Well erm..I didn't have time to plan the shot :lol: The quad bike came out from behind me so I quickly took a photo..

So next time plan it, the photo will turn out a lot better.

I've learned a lot with taking automotive photography that one major thing to avoid is just standing and taking the picture. It is obvious that the photo is something that a normally-sized human just captured with a photographic apparatus. Good photography is capturing a scene, and how the motion and lighting impact that scene. There is no human connection.

Look at any still car photography. None of it is taken at head height. Look at skylineGTR_guy's shots, maybe 2 or 3 of them are taken at eye level, but only to get the nose-first look.

Your quad shot is framed like you were standing there and pointed and shot, which is exactly what you did. The cone is a useless distraction. In motion shots, you should almost always frame the subject to the side where it came from. It's a simple notion that you are trying to show where something is going, not where it came from. There are exceptions, but that is a simple rule you should follow.

Just a few more from me, I've been busy at work and seeing my girlfriend who hates having her photo taken. Bah! But still, she was driving whilst I took these few so I can't complain.

Well my 40D came in today and I sold it haha

weird I know. Well to explain the situation, a 30D body retails for 1300 at b&h, I got mine for 1140 through my work, sold it today for 1200, and bought the 40D with 17-85 IS once agian through my work for 1260 which retails for 1800 at b&h lol. Yay for employee discounts.
 
I'm looking for a Minolta-mount fisheye. I don't think anyone here shoots Minolta, but you may have some photog buddies that do. Ask around. I don't want anything earth-shatteringly expensive, used and bruised is okay, as long as it is still pretty clear.

Thanks for that, great read. I love the line "We went to bars and flirted with girls and generally caused trouble," followed by a picture of them having far too much fun on a swingset.

That's precisely why I'm looking for a fisheye, two posts up.

I also really love this shot. It's so plain, probably some boring state with a boring stretch of highway, but it defines so much of the highways I spend my summers driving, from friend to friend, get together to get together.

Yeah, I was searching for TVR's blender thread, and in one of his thread, I stumbled upon that post you made which made me LOL'ing, seriously, that post was absolutely hilrious :lol:👍


On that, does anyone know something about the Canon Powershot G9? I've got one, recieved it some weeks ago but I haven't had a chance to take it out for a play. It's got 12,1 MP so I expect some nice quality from it but I really don't know how to start photoshooting. The nature's so beautiful at the moment, but I thought I might ask for some advice from Canon G9 users first...

The fish-eye effect is absolutely astonishing! 👍 (pointing to the lower image)
 
I have a G7, pretty much the same thing except it's 10mp, and has a smaller screen. It's a great camera, especially when using manual controls. Quite a few of my shots are with that camera as I can carry it more often than a DSLR.
 
First one is very nice! 👍 I'd suggest dialling in -1/3 of a stop exposure compensation for more detail in the shadows, maybe even more since you're shooting in the snow. That's what I do with my G7 as it tends to blow out highlights...
 
Great shots Bram, you can do it in GT4, now he takes on "life" and succeeds.

However, I want snow here in the UK!! If not, then I'm moving to Norway.
 
These two shots were taken around midnight. Half of my town lost power last night around 1130, so it was pitch black outside. 10-20 second exposure @ f3.5 iso800.

CDailey that first one is pretty sweet. I doubt I'd ever be able to get such a shot here in LA, power outage or otherwise...
 
Thanks :) And I was surprised to see how dark it was. One of my neighbors got in their car and drove around town to see that half of it was without power :S

It was kinda scary standing in the middle of an almost pitch black parking lot at midnight with a $1500 camera on a tripod and a $400 phone in my pocket, lol

Yeah I know the feeling, sometimes driving around down town LA i see the most amazing place, and I think to myself wow that would be an amazing place to shoot a model or a car there, but then my worries always get the best of me and I start thinking do I really want to put all this gear and that car/model in this sketchy area?

Yeah I noticed that too, I tried to keep skies and snow seperated because for full detail in the snow, the sky turned all white while when shooting the sky, I had to take down the exposure a lot, but then the snow turned dark blue...

I think it's wonderful thing though, the G9, with lots of practice, I actually might produce something nice :cheers:
 
I know I've posted at least two of the shots below, but I wanted to re-post them as they have been exposed the Velvia action scripts for photoshop as a true Velvia software filter is expensive.
