thinking about making the switch

Get in to the livery editor in Forza. Provides months of longevity to the game. Plus online racing is more in depth and better organised.

GT5 is dead after 2 months.
This is true, but only for creative minds. If you don't have an artistic bone in your body, then livery editor won't mean much to you.

BTW I believe Forza 3 is the better game all things considered.

Lol @ livery editor making a game. :dopey:
Online for gt5 is simple and easy if you ask me
so you can pretty much ignore everything Mubble said . Thats all opinion.

When did I say a livery editor makes a game and is be-all and end-all? Did you make that part up to add weight to your point?

A livery editor adds longevity when you don't want to always race, race, race. The majority of us on here enjoy the offline aspects such as modifying, tuning, painting and setting up the cars we buy. A livery editor adds to that threefold. That's in no debate.

Have you played Forza? And please don't just say 'yes' for the sake of adding weight to your opinion.

Learn to contribute to a conversation without making silly comments like "ignore everything he said". That's disrespectful.

And yes, the online aspect is down to opinion, but again, there's no denying that GT5 lacks substance in this respect. Where is qualifying? Where are multi-round races and accumulating points ie. a mini championship? I'm not saying I don't enjoy the online racing when I race with my friends with headsets etc, but it's still thin compared to Forza - and I'm saying that as a GT fanboy.

I've played Forza 1,2 and 3 pretty extensively. Played GT1 and GT2 extensively. The first thing you should do when trying to decide what games you like from looking at any forum is completely disregard any posts that are all smoochy and lovey about any game or dev. These people typically live in fantasy land. You should read the complaints about each game and that will typically tell you what you really need to know about the reality of what the game is.

Main complaints about FM3

1. Multiplayer is really really bad - forces you into a handful of presets, not all of them even racing presets (stupid crash em up games). "Hopper" lobbies are dominated by the same handful of AWD cars that dominate the LB's.
2. PI system is incredibly flawed - AWD owns all in FM3. AWD swaps are king. You can even make AWD Dodge Vipers and AWD 60's era American Musclecars.
3. Bad repetitive tracks - FM3 has very slight edge over GT5 in real world tracks. But GT's fantasy tracks win by a mile. Forza has bigger track "number". But that comes from multiple tracks being cut up into little bits and then the reverse versions of the same tracks.
4. Bad repetitive career - more events than GT, but still repetitive, and still griding to get outrageously priced in game cars (up to 20 million credits)
5. No racing support - no rules or regs for any series, no qualifying, removal of many key racing features from previous versions.

Main complaints about GT5
1. No leaderboards - Forza kills GT in the leaderboard department. You can find years of replay value just from the leaderboard system. GT5 has basically 4 leaderboards going at a time, and they only last 2 weeks, then vanish. 1000's of cars and 4 leaderboards...really bad decision there.
2. Quirkyness abounds - Ok, washing your virtual car was a cute little gimmick back in the days of GT1. Now it's just dumb. Oil changing the same thing. Car building is full of quirks. For alot of the time trials you first have to run the car into the ground to lower it's hp before you add parts. No point.
3. Even worse repetitive career - There's not alot to be said here. It's just about as bad as it could be. Again, ridiculously priced cars (20 million credits) are going to force you to grind away for days just for the privledge of unlocking content.
4. No racing support - same thing as Forza. Apparently racing all these cars is not the grand vision of either Turn 10 or PD because neither support racing with anything more than lip service.

Of course there are other complaints, but those are my main ones with each game. To be totally honest, they are both incredibly flawed games. Both have been met with loads of criticism from long times fans of each (or both) series. Depends on what you're looking for in your game as to which is better. GT definitely has the better physics. I prefer the tracks and cars (don't care about premium in car view) of GT as well. And it's a given that the multiplayer of GT5 is far better than FM3. If you have to pick one, I think the best bet is GT5.

Same reason I switched from Forza 3 to GT5: just got boring.

So far, haven't been disappointed with GT5. Still fun to grab a car and run it around the Top Gear Test Track.

No, you can't make an offroad Ferrari. Only certain cars (and there's plenty of 'em) can go offroad.

Also, there's a track generator. Set up parameters for what you want and it automatically creates a track. Look up on YouTube for some videos.

Other than that, I say make the switch. Still waiting for Forza 4, but got GT5 in the mean time, and enjoying every inch of it.

With comments like "GT5 is dead in 2 months" and yet you still here in the premier GT5 forum. Why would anyone disappointed in a game lurk in the game's forum. Why .. why .. why?

