spotted the new Mclaren Mercedes SLR today just trundling around in Coventry (England) still in full camo even at low speed the exhaust note its produces is amazing.
I wonder if it'll sound anything like those F1 pace cars - anyone noticed the noise those things make as they go past the microphone points at a GP? They sound like old Group C cars.
I think it will not be far from the wonderful sound you hear from the pacemercs.. Correct me if I'm wrong but the slr uses the same engine (modified fcorse), the supercharged 5.5.

Hope so! Although there's a likelihood that it will be a higher-pitched sound given that it's a V12, not a V8.
We were sitting at Brooklands (corner prior to the final corner) at the British GP, and when the Safety Car went into the pits at the end of its first period, we could still hear it over the screaming of the F1 cars! Mad. But Excellent!

Yeah, I know what you mean. I absolutely love the sound of the safety car! Awesome! While we're on the subject, watch this video of a SL55 AMG modified with a custom Eisenmann exhaust. Very similar to what you hear on the track!
