I was going to join the hike, but I tried to drive my Journey up the mountain and meet up with you guys.

The little Journey that tried, and failed. Too steep for an RV with FWD and top speed of 60MPH.

EDIT: Also, an idea is to put upcoming events in the OP.

Or you could do Invite Only session, that way you don't have to be in a specific crew to join.

Are you in story mode? Restart the game and launch story mode first.
 
Select "Play GTA Online" and the option should be there.
