My solution: GET A WHEEL
Purchase a set of these for about $12 on Amazon.

They extend the stick providing a longer range of motion for throttle, braking and steering. They are fantastic. I am nearly as fast with the DS3 as with my wheel.
Best solution is to use DS2 ( PS2 ) stick, buy USB adapter, and you can even use the face buttons accurately. I am using one, and I can run high BB using the face buttons without ABS in GT5, and I also can modulate the gas accurately with the face buttons. DS3 can't beat DS2 button travel and response, I need to press almost 3 times harder than DS3 on my DS2 to get full 100% brake or gas.
Here's a tip : Assign L2 for brake, while using face buttons for brake and gas, this way you can left foot brake mid corner, or when you apply too much throttle.
Watch my No ABS videos linked on my sig to see how I use DS2 stick face buttons to brake and gas accurately![]()
This is only useful if you have a DS2 lying around and a adaptor. There is no point buying another DS2 Controller and a adaptor just because you need a precise throttle and braking sensitivity but if you really need it that badly then try it :![]()
"But I prefer the analog stick method!" someone says? Well, good for you. For most players it feels unnatural and even if that works for you it should still come standard for all racing games to use L2/R2 for brake and throttle. No game should ever map them to face buttons by default.
In short wheel is the only way to go, no matter how good you get with the controller
Haha obviously that's fine, people can play the game however they choose. I'm just saying if you play a lot, I think the added fun and realism value of the wheel are worth the money.
Side note: a $300 wheel isn't a round piece of plastic, they're actually quite nicely built, leather and steel![]()
Its much to difficult with the damn right analog stick. Same thing with the X button.
Anyone have any tips on how to make half-throttling more easier for DS3 user?
Is there any special controllers or would it be a good idea to change button commands? (L2 R2)
R2 is best for me but the 360 controller triggers are SO much better because they weren't an afterthought. I really hope they have a rethink of the PS controller for the next console because the current one is so uncomfortable if you haven't got tiny hands.
Does anyone have a good L2/R2 brake/gas mapping for they'd like to share? I'd be curious to hear how you have it all mapped out.
Sorry can't remember what I have on the triangle can't be important as I definitely don't use it![]()
Completely my opinion, but I feel if GT is worth enough of your time to play consistently, be a member of an (awesome) forum, etc. it's worth it to spend a little bit on a wheel.
Ive played the GT games exclusively with a PS controller since GT2 until 2 days ago when I got a G27. Now I wonder what game I spent so many years playing....

Reverse? That seems pretty important to me![]()
With the Accelerator, I find the sensitivity jumps up and down. There's too much dead zone in the first 25%, 50% isn't quite 50% acceleration, and then the sensitivity jumps up sharply after 50% pressure on the R2 button. If you are half throttling perfectly and put on the tiniest amount of pressure, the on screen graph on the accelerator jumps up way too far for the amount you're pressing, and then flickers up and down if you try and correct it. At least that's what I find anyway.
