Top PS Store Downloads of 2017: GTAV and Rocket League Top All Car-Related Games

..I'm going to be brutally honest, the last place I expected my testing-the-not-MkI-Escort-through-the-crucible-of-rally-driving to end up..

..was the front page. Especially considering how many objectively better images there are to choose from. I guess that makes it all the more of an honor.

GTA V is going to hit the 100 million mark at some point. Who keeps buying it?!
Casual who aren't into the GTA Series but bought/is going to buy GTA V because of the popularity or that his friends owns one so he could play GTA Online together while spend all of their hard work money on shark cards.

That or some 10 year old kids that couldn't buy back when they were younger and the game was new.

#17 in Europe is pretty good for GT Sport considering how late in the year it was and wasn’t as cheap as in retail.

I used to be a disk & box guy 7+ years ago when I was a PC gamer. Now that I play only on both console platforms it's completely the opposite and I prefer digital versions. I only buy a physical copy when I want some of the collector's stuff in the box, this year that was Assassin's Creed Origins (Dawn of the Creed Collector's Edition), Project CARS 2 (Ultra Edition) and Gran Turismo Sport (Collector's Edition). The other probably 30+ games I bought were all digital, always for my X1X for multi-platform games but the many great Sony exclusives for my PS4 Pro.

I wish we would have more accurate info on sales, I'm really interested to see the differences between physical/digital, the different platforms or just the charts (with filters) in general.

I have it for my PS3 since ages ago and now this holiday season now that the price finally dropped to 28 EUR on the XBox store I bought it again for my X1X. :)

I'd actually be kind of shocked if it did. May to Nov. of last year was the increase of 80 to 85 million copies sold, so if it's roughly 6 months to move 5 million units, we're look at 100 million sometime in 2019.

But, RDR2 is their next big release and it's being revealed in typical GTA fashion; couple trailers and a lot of hush-hush on much of everything else. So, with anyone not interested in it & no real news of GTA VI, I guess it's more than possible it'll hit 90-95 million a year from now. They already have a few dripfeed cars and have stated it will continue to see updates, even with RDR2 coming.

Well, if you are wondering why there are no major racing games in that list, it is because they are not good enough imho. F1 2017 is supposedly the best iteration of the series, but F1 in general is less popular that it used to be. And Dirt 4, Pcars2 and GTS all had a lot of weaknesses. I wouldnt have bought neither pcars2, nor GTS myself, I only got them because I received both as gifts. Admittedly, I m having lots of fun with GTS but as for sheer quality alone, neither deserves to be on that list.

Sim racing is now a niche genre. The only racing game with a very bright future is Forza Horizon IMO. As soon as I saw the trailer for FH2, I knew it would be the new king of racing games.

Popularity of racing games are in decline and have since NFS stopped being about street racing, which was around 2007. Racing games continue to strive to be more closer to reality and in turn become more difficult and less interesting for the average person. Racing games also take more dedication and practice to be successful at than games like GTAV where the physics are over simplified to the point of not even being fun.

I'm sure the only thing GTA and Rocket League have in common with the racing genre is that some things in the game have wheels, and nothing else

I don't intend to buy any physical games anymore. I only have FIFA on disc as my PS4 was the FIFA 18 bundle.

I was wrong; Rockstar just hit 90 million units with GTA V.
One of the biggest games of the decade has hit another milestone. Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V has sped past 90 million copies sold-in to retailers and sold-through digitally worldwide. The 2013 open-world crime game has had “unparalleled longevity,” according to publisher Take-Two Interactive, due to the appeal of GTA: Online.

Take-Two confirmed in a press release that GTA V was the No. 3 best-selling game in the United States in 2017 in terms of copies, and it was No. 6 in terms of revenues, according to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group. And while Take-Two had other, newer games, like NBA 2K18 and WWE 2K18, Grand Theft Auto and its in-game digital purchases were the biggest contributors to its total revenues.

Micro-transactions are going nowhere as well.
“Our stellar results were highlighted by record recurrent consumer spending on both Grand Theft Auto Online and NBA 2K18, robust ongoing sales of Grand Theft Auto V, and the successful launch of WWE 2K18,” Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick said.

When Zelnick talks about “recurrent” spending, he means digital purchases from people who have already bought a game. This is key to Take-Two’s (and other publishers’) strategy going forward, and it is paying off at the moment. That recurrent consumer spending grew 44 percent year-over-year for Take-Two.

Multiplayer shooter, multiplayer shooter, movie property multiplayer horror (not even what I thought it'd be), a pretty game published/advertised by Sony, basically a multiplayer shooter, sport game, multiplayer sport-y game, crack for children, sport game, multiplayer shooter. Who'd honestly expect anything but the likes of GTAV to break into that list in terms of driving/racing? I don't think it's a reason to be pessimistic about the racing/sim genre or last year's titles.

As for physical vs digital, the overall trend is clear, but I expect it to bottom out sooner or later, settling upon a smaller-scale market for physical releases. If for some reason PS4 retail games went 100% digital, I wouldn't pay full price for them anymore. As it is, I only buy digital if the game is digital-only and worth it, or sometimes if it's on sale for cheap. Or if the game itself is as volatile as your purchase -- that is, multiplayer-centric and/or server-dependent. Not normally my kind of game, but The Crew 2 will probably be one.
