Thoughts about coming to the game?

Hello,

Quite satisfied with GT Sport but in need to have something a little different from time to time, is Project Cars worth it?

Never tried it so no clue how it works. Is there a career? If yes, how does it work?
What's the online? Is it only leagues that you need to join or just daily races like GT Sport, etc...

Thanks in advance.

This thread covers the career, which personally I don't play:

Do you have a wheel? If so definitely get the game if not you should be fine if you are above average with a controller.

Buy the Deluxe Edition instead of the basic game as it contains very good DLC cars.

Advantages over GTS - logical car list with cars in proper classes particularly the historic race cars.
Multi-class racing.
Adjustable AI which isn't chase the rabbit, but can provide a proper race.
Dynamic time of day - e.g. night into day or day into night Le Mans style simulations.
Adjustable weather.
Adjustable field of view so you can tailor the cockpit view to suit etc.
Much larger track list including real historic circuits (I think 3 or 4 times as many circuits as GTS)
More realistic tyre model and vehicle physics - cars will be more realistic, but sometimes harder to drive and less forgiving.
Live track - rubber builds up, grip levels vary etc.
No grinding - all cars immediately available to use without wasting time grinding for credits.
Large number of different car classes so possible for players to race cars which they are interested in.
Large number of race car liveries.

Disadvantages over GTS
No livery editor
No Scapes feature
Some cars hard to control
Online less popular so best to join a league for online
No race numbers for road cars

If you are wanting a change from GTS also consider Assetto Corsa Ultimate Edition, but again probably requires that you be above average with a hand controller or have a wheel. Wreckfest - very entertaining - surprisingly good racing, tracks and wheel force feedback.

@Sick Cylinder really good summary, I would only add one comment on your last paragraph.

This may be different on PS4, but on PC I find AC borderline undrivable with a pad. I'm fine in PC2 with an adjustment to the speed sensitivity, but cannot get on with AC at all.

I find AC on gamepad not too bad apart from it seems too easy to get full lock in a slower corner resulting in the front tyres just scrubbing and understand. Although that's on full controller left or right, if you don't push the over all the way then the steering comes back.
AC is a different experience though. The graphics on console are good but when you switch to Project Cars it's so much more polished.
Obviously AC on a PC is somewhat better due to the modding scene

Go buy ACC now. You buy it now and you get free DLC. I think Pcars 2 is pretty much done. The game freezes and it's 4 yrs old. ACC is coming to consoles. We as console guys will get a true sim racing game

Fine if you are into GT3 - I'm sure it will be the best game for that.

I'm like you - quite satisfied with GTS, but was really encouraged by some members on this board, which is in contrast to the GTS Daily Races thread, for instance. Bunch of aggressive knobs who are into bragging about their 'expertise' and lap times, all the while displaying a condescending attitude to newbies and slower drivers.

The game itself? Just wow. I have yet to actually play it, but the degree of customization and career progression options is just amazing; go and have a look at the PC2 website. I was gobsmacked.

A BIG plus you omitted, was the damage model. In GTS, you have a punt, and there are no consequences due to no damage to cars, hence dirty drivers take advantage of this.

I think the term is "You've got to GiT GuD" :P

One thing that so many of them don't realize is that part of gittin gud is actually learning how to deal with slower drivers. Going back to when I used to play online a ton in GT5 there were lots of really really fast drivers who very rarely crashed on their own(there were others who seemed fast but did crash but that's a different subject). The good ones could follow me two feet off my bumper all the way around the track and whenever they wanted to they'd find a clean place to go by with no contact and nobody having to make any frantic adjustments to avoid going off.

Most of the others... well they seem to have gone to the PC2 bot school of overtaking "I'm faster right here right now! go alongside! you stop and wait! *boom! screech!*" Those were the ones I tended to go back past while they were parked off-track from trying to pass the next car. I often didn't technically beat them though, since they frequently seemed to have mysterious connection issues after that.

That makes me wonder, i often start a online lobby race with approx. 14 players. Sometimes, higher licensed drivers quit the race after crashing or other reason. Do you receive any points for them, if you finish the race??

I think people lose a lot of points if they quit - much better to stay and just try to get the best finish.

Yeah obviously! I never quit a race if i don't have to, but to me it seems weird that if you stay and already were faster than the "leavers", you won't get rewarded for "beating" them.

Im going to openly eat crow here after in the past having troubles with getting good feelings from this game. Coming from GTS what happened yesterday is very telling...
So, seat of pants fov and camera and seat positions I did over a few hours on the weekend got me rolling in this game..
After using an fov calculator I found I was in good shape just 4 degrees over mathematically correct. So double checked and got that right.
Anyways I’ve tried to get my daughter into GTS but seemed no matter what I put her in she just didn’t like it.
Last night had her try the slowest escort in this game.
I walked away and came back after ten minutes and she was into it.
She liked it. So do I but that’s beside the point. With no gaming experience to speak of, but her being an adult driver she sat down and was able to drive this and enjoy it. All she’s ever said before when I got her on gts was “I don’t like it”
This she said “it’s pretty good”
So that’s true story there.
Now that I am getting my feet on the ground in this game I’m learning what so many were trying to hint at to me over the past year or so and I semi reluctantly have to admit...
You guys were right about this game and I was wrong about it due to my own ignorance of being able to adjust it correctly for my setup.
Everything comes together in this when you spend time to get good settings. Fov.
Then all of a sudden like magic the ffb works damn good, I’ve been finding cool stuff in here you cannot get on PS4 pro anywhere else...There’s one kart track, forget the name but it has almost a baby corkscrew turn, just fun...
Brands in this game is brilliant, this morning did a quick race in the old e30 bmw and man, so good.
I was wrong about pc2.