+1

I've never really been into racing games until I started playing Forza 3 at a mates house and then I was hooked. I soon bought GT5 Prologue because I had a PS3 and not a 360 and enjoyed it.

When I first got GT5 I was very much disappointed because I compared it to Forza 3 and the livery editor for me was and still is a huge miss. I wanted to return it after a 2 days, but I kept playing and playing and slowly found myself putting the receipt back in case and eventually the bin.

One of the most exhilarating experiences I have ever had in any racing game is on GT5, when I was using a the Corvette ZR1 RM on the nurburgring and was doing 180mph on the main straight on the narrow track. It was brilliant. Recently now I have got bored of it and will probably play the odd race now and then until another update comes out or a DLC.

If they added a liverly editor then I would certainly be addicted to it again, I love making my cars look unique and not the ****e you see on fast and furious. It will never happen though.

If I ever get bored of GT5, I might just pick up Forza 3. Why? Just because it'll be a change of pace, different events, tracks, and cars. Different atmosphere.

That's the same reason you should enjoy GT5. It's not a totally different genre, but it's more of what you like, just presented in a different manner.

How many cars does Forza 3 have anyway?

These are not in GT5 just so you know:tdown:

I get a PS3 in a few weeks(I know I said I had one, but I really just borrowed one from a friend), plus GT5 with it. Forza has run out of cars that make it interesting, no neew tracks, and plus, GT5 has teh Rally. one thing I have to ask: what are the ups and downs? can I make a Ferrari into a rally car? any SUVs? also, have the Kei-cars kept up?

It all really depends on what you want in a racing game and also the controller or wheel you use.

If you really like FM3 but are bored with it then I would say wait for Dirt 3 for your rally fix and play that until FM4.

Your question about making a Ferrari into a rally car and SUV's makes me suspect that GT5 is not for you. :)

I think MowTin hit the nail of the head.

Your question about making a Ferrari into a rally car and SUV's makes me suspect that GT5 is not for you. :)

If you come here from ANY other decent racing franchise, you are going to start thinking that GT players are mostly fanboys. Other than the physics, and a superb Nürbergring, there's hardly a thing in the game that most others don't better.

But play it anyway. It will SURE make you appreciate FM4 when it comes out (or maybe even Shift 2) even more!

I'll admit, I've become a bit of a GT5 fanboy. But that's only because I can't ****ing believe how much good **** PD put into this game. Knowing what I know now about GT5, I would have paid $200 for this game (feel really guilty buying this game used for $42 :( but oh well  ).

Bought this game much later than most people (got it early last week) so I didn't feel the disappointment at launch.

Also, I have a sick ass 3D Plasma TV and GT5 in 3D is ****ing awesome. Playing GT5 on my 42" 3D Plasma with my 5.1 Surround sound system is so freaking immersive. I almost always race in 3D (I use 2D for the more casual stuff in GT5 like watching replays, taking photos).

Can't get 3D racing from Forza 3, Shift2 or TDU2 on the consoles.

People say 3D is a 'gimmick' but to me its a 'gimmick' like 5.1 Surround sound is a 'gimmick'. 3D isn't necessary and its not going to make a bad game good but it does make the gaming experience much more immersive. Also, 3D TV's aren't that expensive anymore (bought my 42" Panasonic Plasma for $800 new; bought a pair of used 3D glasses for $60). 3D TV's only going to get cheaper.

So after considering all of that (3D racing, 5.1 Surround Sound, GT5's great graphics, Photo mode, 1000+ cars, really deep single player, good online community, B Spec remote racing from a smartphone)..... I have no problems saying GT5 is one of the best games I have ever owned and played.

So it sort of rubs me the wrong way when people trash GT5.

If you truly are a racing fan, you'd have both the PS3 and 360 (and DC, PS2, PSX, N64, Xbox, ...) and all the games they have the offer. GT5 isn't the be all and end all of car games. FM3 isn't either. There are too many specialty games spread across all consoles over the years to restrict (limit) yourself to just one platform.

That said, to me FM3 is the better overall game. Better racing in FM3 from AI, collision/contact dynamics, and damage. The racing in GT5 is a snoozefest unfortunately. The rally racing in GT5 just doesn't feel right. I'd personally dig up an old copy of McRae, even the first Dirt or many of the fine rally titles on the PS2.

GT5 is a racing game so I don't care about the livery editor!
GT5 has a good physics(I have played GTR2 for years and I can confirm you that!)
I'm playing GT5 every day about 3hours with my friends,we organize a endurance race every week, for example this weekend we are racing our mini 24H of Lemans(about 40laps)with SuperGt-500 cars!yes I admit that the public lobby's are very boring but if you play it with you're friend or with you're community(like mine) its very enjoyable!
I don't car about Gt-mode,I have played it only for make credit and buy my favuorite cars!in conclusion,if you wantreally to enjoy GT5 you should play it online in your private lounge only with you're friends or GT-community!

