the poll. (FINAL ENTRY)
 • 2) Two main pictures (Mandatory Pictures), these may not exceed 640 pixels in either direction, but ideally should link to a larger version. See Image Posting below.
 • 3) In spoiler tags (
...
) you may include two further Bonus Pictures. These also may not exceed 640 pixels in either direction, and can ideally can link to larger versions.
 • 4) The content of Bonus Pictures might have been specified in the theme, if they have, you must respect the requirements stated - otherwise they can be Scapes, race photos or screencaps from within the livery editor.
 • Nothing else is needed. Explaining your entry is encouraged, but please do so in a second post - this isn't regarded as double-posting by the moderators. Including anything else in your submission post only makes things take longer.

Mandatory Picture Settings
 • Mandatory pictures use pre-defined Scapes.
 • One of your two mandatory pictures must be a front quarter view, the other must be a rear quarter view.
 • Your two mandatory pictures must use either of the following locations (it doesn't matter which location you use for which view), "Pit Lane / Oita - Japan" or "Aomori Museum of Art / Aomori - Japan"
 • How to set up the scene:

Focal Length: 60 - 85mm
Aperture: f5.6 - f16

Exposure Correction: +0.0 to +1.0 (screen dependent)

NOTE: if you have previously entered, just go to Scapes > My Library > click your previous entry > Open Scapes > change car to the new entry, refocus and snap a new photo. No need to reposition the camera/car unless its proportions are wildly different.

Image Posting
 • Images must be no bigger than 640 pixels wide or tall, and click through to higher resolution versions.
 • Images should be hosted ideally on GTP, via the Media section. Images hosted by Flickr or similar will also be accepted. Go here for advice on how to do this.
 • Do NOT use the 'Attach Files' function below the reply box when submitting your options.
 • Again, do NOT edit your images. They must be as they were when taken in Scapes/Photomode.

Good luck everyone!

I could have sworn we had this series about a year ago?
Indeed! That was two and a half years ago:

I could have sworn we had this series about a year ago?

There's clearly some interest in having competitions related to real world events, rather having confusing 'bonus' LECs, so it's also an option for competition winners to pick a theme related to such an event if it's coming up when the comp will be live.

yes, it would, replicas are fair game. I would just hide eventual "IMSA" stickers so it would look more like a Le Mans entry.

and obsessively hunt down correct Le Mans category sticker for the year, but that's me :D
well if thats the case i guess i can change up something i have already done from 1988 🥳

This is my first time participating in a GTPlanet livery competition so I hope I got everything right.

Having said that, I went for a hypothetical Le Mans entry by American racing team Holbert Racing which competed in the IMSA series with a Porsche 962 during the 1980's. They never raced outside of North America though and since their Löwenbräu-themed car has always been one of my favorite liveries, I made up a design of what a potential Le Mans car by the team could have looked like. I wanted to make it as realistic as possible with period correct sponsors and logos.

Made some good progress today. I'm going for a mid-eighties Group B car and an "I can't believe it's not a BMW M1".

I'm probably going to have to create my own decal for the number plate.

FINAL ENTRY

After some research I fell for Jens Winther's BMW M1 Group B car from Le Mans 1984. Unfortunately we don't have the M1 in GT7, so I transplanted it to the Ferrari 288 GTO, which is probably the most similar in shape and style.

Did a couple of custom decals for this one: the number plates (3 different versions), the team name and drivers, the Avon Tyres decal on the front spoiler and the rear bumper and the "Danmark" decal with the Danish flag.

FINAL ENTRY

that reminds me of something I was making for a the Merak and De Tomaso a while back, might finally finish them, although neither would be my entry for this LEC.

looks really great, specially those curves following the wheel arches. I don't know how you did it, but it looks great and I know I would have a hard time replicating that.

FINAL ENTRY

I updated my entry. The red was a little too bright, so I toned it down a bit. Also created a custom Avon Tyres decal for the sides and adjusted the placement of the sponsor decals. The size of the Castrol logo on the bonnet was increased by around 50% to better match with the original car. Added the livery colours to the A-pillars. Adjusted the paint of the wheels as well.

Back in the 80s, Ferrari was developing a Group B car, but for circuit racing, just like Porsche would do with his 959 to make the 961.
Sadly this car never competed in any official events, even though a few real examples do exist, including a few variations converted for Rallying.
So I decided to come up with a what-if Ferrari brought their 288 Gr.B at Le Mans to battle with the very popular BMW M1, with F1 drivers Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto at the wheel and the help from the very experienced French team Charles Pozzi.