Spread the word, brotha!

It’s way too easy to dismiss this game. I know because I did just that over 2 years ago.

I bought PC2 because I wanted an offline experience with a career mode. I had never heard of Project Cars. Didn’t even know PC1 existed. All I know is that my first choice was GTS, because that’s the game I actually knew. But, I read that it was devoid of a career mode and would be primarily for ONLINE racing. That didn’t appeal to me so I bought PC2 out of necessity. Tried it, found it to be really hard, nearly impossible to complete a lap. Decided it was terrible and bought GTS

Played that for some time but found it lacking the “raw feel” (don’t know how else to express it) I was craving. Every car felt and sounded similar. It is a visually stunning game and I have enormous respect for Kaz and his deep love for motorsports, but something didn’t FEEL right.

Went back to PC2 and it’s like the heavens opened up and a dove descended with a note that read “Take your time. Go slow. Savor, don’t devour, this meal. Listen to the wise men (extremely helpful and kind PC2 veterans) and become one with Motorsport “

Of course I take poetic license here. It’s just a game.

But, it feels so right, despite its flaws. I sometimes think that Kaz may be playing PC2 in secret.

Just joined the PC2 gang for about a month now, and without copying you, but I have come and share the same point of view as you both...

This game has so much potential.

I am currently running my FFB settings as follows:
75
100
50
50

Mind sharing what your settings are ?

Just so we can compare notes...
Obviously a lot of veterans around here says the FFB will differ from car to car

But approximately, what are your settings?

Glad you both saw the light ;)

I’m running raw
Gain - change per car to taste
60
50
50
For me the ffb only started to make sense once my fov got close to right.
So far seems to me there’s a little squish or smooth window in the ffb/tire loading and that’s where I kinda try to hang out in terms of cornering. Feels quite good to me when I get it right for a bit. Been driving the little bmw e30, the middle escort and did a bit of Porsche gt3. Lots to learn and get used to, not much time right now for me to play.
Re raw comment, yes I agree the game’s gritty in a good way, great fun spending time in something new to me :)

Glad to have you on-board.

I agree that Brands in GTS and PC2 are like different tracks, the FFB and better surface modelling in PC2 makes corners that are just meh in GTS, the challenge they really should be. Sheene curves and paddock hill bend are probably the best examples of this, and you have so many more tracks that GTS simply doesn't have to explore as well (give Imola a go, it's utterly wonderful).

I would also suggest giving the Formula Jr, Ginetta Jnr and Ginetta GT5 a go as well, as they are great to get started with.

In terms of sharing FFB, this is mine (T300 user).

It seems everyone settles on something quite different.

For what it's worth on my T300RS I run Raw
100 Gain
volume changes per car based on the clipping graph and how I feel in corners, usually 45-50, sometimes around 35 for usually old cars - it feels good having stiffer steering(no power steering) but you lose so much detail that I seem to make mistakes... and sometimes as high as 60 for some cars with really light steering.
60 Tone
41 FX(I'm sure the 1 makes a huge difference )

Until I change it all again.

The problem with assigning buttons on keypad to adjust the volume & tone is it only goes up/down in increments of 5 (on xbox anyway)

So if I start at 30 then it'll go 35, 40 etc. But if I started at 28 then it goes 33, 38 etc, which is a right pain in the bottom :)

I almost tried the Ginetta jr last night. I’ll definitely hop in that one. Driving in PC2 is so visceral. I really enjoy it.

Glad to hear you are enjoying game!

You will love the Ginetta Junior and GT5.

But I also strongly recommend these (default loose):
BMW 2002 SW
Mercedes 300 SL 1952 - try at Rouen Les Essarts
Lotus 25 - as above
Lotus 40 - Laguna Seca
Lotus 49 - Silverstone Classic
Aston Martin DBR1 1959 - wet at Watkins Glen GP

The above are probably my favourite cars in the game and have an incredible feel.

Favourite DLC cars:
Porsche 917K and Ferrari 512M at Classic La Sarthe at night
1966 Mustang - Silverstone Classic or almost anywhere

Ahh yes, Watkins Glen GP, another utterly brilliant track in PC2.

@Groundfish the '66 Mustang will also introduce you to something missing from GTS as well, brake fade!

A few of my favourites
Escort RS1600
Ferrari 488 GT3
Ferrari 512S
Porsche 917K
AMG GT GT3
Honda Civic RX
Jaguar XJR9
Sauber C9
Audi R8

Tracks
Imola
Monza
Brno
Silverstone Classic
Azure Coast
California Highway
Brands Hatch
Donington
Lydden Hill Rallycross
Indianapolis ( try a day night race, wonderful )
