Holy cow I've just seen the pricing on those things up North...

The base "GX" MX5 will start at 31,900$ (39k for the "GT" top of the line model), or roughly 1000$ less than a Mustang Ecoboost with Premium trim, and 4000$ more than the Toyobaru twins, and quite some more than most of the fwd sporty cars...

Way to go, Mazda. :boggled:

That does seem pretty steep. In the UK, the 1.5-litre car is about £4000 less than a BRZ/86, and the 2.0 is similarly-priced. The 86/BRZ has more power, but realistically the Mazda's engine is nicer than the flat-four, and the roof comes off, which has its own appeal.

At £18k or so the 1.5 is a no-brainer in the UK, if you want RWD. At around £23k it's more difficult to choose between the Mazda and the Toyota/Subaru... I'd certainly have to think about it if I had that kind of money. I prefer the way the Mazda drives, and the driving environment itself, but there's still something very appealing about the 86's coupe body.

Oof.

On the other hand, looking at the site, I think I'd be pretty happy with the base model anyway. I'm still curious why Mazda won't send the 1.5L here though, and I wonder how much that could've knocked off the base price.

I doubt people outside the gearhead circles would be cross shoping a small hatchback and a roadster.

You can say it all you want, but that doesn't make it true :D

That's not what I need to hear right now. Starting to semi-seriously consider trading the new 3 I bought in December for one of these once they are available now that I'm in San Antonio and commute length and winter weather are no longer a concern.

According to Car And Driver, there will be an Abarth version of Fiats Miata-based 124 roadster. So, despite of Mazda not offering "zoom zoom" version of Miata, you still can get it, with spicy italian flavor on top!

And it "may" get the powerplant from 4C.. That's what, 240bhp in a chassis that is apparently a riot to drive with less than 160bhp?

Hm.. 200bhp would still be plenty. Especially because it would bring more torque..

Interested to see if they'll "add lightness". It will probably raise the price significantly with that snail on the motor but, light weight seats, panels, and/or removal of some components, I wonder.
