Picked this up yesterday and somehow managed to walk out of Game with a PS4 Pro as well! Will hopefully get my vanilla PS4 sold on eBay before Christmas. I'm liking it so far, a real nice atmosphere and simple but compelling gameplay. Camera freaks out every now and again. I'm also getting some pretty severe slow down when trying to run it at 4K. Drop it down to 1080p and it's very smooth. Very disappointed by that.

From what I can see, it does seem like a poorly optimized PS3 game running on a PS4. I am still going to pick it up but it's so expensive everywhere! Most new releases can be found for about £35 but not this one...

Yeah it's got that feel about it. Cheapest I have seen is Tesco for £39. My local one was sold out so had to go with Game.

Digital Foundry said that it runs best at 1080p on a PS4 Pro, here's their analysis:

Any word about a patch?

For what? I doubt we'd get any because they've been working on it for 8 years already, & they've had enough time to do what they needed to do. However, I would like to see a patch with the option to remove the DS4 prompts, as they significantly spoil the immersion for me.

TOP TIP: If you don't wanna buy the game just yet, & you don't own ICO or SOtC, get a 7 day trial of PS Now & play them both for free. I did just that & have to say that ICO is looking very dated, but the nice atmosphere is just how I remembered it. The HD remake is too dark in places compered to the original, & the soft focus effect is missing which makes it look worse imo. Still a fun game to play though, but definitely a retro experience.

For what?
Anything to improve the framerate problems, especially when it can get this bad. I haven't played the game yet because it's on my Xmas list. I don't mind some framerate drops for a game like this, but I hope it doesn't become that crippled on my PS4 Slim.

I would also appreciate the option to remove those button prompts.

This is how GT Sport will turn out. Trailer in early 2016, releases in 2027.:sly:

Anyhow, I'm thinking of buying this on Boxing Day. Is it any good?

The Last Guardian has just been added to the PS Store January sale, & is only £29.99.

:D

I've beaten TLG twice, and still need to play again to unlock the last collectible and find the remaining barrels I haven't found yet. As a cinematic sort of game I didn't expect it to have much replay value, but it's very engaging and Trico makes it worth revisiting.

On the technical side it's pretty much what I expected (for better and worse), and it delivers on its premise. It's a beautiful and awe-inspiring experience, one I am very glad not to have missed!

For anyone who was on the fence about this game, its price has been cut to $40/€35/£30, including on the PS Store. 👍

@Brend
It's received huge discounts in retail too...some places online selling it for £22.85! My biting point is under £20 so doesn't look like I'll have to wait long at all.

So I finally got around to getting and playing this game. First, I should say that I have no played Ico or Shadow of the Colossus. I wish I had, but I didn't really play those kind of games back then, and I really doubt I'd be able to get past their age if I were to play them today. I wanted to play Last Guardian because it looked unique and I figured it'd be one of those landmarks in gaming that you just kind of need to have played. And overall, I still stick by that statement.

Let me start by praising the graphics, atmosphere and world design. It's absolute awe inspiring, although it also makes the lack of a photo mode all the more noticeable. It does come at the expense of the framerate, which is often just plain bad. Definitely feels like 20 FPS at times, which really hampers the experience. And as others have mentioned, the persistent button prompts is a really odd design choice.

Trico is hands down, without a doubt, the most memorable and believable animal sidekick of any game ever. He looks and sounds amazing, and is a remarkable achievement that the developers should be proud of. Trico has more personality than 95% of videogame characters. While it can be frustrating at times, I think it was a wise decision to make Trico not respond to your commands all the time, as it really makes it easier to think of him as a sentient animal, rather than an AI.

The player character, however, is lacking any real development, which I think is a shame.

The gameplay itself is where most of my problems lie. I was well aware that the game featured platforming puzzles, but literally the entire game is spent dealing with these, and when you add the fact that a lot of these puzzles aren't very intuitive, it becomes very frustrating very fast. I understand that the designers of the world wanted to make it seem real, and as such, there is no real use of certain colors or other obvious signs of where the game wants you to go. I like this, as it does add to the authenticity of the world. Trico will even help guide you by sometimes looking in the direction that you ought to go. Despite all this, I still found myself stuck for a significant amount of time throughout the game, even during dramatic set pieces, where the pacing makes or brakes the drama. Many of the puzzles just didn't make any sense to me, especially in the very last portion of the game. To make things worse, there are times where you are actually doing the right thing, but because Trico takes such a long time doing his part, you think you're doing something wrong, and thus you start doing something else.

Then there is the story, of which there isn't much. The game is really more of a journey than it is a story, but I'll say what I can within the spoiler tag.

So kids are abducted by Tricos (I think that is the name of the species, rather than our pet itself), who then offer them up to whoever made the closed off valley city, and in return, they are given delicious barrels filled with whatever it is Tricos like to eat. We're never told what the purpose of the abductions are, as we're only shown them being fed into a bird statue at the top of the satellite dish tower thingy. I especially wonder what happened to the kids we saw being offered at the very end. I'd also love just a few hints on who or what even build the city you explore. We never come across anything suggesting that people lived there, are we see no dead remains, nor any living quaters.

And who exactly is the last guardian? Is it the kid? Why? Because he found the medallion? And did the others who were abducted find this too? Why was our Trico chained when we start the game? I get that the journey and relationship between the two is the primary focus of the game, but surely we could get some hints on what is going on. Just annoys me to have such an amazing world, but literally no explanation for anything in it.

In the end, I am glad I got to play the game. It's not as good as I might've hoped, but it's definitely worth playing.

The Last Guardian is on sale in the UK PS Store for just £19.99!

@Jawehawk - Good review. I tried playing ICO again recently, & it's really showing it's age; I didn't want to play it anymore after a few minuites. Loved it back in the day though.
