This game had so many awesome cars that we'll never see again

And the Intrepid and HKS drag cars.

GT2 laid down the road map for all of the following GT games and even now with GT5. Yet I still think it's nowhere near to being a complete game in Yamauchi-san's mind.

When I look at the list it makes me sad because there are some great cars on there, but clearly we can't have our cake and eat it too.

Anyone that hoped PD would do car interiors, or was glad when they saw that they were doing car interiors, anyone that demanded the astonishing level of "photo-mode or you don't see it" detail. Anyone that thought Forza set the benchmark by modelling interiors and that they were a must-have. It's your fault. :)

Imagine the cars we could have had if they didn't have to do the interiors, and didn't have to panda to photo-mode graphical detail fanatics. All that time wasted doing details on crap you never see if you actually just play the game. Every standard car could have been improved, plus dozens added no doubt, if they'd done "sub-premium" cars rather than the show-case cars.

Until they find a much easier way of making digital copies of cars down to the stitching on the leather and the embossing on the seats, or until people realise that all that time-consuming crap doesn't make the game better and they just stop doing it, the car list is going to be lacking.

Man, just reading this thread makes me want to play GT2 again. I'm actually in the middle of the game right now, but I'm going to finish it after today. GT2 just has the best car list of all the GT games. I don't care if it doesn't have Ferrari and Lamborghini. And the fact that the majority of the cars could be race modified makes it even better. I loved my blue w/white stripes Dodge Viper RM. Plus, GT2 has more RUFs than GT5 does. My only complaint about the game is that you can only have 100 cars. :grumpy:

Honestly. Honestly. How incredibly awesome would it be for Polyphony Digital to re-release GT2 with an online mode, 16 car grid for online races and make it available on PSN?

I'm not kidding when I say I will abandon GT5 and never look back if they did this.

As long as the original is still around and easy to source.
The IMSA 300ZX is still around. It was at Daytona this year during the Rolex 24-Hour race.

I think it should be said, though, that the car that was in GT2 was not the 300ZX GTS used in IMSA. It was the 300ZX GTS that was used in JGTC in 1997. And I'm not sure if that car is still around.

I dont think the Renault Laguna Racecar, the Taipan Trampio Mitsubishi, the Storia Rallycar (awesome little thing) nor the grand daddy of them all, the Sillouette Skyline have been mentioned.

I was never really impressed with the Storia - there was nothing about it that stood out, and it was always struggling in my memories... But I think it's biggest flaw in my mind was that it lacked personality - it was very anonymous.

But the Monte Carlo Mini didn't make it either, now that I think of it, and THAT was a fun little car!👍

What's funny is people complained about those redundant models when GT2 was released, and they're still complaining now. Kaz has said in an interview that back when GT was in creation (mid '90s) Japanese drivers knew of all the differences in the various models, and since GT is a Japanese game, it was easiest for PD to implement all these "repeat" models, because they actually did make a difference to the Japanese gamer at the time.

But he admitted (sorry if this is a spoiler, jeff) that especially in GT5, this idea is basically outdated in today's world. He seems to be wishing he could have done things different.

Personally, I say more is better overall. I'd rather have more cars than less. But it wouldn't hurt if (in the future games) they could just focus on adding the tons of American and European cars that made a difference. Maybe even introduce the world to a Skoda or something made in a former communist country. I would drive it!

Skoda (we say Škoda here) would be a nice adding.
Especially Felicia from 90's (very light and agile car to some 50 mph) is my favorite. It only needs harder Shocks.
Drove 3 Felicias, and i was dreaming that one day..maybe even in Gran Turismo :) So the Kit-Car version.
Only in GT2 was Skoda just mentioned briefly in VW description.

And agree too, that adding more everyday cars with the option to tune it to some 3 - 5x power with RM would be VERY nice.
Because of this i like GT2 most. BTCC cars from that era was something other than NFS or else had.
Its good to have Lambos, Ferrs, McLarens, but we (or i) need some more normal cars too in GT5/6.
Im seeing GT as a guide to evolution of car (or their manufacter) developing throughout years.
Not only the newest cars and most powerful cars i seek in GT.

But there is a problem with intersection time, money, licencing problems and sales. :(

How incredibly awesome would it be for Polyphony Digital to re-release GT2 with an online mode, 16 car grid for online races and make it available on PSN?

We could have BTCC/JTCC/ATCC/etc touring car races. There would be epic Le Mans races (even without Le Mans). The list of awesome goes on if that happened.

hey, i was about to start a thread about GT1/2 online mode as a bonus part of next GT :-)

Yes, or the S2000 with the GT2 racing modification; to be featured in my next youtube video.

One of my favorite cars in the game is the Trampio Taivon FTO GT. Fantastic little car that could do anything.

Why will we never see them again? They could always include them in gt6
Some of them (Vector, possibly Venturi) would be practically impossible to get licences for. Other ones (old JGTC cars in particular) would be very difficult to model to Premium level, because those cars aren't around anymore to be photographed and modeled.

Agreed! I still have my original gt2 memory card after all of these years, and this car is still one of the best FF racing cars ever, even though I'm not a big FF car fan!

I really love the TVR Speed 12 in GT2, I think I have seen it in 1 other game but can't remember the name.

long list i must say, but i would add any subsequent generations of that cars if existed (like Mondeo mkII then mkIII then mkIV, maybe even mkI)
that would be HUGE and nice list in GT6 :) of course on many of them you could apply R modification

I don't get the point in that list... Are that cars that where in past GT's but aren't in GT5, isn't it? In that case, Aston Martin DB7 Coupé is in GT5. Isn't it the same car?

I don't get the point in that list... Are that cars that where in past GT's but aren't in GT5, isn't it? In that case, Aston Martin DB7 Coupé is in GT5. Isn't it the same car?

Cars in GT2 that aren't in GT games anymore.

I should add to The Vanishing Boy's post, that we WERE going to get the Jaguar XK180, but in the end, we never did.

So that could count as a car for that list.

I don't think FPVs from 2004 and 2006 were in GT2 to start with...

I do find how 'incomplete' GT2 is both sad and frustrating. It's a great game. As others have said, a glorious list of cars, some of which we will almost never see again coupled with a simple 'career mode' and of course, those glorious RMs.

I would kill for an upscaled and updated GT2 via PSN. You know Kaz secretly wants to do it.. Although, I'd like some of the incomplete things to be complete where possible. e.g. Real BTCC cars. The decade they tried to emulate was the greatest in the sport's history. And GT2 has at least 9 base models to use

Renault Laguna, Vauxhall Vectra, Nissan Primera 2.0 eGT, Nissan Primera GT, Peugeot 406 sedan, Ford Mondeo, Honda Accord sedan, Audi A4, Alfa Romeo 155 (Not quite the right model, but close enough. The Alfa Touring Car in GT2 was a Class I car) and the BMW mod in GT2 wasn't correct but I'm digressing here..

Endurances and the eponymous 'Supertouring' Challenge would be so much fun with these real McCoys.

Definitely not thread appropriate except that it's a wishlist of what I'd love to see in a re-release of GT2 or in a future GT, a list of cars that would rock:

Lupo GTI
Skyline GT-R R32 HKS Zero-R '89
Astra 1800 GTE 3 door hatch Mk1 '83

Fiat Strada 105TC

MX-5 NA special commemoratice edition 24 hours of Le Mans with BBR turbo conversion standard and 787B color scheme
Escort ZX2 S/R

list a work in progress, I'll have to email it to Kaz some day...
