So you could do 300 km/h and still manage to brake/stop in time if the light changed  That's crazy
It's amazing to think I could do 200 mph on my local high-street... And also slightly terrifying.

Ring times... Woo.

Remember when the Enzo, Carrera GT, Murcielago, and Ford GT were battling it out and people had to make decent arguments as to which would be the best instead of quoting some irrelevant laptimes?

I'd say all of those except the Murcielago are winners. The Ford and Porsche are still worth an impressive % of their original MSRP.

Have to say, that video gets on my wick.

If you're not going to post the time, shut up FFS.

McLaren's PR is so nauseous.

Yes. How stupid of them to celebrate the sensation of speed, the glory of driving, and the beauty of engineering. What's really important about a super car is its freaking lap time.

I'm quite glad that the video enrages people who wish to dumb everything down to a numbers game.

Well, if you're bragging about lap times in the video itself, while being coy about the actual number... it's going to cheese off a lot of people.

Nice video, but it's like softcore porn. Promises a lot, teases a lot, but doesn't show you very much.

I like the P1... of the 3 cars of its type, it's the most attractive and likely the fastest.

However, it's laughable to brag about a lap time and then say you're not going to tell anyone what it is

Usual McLaren PR BS.

They done this as a typically British middle finger to Porsche, but don't want to reveal the time to the public.
But can we not just ENJOY the video without knowing the time? The car should be more than a simple lap... As should every single one. Be it a Prius or the P1

Of course we can.

But the fact that McLaren were insecure enough to attempt the lap... needy enough to brag about it via a (very well-produced) video... and embarrassed enough about the actual time to not reveal it... well... errh...

For all we know, it could have been a very bonkers lap and they're trying to drum up controversy/interest to get people talking. Or it could have been just under seven minutes. Which would be embarrassing for them, since they expected to blow Porsche and everyone else out of the water... completely.

McLaren is not bragging with lap times because the conditions were not perfect and more importantly, Ferrari is yet to do quick runs on the Ring. Announcing a lap time, which is maybe not indicative of the cars real performance, could hurt them if Ferrari runs a faster time with the LaFerrari.

Also, its not like Porsche announced their times immediatly. Didn't they test over 7 months on the ring before they bragged with the sub 7 minute lap time done on so called "road tires"?

edit: I could not stand the first photos of this car in orange... but that black one looks incredible.

McLaren have had multiple sessions with the P1 at the 'Ring, so plenty of opportunity to set a representative time.

If they are waiting for Ferrari to post a time, it smells of lack of confidence (even though I think the P1 will be faster).

Porsche's lap was done on road legal tyres, so no issue with it... at least they posted the time, didn't just allude to one.

Post the time or shut up about how fast your car is around the 'Ring.

Mclaren had multiple sessions of setting the car up, not all of them were to break the record.

Just sayin'

Did Porsche announce their time after day 1 on the Ring? No, they ran couple of tests and improved the car, upping its specs etc.

I think its not lack of confidence, but mistrust towards Ferrari who are known for doing shady stuff to make sure they always come on top. All P1s and LaFerraris are sold, they don't need marketing and PR to sell more of them. McLaren does those runs to raise their brand value by beating Ferrari and Porsche.

I'm not a fan of Nürburgring Record runs because you never know under which circumstances those runs were carried on (Tyre compound, driver and team, temperature, rain). You have a 918 doing 6:57 and a Nismo GT-R 7:07, but you don't know how much faster the Nismo could have been on the Porsches tyres. Same with other cars, remember the ZR1 vs GT-R v Spec Nordschleife wars?

I would prefer them doing the N24h with works teams to show which brand is best ;)

Most roads here are highways. I broke the 200km/h on two occasions but I stopped speeding since the camera caught me twice. What I'd do to get my hands on a proper 300km/h+ car -.-

As did McLaren, yet they still choose not to post the time.

The NISMO time is irrelevant as the car was running non-standard suspension and aero - parts that aren't available for the customer car.

McLaren should post the time or stop talking about it surreptitiously.

