Found the gear ratios from wiki:

"Both the standard edition and the 'McLaren F1 LM' have the following gear ratios: 3.23:1, 2.19:1, 1.71:1, 1.39:1, 1.16:1, 0.93:1, with a final drive of 2.37:1, the final gear is offset from the side of the clutch.[7] The gearbox is proprietary and was developed by Weismann.[19] The Torsen LSD (Limited Slip Differential) has a 40% lock"

Those gear ratios just won't work on GT5. First, because the 1st gear can't be tuned below 4.725. Second, because if you could, the gears would still be too tall. If you check a speed/rpm calculator (like this one: http://www.car-videos.net/tools/speedrpm.asp) and compare with the speed by gears found here you'll see that the effective final drive of the McLaren F1 is not 2.37 but about 2.89. Thinking now, I guess that's why PD got the gear ratios wrong, they didn't check speed/RPM, they just made a copy/paste work with the numbers they had.

I messed around with the "Fully" Customizable Transmission, and managed to get ratios very close to the real ones.

Gear_____Ratio_____Speed at 7500RPM

1st______4.725_____65
2nd______3.197_____97
3rd______2.471_____125
4th______2.040_____150
5th______1.690_____180
6th______1.343_____Max Speed I got: 222 mph (not at 7500 RPM)
FG_______2.000

Enjoy a much closer to real McLaren F1

Nice work, will try those settings. When I first got the F1 some time ago (in GT5 terms anyway) I managed to get about 222mph out of it on SSR7 after an oil change, which I was happy enough with, but yeah 6th did seem a little pointless, would not pick up at all.

Also early on I ran a few hot laps with the F1 and the Veyron on my favourite track Trial Mountain, leaving traction control at 5 and found the F1 was around 1 second quicker, which was what I expected (the Veyron still blew mostly everything else away though)

But for some time now i've been running my cars with TCS almost always off, I usually just leave ABS at 1 and oddly found the Veyron was then a good deal quicker around Trial Mountain. In fact I found the F1 way more of a handful and about 1.5 seconds off the Veyron's time. I was also quicker than the F1 in the VW Nardo, though admittedly that's a concept car only. Still surprised me though, really thought Trial Mountain would suit the F1 better and the Veyron would benefit from a more open track where it can stetch its legs (and considerable bulk)

Anyone else found this? I need to do some more testing, but despite the bizarre wheelying down the long straight in the Veyron, it still seems to be the fastest stock production car to me around a track, so far anyway, and I really thought the F1 would own it.

The McLaren F1 is a driver's car, the Veyron isn't. The McLaren is for those who enjoy the challenge of taming a beast with so much power and so little weight.

The results of your tests are understandable. When you were using the TC, it let you could control the McLaren easier and made the Bugatti slower since it already have 4WD and doesn't need the TC much to be controllable. Without the TC in the way, the Bugatti was able to let all its power out in its 4 wheels while the McLaren struggles to put it on only two.

People like to compare the two mostly because of the speed record, but they are clearly very different machines designed with entirely different concepts in mind. I really admire the engineers of the Bugatti. They must have faced overwhelming problems to meet the stupid demands of 250 mph and 1000 hp. The most impressive part is that they managed to make the car do well on corners.

Personally, I like much more the concepts of Gordon Murray. Making the car as light as possible, naturally aspirated and more than enough power. For me the McLaren F1 will always be the perfect machine. The Veyron is just some car that happens to be faster than it.

Love the McLaren F1.

Best car ever made.
I have 4 of them so far in GT5.
Love it, the best car ever made, THE best.
Nothing will ever come close to it.
It's a legend - legends die unbeaten.

Also...
Don't EVER compare the F1 with Veyron.
Veyron was built with only 1 thing in mind - TOP SPEED.
The F1 was built to be the ultimate driver's car (most practical, inovative, driver-friendly supercar) which turned out to be the fastest car ever for many years (which wasn't it's goal).
The F1 still holds the speed record for naturally aspired cars if I'm correct.

I don't make a difference between Gordon Murray and Jesus, they're both the same in my eyes.

For a drive across country I'll have the Veyron, for a track day I'll have the F1.

They Are nothing alike except that they are both fast

Not that I have an F1 at the moment to experiment on, but you know you can "gimmick" the gear ratios by playing with extremes on the "speed" slider versus the final drive slider? Set the "final drive" slider at one end of the scale, then fiddle with the "speed" slider, and you can get extremely long or extremely short ratios all throughout.

I've used it to give my Corvette ZR1 LM a gearbox so long that I'm driving the Indy oval in 2nd and 3rd.

