The wait is finally over. Subaru has released official photos and initial info on the new JDM-spec Impreza WRX STI. Details remain scant, however, as Subaru only tells us that the new STI is powered by a 16v 2.0L boxer with a twin-scroll turbo mated to a 6-speed manual. SI-DRIVE, multi-mode Drivers Control Center Differential (DCCD) and Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) are also standard. All of these things have been widely speculated on and/or reported already. Specific power numbers are conspicuously absent, so we'll have to wait for the rest of it when the car bows in Tokyo in a couple of weeks. Based on what's already been leaked, look for 304 horses and 311 lb-ft of torque in the Japanese-market model. What's no longer a mystery is the car's appearance, which is muscular and aggressive -- a huge improvement over the base WRX.

Hrm, well, yeah... I'm definitely still an Evolution guy this time around...

Oh... oh I like it. Alot. Just needs to lose that chrome grill insert, and BAM!

You are just a namby pansy that doesn't like Wagony hatchbacks :p Thats all it is.

I like hatchbacks, they make a lot of sense... This just doesn't do it for me. For this kind of money, I'm just a few bucks short of an R32, and I'll take the performance "deficit" if not just for the looks and the "balanced" performance.

...But yes, I will miss the STI sedan...

+1. It looks far better than the regular model, but maybe a little too styled? It just doesn't have the all-out speed look of the old one.

It wouldn't surprise me it Subaru designed the STI version first either.

Anyone for a souped up Rover with a Scooby badge on the front ?...

Oh man... the Impreza was just starting to leave me cold but wow!

I love the details of it, it looks purposeful.

The new Impreza is beginning to make sense :)

I like it. It should be pretty impressive judging by those figures, i'm glad it doesn't look as lost and confused as the Evo does. Wouldn't mind one for myself.

I'm gonna hijack this thread and ask what Subaru have been smoking and how it is legal in Japan. Did you know they ruined the Legacy now for 2008? I think Subaru just feels that they need to have a wide range of incredibly ugly products to make up for the fact that most of them no longer offer driving excitement.

It is a significant improvement over the normal impreza (looks-wise).

Gotta love the curvy fenders

more pics here

It turned out quite well! I like it a lot, and there's only two downsides in this car..

1.) the rear light clusters are still hideous

2.) needs a 3-door model.

I hate to say this but, it's just not an Impreza anymore. It used to be a 2 Door coupe, with these mean lights and a wonderful sound thanks to that boxter engine. Now it bears more resemblence to a Ford Focus!

Edit: I think the windows are from a Ford Focus!

Certainly better looking than the standard car. I'd have one.

Photoshop does wonders...

^yes it does. it looks so much better than the base model, but i would rather see a 2 door coupe like the older ones or a 4 door. oh yeah, where are the gold rims and blue paint?

Uh... wow. Patent those taillights, start selling, make millions ;).

That link Leonidae posted seems to show a non-chrome grille insert. Also, some really badass five-spokes.

It's still not pretty, but this has me liking the new Impreza a lot more. It better show up in GT5, damnit.

Looks better! The stock lights on that rear still make me think Lexus RX.

And that photoshop makes it look like a beefed up Focus Mk2.

Yes, their wide range of 5 products...

Forester
Impreza
Baja
Legacy/Outback
Tribeca

But honestly, their looks are far better, than say, Pontiacs or Dodge's. Its just a matter of what style appeals to whom. And you can rant all you want, but people are buying the Impreza, and people are buying the Camry (another car many think is hideous around here), so they clearly have something going for them, because most people make looks a large part of the car buying equation.

Many of you that gripe about new cars' looks and performance, etc., tend to be a bit old fashioned. By this, I mean you prefer older cars looks and feeling and look down on technology and development, it seems. Most people think cars from the 80s look terrible, along with before then. And no single design will appeal to everyone, so when they go one way or the other from the middle ground, someone is bound to find it ugly. But they certainly aren't smoking the wacky weed at Subaru.

What they are doing is working with the hatchback resurgence, while keeping their own bits of style. After all, there are only so many shapes you can have for a 5 door hatch, and if you generally stick similar segment sizes next to each other, you'll find alot of similarities.

So no more melodramatic reactions, please.

I already saw this elsewhere, and it surprised the crap outta me. The new Impreza? Looking good? If Subaru had given the normal Impreza and WRX those fender flares and that front bumper, it wouldn't have been as much of a disappointment.

I'm still hoping for the rumored u.s.-market-only STI sedan (the normal Impreza sedan looks alright from any angle but the front), and I agree with Leonidae, a 3-door would be nice, too. I don't like 5-door hatchbacks.

The Baja has been out of production for over a year now, and was hardly more than an old Legacy anyways. And 3/4 of those products have had nasty hack jobs done to various parts of the car.

What they are doing is working with the hatchback resurgence, while keeping their own bits of style. After all, there are only so many shapes you can have for a 5 door hatch, and if you generally stick similar segment sizes next to each other, you'll find alot of similarities.
And how does that explain what Subaru just did to the Legacy? They neither changed the bodystyle, nor the interior. They just made the front end as glaringly ugly as the one on the B9 Tribeca had been. And I totally fail to see how dilution of driving excitement has anything to do with making the Impreza a somewhat more obvious hatchback than it was before.

So no more melodramatic reactions, please.
You'll note I said Legacy. L-E-G-A-C-Y. Not Impreza. I honestly have far less problems with the Impreza styling than many others here, as I never liked it styling wise since it stopped being a Coupe (though the Outback Sport is now just looks amateurish). The fact that it was redesigned also lessens its blow.
But the Legacy went from this:

To this:

FOR NO APPARENT REASON. You cannot stand there and tell me that Subaru completely screwing up a car's front end design is so they can go more mainstream, especially when it wasn't a redesign. Because if tortured and random lines strewn about a surface of a car was mainstream, the Pontiac Aztek would be the best selling car ever.
And the same very much so goes for the Forester (perhaps more so because all Subaru did to mess up the Legacy was make the grill larger):

To this:

That didn't happen when Subaru tried to "bring back the hatchback" either.
And I won't even bring up the B9 Tribeca, because everyone knows what kind of mess that will lead to.

The Forester is being brought more into line with the Tribeca look, I think. It didn't do the car much good, but not any harm either I think. Its still a box with a smaller box on wheels. :goofy:

And the Legacy is a minor change, in my opinion. It still looks fine, just matched the lines up a bit more. Looks good, in fact.

Like I said, its more of a matter of opinion on these matters.

The STi looks much better than the WRX. The WRX is just plain ugly, while the STi is meh. I liked the last STi's styling better even with the bugeye lamps. I'm just not that big of a fan of the styling, but it will eventually grow on me somewhat.

Now get rid of that sophisticated Euro dual exhaust and put a big single outlet, which would be lighter, simpler, and better for turbo power.

EDIT: So what's up with the chrome thingies next to the fog lights? Why must sports cars be fancy? WHY? Okay, I'll take the 100 spoke wheels. But the chrome stuff is way too much.

A big meh for me. I'd like to see an STI version of a sedan though. I'd still take an Evo over this any day.

I don't care for the exterior of the new Impreza's all that much but their growing on me. Personally, I like the new lines of the Legacy's. I think they have a much more aggressive stance than before. I don't care so much for the rear reflectors in the back bumper though... I'm surprised to hear they're going away from the single turbo, 2.5L to a 2.0 TwinT. Sounds interesting.... :D

Nice car, but not an Impreza. It's a Corolla TRD.

Oh and the new Legacy looks awesome...ly retarded, and the Forester better be the next xB.
