Graphically it looks to have gone nowhere since Ride 2. I was playing Drive Club Bikes the other day and the graphics for that still blow Ride away. Then again since when have Milestone ever stepped above 'functional'.

They're using photogrammetry now, so: sort of. It's very similar to what PD used for a long time (and still do), before they supplemented it with any laser scanning.

In reality, laser scanning is a kind of more precise, forward / explicit photogrammetry method (GPS, accelerometers, stabilisation etc.), whereas photogrammetry proper is a little more agnostic, in that it "only" has to correlate between (many) similar photographs to build the 3D point cloud. It doesn't need any absolute position data, because it works it all out using some heavy post-processing of the images supplied (maths, yo). In fact, photogrammetry methods can accurately locate and orient the camera in the 3D space for each photograph used as the input, it just needs to know a few optical properties of the camera(s).

There are videos of Ride 3's version of Brands Hatch in the wild now which look pretty good to me. It's a very robust technique if you can create the game assets from the raw data efficiently, which surely is well established by now, and is in some ways more efficient than using point clouds from laser scans (you get colour data, i.e. textures, for free). Maybe the only thing that is lacking is the finer detail in the track surface itself (hence laser scanning), partly because the method relies on pixels / regions being distinct, and track surfaces are generally very plain.

 
Just preordered the deluxe edition on PS4. With the livery editor, I can see myself spending a lot of time on it recreating retro liveries for the modern bikes.
