Ah, old Hockenheim. I always remember the pit fire, for some reason. But that old straight... Sooo epic. Just legendary. Here is a map for the young'uns:

I was always surprised that Tilke only cut it down by just over three kilometres; the new version looks so short compared to the old.

Ahhh sorry Rue, but I don't remember seeing it on the first instance I read the post and you have edited after it was posted??? And as I go to first new post each time I wouldnt've seen the edit if that was part of it...

Senamic posted the ole beast. Good on ya. 6.8km & about 80% full throttle I believe... Roo, unfortunately I believe the track has been ripped up, and seedlings planted... so it'd all have to be resurfaced...

The short, steep down hill section after Lukey Heights would probably be to much of a gradient change for F1. But it would be an awesome track to see the cars race on, if it could be made safe, a lot of high speed flowing corners.
 
As far as I know, the 'old' circuit at Hockenheim has been almost completely lost. If I remember a post on another forum correctly, it is very difficult for someone on the ground to tell where the old track was when they are walking through the forest - the only indecations being difference in the health of the plant life, the trees, (I would assume at least some asphalt has been left but I don't know) and the memorials for Jim Clark, Bert Hawthorne, Markus Hottinger, Patrick Depailler, and whoever else was unfortunate enough to meet their end in that forest. I might be wrong, again, but that Google Earth photo is nearly 7 years old (note the 'short' version of the track differs from what we have today).

Same. There are many tracks in all sorts of countries that simply seem bland. Others are unsafe or unusable for modern F1. Others too short. I still lack a proper, modern-track French GP. France has/had some awesome tracks, but they're all either too short, too dead, or too dangerous.

I didn't make it clear, but I was referring to the old Hockenheim as well. New one is by large and large the best modern circuit in Germany, but the old layout was far better.

Considering it's currently inexistent, trees would have to be removed anyway for the repaving - so we might as well remove a few more to make it safe.

Some of them aren't too bad. This, for example, appears to be what happens when a March 821 (which was indeed the donor for this car) and a Porsche 956 had sex: The 1985 version of the Caparo T1.

It's been a long time, they need to host the Japanese GP at Autopolis. Great track layout, great facilities.
 
They need to, Toyota can't host it at Fuji anymore, and Honda might be saying the same soon as well. And it's a really good track. It was made to host F1 races.

Japanese GP? No, they never hosted it at Autopolis...But they DID have a World Sportscar Championship race there back in '91 AND hosted two "Pacific Grand Prix" there (Back when the circut was renovated into a "Country Club for Cars" and renamed "TI Aida Circut").
 
That's not Autopolis. TI Aida is now called Okayama International Circuit

There's a reason why the Pacific Grand Prix didn't last very long: TI Aida is a pretty poor circuit. It's slow, narrow, very difficult to pass on, has a lacklustre surface, lack facilities and is an isolated part of Japan.

Okay then Einstein if that is the case, pray tell me when they still insist on going to the Hungboroing? What was the point of that new Valencia circuit? Don't get me wrong, great circuit etc. but how many passes were made there last year? NONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And Magny-Cours was in an isolated part of France but they still kept going there and giving entertaining races dain't they?
 
Do you race?'s response to your post was perfectly well reasoned. He's not having a go at you. He has simply given you the reasons why the track lost its Grand Prix.

As for the rest of your questions, money is why a track is used in F1.

It costs $150 million to host a Grand Prix over a 5 year contract. With Bernie taking half of the gate money as well, so you would have to charge an average of $600 each with 100,000 people attending just to break even and that's not counting all the additional infrastructure costs involved.

Hungary hosts the Grand Prix because it's spitting distance from Budapest. Valencia has their race because the circuit is - oddly enough - within the city limits (and I think it deserves the benefit of the doubt because everyone sorted themselves out in order of speed by the first corner; sometimes you just have a bad race). As for Magny-Cours, isolated it may have been, but it was not difficult to access the way TI Aida is.