I don't have an encyclopedic recollection of this thread but isn't this the reaction that McLaren's marketing/PR team was after? They have barely talked about the Nurburgring since uploading the video yet you have fans of Porsche, McLaren, Ferrari, Nissan and the wider automotive community the world over doing all the talking for them. If anything this is a very clever way of creating more brand awareness for McLaren and I applaud how they've gone about the exercise.

Looking forward to the Top Gear review of the car and the LaFerrari's Nurburgring lap-time attempt if that's still on the cards.

You see, thats what I meant, manufacturers do those runs and brag with their lap times, but never tell us the whole story.

The NISMO time was run in the same way Ferrari took criticism for some years back (see Chris Harris' Jalopnik article) - the car being optimised for one specific test.

The NISMO GTR used for the 'Ring time has different aero, different suspension and, I quote from EVO, who recently drove the car, 'a set up specifically for the Nurburgring'.

That's hardly relevant, as even if the parts are available, no one is going to have their £125k+ car set up specifically for just one track.

I don't think a few car nuts chatting about this on a few forums is creating a whole heap of publicity - and the reaction I've seen on the few forums it's been covered on has been for the most part critical

-------------------------

I go through stages with McLaren...

Loved them when Senna was there (primarily because of Senna)
Laughed at the corporate BS that Ron spouted for so many years
Was blown away by the F1 (though this was more Gordon Murrays baby, and McLaren were the money men)
Respected them for the dignified way they handled 'Stepneygate' affair
Admired them for taking a risk on Lewis in his rookie season
Laughed at the corporate BS Ron spouted about the MP4 before it was launched

Unfortunately this once again smacks of corporate publicity BS.

And even more unfortunately, Ferrari's PR machine are even worse

I don't think we'll see a LaFezza 'Ring time.

1.3 million views plus all the spillover social media/automotive news-site attention can't be that much [free] publicity right? :P

Now I'm unashamedly a McLaren fan ever since I found out about the F1 road car so I must challenge a couple of things on the rest of your post :sly:

IMO There is nothing wrong with "corporate BS". If that's what it takes to keep a company afloat then that's what any company should be doing anyway (which is appropriate for McLaren being in the ridiculuously competitive supercar business). It was the same story back in the '70s when Ron was in charge of the race team. They needed more money to be competitive so naturally he turned up the robotic professionalism with his "Ron-speak" and similarly did the same for the team. Sure it was very strange and funny to an extent but what we're left with is the second most successful Formula 1 team in history.

Next to that of course is Ferrari and what we have with them is a prancing horse that sells red caps, t-shirts, jackets, coffee mugs...etc. All under the umbrella of a car company specializing in little front-wheel-drive daily drivers. Again nothing wrong with that since we get to see cars like the Enzo, the 458 and the La Ferrari come to life alongside their Formula 1 exploits with their other boring corporate counterparts ;)

All this "McLaren should stop talking about the laptime" BS is ridiculous.

Lets say you go on a date with Scarlett Johansen and tell your friends how it went. Sadly, no one believes you and there isn't any hard evidence. You'll still talk about it, right...?

Except McLaren aren't the ones talking about the Nurburgring laptime. We are!

If you're on a date with Scarlett Johansen, mind, you probably don't have her hooked up to tens of thousands of dollars worth of data-logging equipment... and you don't have a professional film crew recording the whole thing for posterity.

Like I said... softcore porn. All the tease, all the production value... none of the stuff people downloaded bought it to watch.

Or more accurately... not softcore porn... more like the PG13 version of it.

I was simultaneously tittilated and miffed by the striptease video. Now, with no follow-up from McLaren, I've lost interest. Completely.

So I'm guessing the Top Gear review will be the M-rated version and an actual lap-time announcement would be the R-rated version everyone was waiting for? :P

The actual lap with the time will be the triple-X version complete with animal noises. ;)

Like watching one of those scrambled porn channels before digital cable in the hopes of catching a brief glimpse of a boob as a kid. Getting all excited only to realize it was just an elbow.
