just curious how much tires make a difference in the race... like fresh tires what are the best for short road races? and like, what are the differences in the tires etc? are they worth 40grand for qualifying tires?

It all depends on the length of the race if you are doing a 10 lap race you arent going to want the super soft tires becasue they wear out very fast and you wouldnt be able to turn like you normaly can.

im not sure if this works in the professional races, but for any A, B, or IB race, use n2 tires; it makes your grip equal to the AI which causes some fantastic competition. it can be frustrating making your way through the pack to win it on the last lap, but it is a blast. youll have to tweak your car to win some races (the SL cup i had to buy an SL65 and do all tuning except power to barely win) and the Aspec points vary, the SL cup was at most about 12 points, but i have gotten as high as 177 points at different races. also in using the tires, you cant outbrake or outcorner the AI, so it makes it a lot more realistic.

When it comes to tires, I ussualy go for the soft ones, but depending on the race time I get the ones that wont turn red after a couple laps. For most of the professional races I ran Sport tires and they have decent grip with an ok life span. But yea it all depends on the amount of power, the length of the track, road surfaces and race time. But I dont think that the 40 grand tires are worth spending such amount of money on.

I seem to recall that blue does indeed mean that the tires are cold.
Cold tires = less grip.

The reason you see NASCAR & F1 cars swerving on the track during caution laps and the like is to keep the tires wam. Drag racers do burnouts before staging for the same reason.

I *think* that the colors in GT are:
Blue = Cold / Minimum grip
Green = Maximum grip / No Wear
Yellow = Moderate grip / Moderate Wear
Red = No grip / Maximum Wear

Of course, you have all the transient colors like bluish green or orange...those are of course when your tires are between the colors listed above.

Just about the only thing Super Soft tires are good for is drag racing or extremely short races. I usually don't get more than about 2 laps on any road course out of the supersoft and they're really trashed (bright red) after the 2nd lap, so you could have trouble keeping up due to no traction.

I'll typically run medium tires across the board, but may use soft tires for shorter races with very close competition (extra grip over the ai), and hard tires for endurance races (don't have to pit as much as the ai) gives me a 60 second or so jump for every extra pit stop they do. Selecting the right tire will make all the difference because you won't have to pit for fresh tires more than necessary.