Make the switch any racing fan or car enthusiast will love gt5

from *MY* point of view, if you love cars and racing, get the ps3. I refuse to argue whether GT5 is better than forza or iracing or any other game. Each has their strong points and they all have their less than favorable points. I can say there are things about forza 3 that id kill to have in gt5 and vice versa. So I guess my real point is, if you can afford a PS3 with GT5, why not do it? what do you have to lose? Its really quite simple.

When I race...

I want it to FEEL like a race car. GT5 pretty much nails that 👍

I want it to LOOK like a race car. Only a few GT cars have that, and they have no livery editor, so you and your friends' cars look identical. 👎

I want it to SOUND like racing. Epic fail from PD. 👎

I want it to BE racing. Nerfed up AI pretty much rules that out in GT5. 👎

I want the RULES of racing. No luck there in GT5 👎

I want the ATMOSPHERE of racing. Qualifying, flag girls, Victory Lane, series, mid-race tuning adjustments, green and checkered flags. All absent in GT5 👎

But hey! Good physics! Now all we need is a RACING game tacked on...

The only reasons why I ever purchased a Playstation123 was 90% for the GT series. It always tried to break some kind of new ground with each iteration. I started my couch racing with it and I was extremely surprised that Forza really came into the picture and had me think twice.

I'm not going to nit pick everything since it's already been said about the pros and cons of each; it's already been beaten to death. What I will say is that Forza3 to me feels at this point a much more complete game.

I purchased a racing game therefore I want to race. I want to tune my machine, go race and win (or lose). I've always felt that the Forza series did this so much better. There's the career mode and the extra events. It's smoother, keeps it moving and keeps me less bored. If I'm tired of career mode I'll just go to the other events; there are plenty to do there and at least for me plenty of replay value.

The machines are trickier to handle in Forza for me. It just seems to require a lot more concentration to keep it all together and yeah the AI is leaps and bounds more challenging than the GT5 variant. You push a certain AI driver (or not) named M.Rossi and he will definitely push you back. What I don't like is that if you do get to the back lappers they will NEVER move over and yes they can ruin your race!

The races where PI is implemented for the most part can keep the races very close; especially at the higher levels where every mistake hurts. The drivetrain swaps have seriously hurt the online play and maybe even the offline mode but it doesn't matter to me as I don't have a single swapped machine. GT5 added their PP into the mix but why now?

I enjoy tuning maybe even more than the actual racing. I love how you can tune on the fly, save your tuned settings for whatever reason. More importantly I love how easy it is to get attached to certain vehicles because of the livery or the ability to go up/down the PI ladder easily (the audio from Forza really does blow the GT series out of the water).

With GT5 it just seems like a step backwards in many regards. There's so much good about it but there's just as equally bad too. I love automobiles but I don't need 600+ cars. Worse off I don't need the less desired variants of every Lancer, Skyline, Miata, RX7, WRX, etc.

The driving experience is pretty spot on and it's probably the main reason why I'm still playing it. The tuning abilities are lacking and without even a damned save feature that means I've got to purchase every available car I enjoy racing online. It can be a bit of a nightmare especially since I tend to spend a huge amount of time tuning each online car.

Don't get me wrong I have started to grown onto GT5 but at this point it's only so I can complete my garage and go race. I like the options (photography, special events, seasonal events) that have been added but it makes you wonder what they had been doing for the last 5+ years; even more so that this game should have shipped much more completed than half a$$ed.

I just feel like there's so much fluff that was added that they thinned the line too much. The expression is that it's good at what it's suppose to do but it's not great. I don't care what people say about how the hype killed it because it's really PD who lost focus. Do they even play their own game? If they did how the heck did they miss the obnoxiously large elephant in the corner?

Thankfully PD is patching their mess up but for how long and more importantly when are they really going to fix some key features and focus less on adding extra content to blur the lines.

Why am I so critical of GT5? Probably because it should have been more polished. It's not so much the 'Forza is better than GT5' to me but why GT5 feels so incomplete.

Enjoy both if you can. When I'm running BSpec I'll usually be tuning or racing on the 360. If I'm getting burnt out on GT5 (which has seriously taken about 85% of my video game time) I always have that option to play another racing game and I feel like that's one big reason why I still play both...