This is my all time favorite car as well, but I just can't seem to get it right with the DFGT. I've only had the wheel for a couple of months but the car just over steers in the middle of the corner.. I guess I need to ease up on the throttle or something during the turn.

Any driving tips regarding the DFGT and this car's tuning etc, will be very helpful! =)

I had the wheel a couple of months too, should be long enough to get used to by now. I think it's the McLaren F1 itself that is tricky, especially in stock form. If you throw racing softs on it right off the bat, it will over steer like crazy. The over steer isn't noticable with regular Street tires. But if you want to trick out the McLaren then What you should do is-

TUNING:
Increase front toe +8 And/Or rear toe +8
Stiffen rear springs +10
Increase LSD in Acceleration sensitivity +10
Braking sensitivity +5
And finally, add a rear wing and increase down force (Optional)

DRIVING:
The car is light and so don't be afraid to brake a little late. Then let the car roll around the turn and don't throttle out until passing the apex. If you brake too early, you will have to throttle around the whole turn, and the car will spin.

I'm conflicted on the McLaren F1, on another string, it's named as one of the worst handling cars, but a lot people on this string love it. The LM version just came up on my UCD for about 3.5 million, is it worth picking it up, I already have the Speed 8 and the Minolta, is it any better in handling or speed?

I love it so much I own two of them. Stock and LM.

Be sure to fit the Semi-Racing Exhaust though. I don't know why PD did this, but it seems like that they made this exhaust upgrade the "real sound" and made the stock one sound... like something else entirely. It really does sound like an awesome V12 after fitting it though. 👍 :D

Really? I have been nervous to do any exhaust upgrades because I thought I was hearing the real sound!

Firstly the UCD car is a Mclaren F1 GTR Longtail, not an LM (which was the road car made to celebrate the win at Le Mans). For your second question, the Speed 8 and Minolta are in a different class of car, the Mclaren was a GT1 class car where as the Speed 8 was an LMP car and the Minolta a Group C car (the equivlant of LMP1 these days). So obviously the Mclaren GTR is going to be slower than both those cars.

But still very much worth buying. However my love lies with the Mclaren F1 '94 road car.

For anyone who finds the F1 too much to handle on sports tires, I recommend you buy some racing softs and the car will become a whole new machine. I recently bought racing softs for my F1 since it's just too slippery around the Nurb on sports softs and wow, it's just amazing. Certainly gives enough grip to get the most out of the car and its just an exhilarating feeling driving a car of that speed at its full potential. I recommend cockpit view to make the experience even better. Seriously, everyone go and try it.

I really didn't know that. Thank you very much. I'll try it out when I'm able to.

This was my first proper experience with the McLaren F1. Oh boy, I probably drove for 3 hours straight, and only in time trial. The handling is so precise and smooth. I absolutely love it, especially in the cockpit view. And it just looks so awesome!

@psavi: Will try out your gear ratios, I haven't had a chance to play GT5 in the last few days, hopefully I can play again this weekend.

It's great you have a lot of passion for the car, but it's also understandable why people compare them...I know they are very different cars underneath but the net result is also that they are two of the fastest ever road cars, and two of the fastest around any track. Therefore comparisons are inevitable. I actually prefer the F1, but just expected it to be better around Trial Mountain in a stock configuration. I think in the real world an F1 would blow the Veyron's Top Gear lap away if they got their hands on one.

Also a few of the claims you make are kinda off such as:

"Veyron was built with only 1 thing in mind - TOP SPEED.
The F1 was built to be the ultimate driver's car (most practical, inovative, driver-friendly supercar)"

They are both surprisingly practical cars in many ways but the Veyron is the more driver-friendly and well equipped by a long margin.

This seems like a setup for understeer. I guess it will make the car easier to drive for those who for some reason can't handle it (why use crap tires?)

This is awesome:
McLaren F1 in Historic Orange with parts in GT Auto added to look like the McLaren F1 LM Version. No performance parts added.
Then go to the Nurburgring Nordschleife, select cockpit view and turn HUD off. Drive.

So awesome. Hard, but awesome.

at first when i looked at the car list I was like no wai!!! a Mclaren Formula 1, then I found out it was a street version and not the Senna machine I originally thought it could have been. Then I realized Senna raced for Williams that season and I felt a little better

I enjoy driving it with Sports tires, even though I feel I can't get it drive to it's full potential. I actually found myself spinning out more with the Racing softs on.

ANyhow, those settings are for the conservative drivers yes. I personally don't have the car set up that way in the suspension at least. I did loosen up the LSD tho. The McLaren is my 2nd favorite car in the game, next to the Ford GT.
