I'm just getting into online races, but I'm finding myself getting run over. Is it like this when your first starting out? I've been racing gr. 3 and my best laps are nowhere near the leaders. I'm qualifying a good 6 seconds behind pole and end up getting lapped no matter what I'm driving. What the hell am I doing wrong? Everyone ends up pulling away.. is it traction control? The races govern the car settings so they should be equal right?

Practice, practice, practice... it takes time. Try to work on low traction control and low ABS. Change your point of view in the car as well.
That worked for me.
Make sure you train a lot on the tracks... Practice make perfect.
You'll get there but not overnight. The top runners have been in the racing games for ages :-P

Try not to win a race in the first few corners. Often wait until the field is settled and try to work your way up by finding a good rythm

I mean its called reality, you play online and realize you were never a good driver in the first place :D What did you expect, that you will easily be on the very top or beat top 10 lap times? You have to understand there are people that only play racing games religiously and they are damn good at it. Just practice, even on youtube when watching some of the better player they don't always end up on pole position at all. Its normal.

Post a video, get some feedback.

If it was easy, we would all have the platinum trophy by now.

Starting in Gr 3 or even Gr 4 to my mind is not the best as there are cars that have advantages.

I'd start in a single make race so and as others say practice of the car and track are key. I'd also start with a relatively simple track.

Also try to ensure you get a good exit from key corners that have a long straight after them.

Review other similiar threads too for other ideas.

I think with GTS having much different physics than GT6 and new tracks to learn, it usually is tough for all new drivers and to see who is a clean driver compared to a reckless dirty one. I will be playing GTS starting Christmas night and my first thing will be the circuit experience. I will expect dirty drivers to be on track but more clean than dirty.

Are you playing the sport races or just jumping into random lobbies? If you play the sport races then you'll at least get matched mostly with other people who are just starting out. Choose one of the daily sport races but don't enter it yet. First get gold in the circuit experience for that track and then go back into the daily race and spend perhaps twenty minutes doing qualifying laps and by then you should find yourself fairly competitive with the rest of the field you get matched with.

Also, if you're in a lobby and people genuinely seem to have an advantage other than just being able to carry more speed through experience, it may be that they actually do have tuned cars.

Try a private lobby with friendly friends, choose a low powered fr on hard tires and a track you like. A few hours should get you on the track.

Have you considered starting out in Gr.4? How much time are you spending qualifying / practicing?
I spend what I thought was enough time qualifying.. 10 minutes or so, 5-10 laps..

It all depends... what is your SR and DR? I assume, since you've just started that they're both around C?

Also, do you use a controller or wheel? (wheel users are often untrustworthy and they don't bathe/shower often, btw).

Assists will generally slow you down, but I use TCS set to lvl 2 for most cars.
I'm so new I'm not sure of my rating, I'm not playing right now but i think B and E? I use a controller font have a wheel

Sport daily races. I have gold in all the other little challenges but I have not spent much time in the circuit experiences, that's a good idea.

I also tend to give too much space and be to cautious of other drivers to not be a dirty driver. Theres no skill in ramming your way.

That's... not at all what I would consider adequate time to familiarize yourself with a car/track combination. Practice more.

The actual races have less grip than the qualifying right? So you've got to be really confident in the track if you want to be competitive.

Yeah Im learning time is a virtue in this game. Disappointingly I have not been able to spend much time playing. Hopefully over the holiday break from work I can get adequate track time in.

Just stick at it. I once posted that I was regularly10 secs off the pace but not any more. I use as few assists as I can but that amounts to CSA weak, ABS weak, TCS varying from 0-2 depending on the car. Best advice I received was focus on consistency.

Pretty much all been said. Time. Give yourself leeway, use ASM, TC and ABS on default before dropping them, one by one. Even adding things back in if it makes you more consistent.
One make/gr.4 and lap in qualifying until your eyes hurt. Take a break, then do it again.
Wax on, wax off... Practice you must... Smile you sonofabitch!
Sorry, got carried away...

Watch some of the top 10 replays and see if they look anything like what you're doing. If not then that's probably what you're doing wrong.
Also watch Z28 on YouTube, he's pretty fast and posts regular race vids and helpful tips.

Fellow slow driver here. Practice is the key, the more you practice with the same car on the same track the faster you get. I joined the WRS time trial league that is on here, and boy have I improved over the last 3 plus weeks. I am no where near winning but I have better control and am more consistent when racing. Typically I am putting about 150 laps a week into each time trial, by the end of the week I am not even thinking about braking and turning, I just do it.

When the dailies were weekly I was more successful than the current format, because I was able to practice all week instead of now just jumping in and racing.