If anything I do enjoy GT5. I've said it before, it's like homework. You do it and sometimes you like it (most of the times you don't). I remember once reading online someone said that their only problem with GT5 was that they already played Forza3. I felt the same way...

Ok afro1
FM3 has over 115 tracks.
FM3 has an INFINITE number of cars. Seeing that you can put your own graphics on a car that makes it a new car. Sorta like having 50 Skylines in one game.

Let's be honest here. By that reasoning (which I believe is kinda correct), GT5 has an infinite number of tracks due to the Course Maker. I may be wrong though, I don't know how does it work exactly.

As for what I say the reasoning is kinda correct: I don't consider a car sprayed in a different way to be a different car. V-Spec or V-Spec II, though similar cars, are not the same. If GT5 manages to show the differences accurately, that's a different matter.

EDIT: Sorry, I just noticed I brought this from the dead.

FM3 has engine swaps, drivetrain swaps (right?) and a higher degree of customization. That would definitely up the number of DIFFERENT cars, right there. No way a RWD GT-R is the same car as an AWD GT-R with a Ferrari engine in it, etc..

Mind you, some of it gets ridiculous, but if you are just looking for bragging rights on car count, this HAS to factor in...

You can only swap engines within a manufacturer, and only most of the time. But yes it is a cool feature.

Sadly, between the swaps and the PP-like system there are a number of cars which dominate the game which don't exist. (ie AWD Viper)

You are going to find, eventually, once the dust settles down, that there is a dominant car in GT5 at most levels. It's just that the game hasn't been out too long, and the leaderboards for quickly finding this information out aren't up yet.

But once they are, expect to see the same jumping on the bandwagon as any other game gets.

It is one of the best features in the game. With it it is possible too make hundreds of different cars combinations. Example i have six GTR Spec-v's all of them have different bodykits, Tire width, Rim size and Liveries. This equels more cars. If i like my Gallordo Balboni style i can make it RWD. Am really missing it especially in GT5.:grumpy:

forza 4 is coming and it will be awesome because theres very few limitations in forza

gt5=VERY LIMITED

This is very true, and it's one reason I hope that leaderboards are never added to the game.

If you were a school tutor. GT5 is the genius kid who has real talent and potential and moments of brilliance... but does whatever he feels like, and misdirects his efforts in the same, slightly disappointing and confusing way, always. Do you love it's work for what it is, and will probably always be?..

...Or do you prefer the more normal kids who consistently turn out realistic and logical efforts more in tune with what you're asking.

Did you read my WHOLE post? Or did you stop there? As can be CLEARLY seen I was being sarcastic. I think it's important people read the entire thread before replying, especially if the thread is only 2 or 3 pages long.

1. Multiplayer is really really bad - forces you into a handful of presets, not all of them even racing presets (stupid crash em up games). "Hopper" lobbies are dominated by the same handful of AWD cars that dominate the LB's.

This I half way agree with. Multiplayer with randoms=bad. Multiplayer with friends in a private room is a TON of fun. There are tons of options to make the game fresh. You can run heats, teams, etc.

I made a Balboni as well 👍 I can't even count the number of rotary miatas I had. Plus the ability to make a triple rotor RX-7 or 8, definitely cool.

I have to admit though it also lead to some broken cars, like the AWD Viper, and the datsun with the GTR swaps.

That is a interesting point. I don't think I ever hang around a game forum if I'm disappoint with the game. It's almost like we have some here trying to convert people over to become Forza worshipers.

GT5 is a great game and worth it to me. Still If you can I wouldn't trade in the X360 since Forza 4 will be out this fall.

Well, I'll try to give my reason.

I may be disappointed with GT5 for right now, but I haven't given up on it. Otherwise, I would have gotten rid of it and my PS3. Some people have taken this drastic action. I still believe GT5 can be the excellent game some expected if they keep it coming with the updates. And they are on the right track so far.

However, I still have yet to see the things that PD said were coming, such as GT Driver's Club and Matchmaking, which I'm relying on the most to keep playing this game.

There have to be some detractors to prevent the place becoming an orgy of mindless GT5 and PD leg humping. There have to be people around to remind folks that there are better games. A reality check is an important thing, as discontentment drives evolution. Besides which this forum offers far more than just the GT franchise with off topic and the other games section.

The OP should not swap his system. I found trying to play GT5 after FM3 was like being allowed out at recess in school and finding an awesome playground with loads of stuff to play on. Then going back in again to do more work, then coming outside for lunch to find that there is one solitary rocking horse left to play on. Forza has many, many strings to it's bow, and if you are bored of it then you need to explore the game more. Trust me, if you are bored of Forza, you will be bored of GT5 far quicker.
