Toyota's new president admits the automaker needs an excitement-infusion, and to that end – and in order to match the upcoming Honda CR-Z tit-for-tat – Toyota is rumored to be working on a two-door version of the Prius.

The latest reports out of Japan indicate that a shortened, 2+2 Prius-based hybrid sports coupe is under development, packing an uprated version of the 1.8-liter 2ZR-FXE four-cylinder putting out around 134 hp – 36 hp more than in its sedan counterpart. Naturally, Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive system will carry over and the additional power boost will have an adverse impact on fuel mileage – albeit a minor one.

If the Prius coupe does come to fruition, expect it to be around 100 mm shorter than the sedan, carry over the standard Prius' interior and debut sometime in mid-2012. Conveniently, there's no word on a name and whether or not the coupe will be sold in the States, but we wouldn't be surprised to find out that this would be a JDM-only affair.

Wait, what..? :odd:

That counts as exciting? Good luck to them...........

Honda has something similar planned i.e. 2 door hybrid coupe. Don't know, doesn't excite me in the least.

ok ok let see what they have in mind, but at the first look the front of the car is very similar to a Mazda...

Meh, I'm not overwhelmed. It's pretty enough, but it looks like it could have been on sale for the last 5 years. If they're planning to put that on sale in mid-2012, they'll have to change that design in some way - it looks like a frigging Solara!

*smek* You had me thinking you were serious. Damn you.

PLEASE, tell me this'll have a 2.0 Turbo and no Electricity as an option. PLEASE. If not, I hope someone comes up with a way to stuff an anti-lagged 3S-GTE in there.

. Agreed, it needs to be a proper sports car. I suppose this is FWD too? I suppose, if the FT-HS is making production (or what ever they called that Supra successor), then this will have to be FWD.

134 hp was anemic 10 years ago. The only people this car will excite are current Prius owners. This car makes as much sense as a Ferrari people-carrier.

I nominate Toyota to receive Oldsmobile award for excellence in the areas of blandness and uninspiration.

Really. What the hell happened? They've become GM of the early nineties, just without little plastichrome buttons falling off everywhere. The end result is the same: bland, uninspired cars that would look at home in the midst of a sea of beige 1994 buicks.

I can't think of a higher insult for an automaker. They're.... didactic.

You guys are getting it all wrong....

First, I'm pretty sure that "illistration" can be ignored.

Secondly, composite and alloy integration continues at its current rate I can see this being far lighter than a comparable contemporary design. And lets not forget the power off the line will be provided by the batteries which will surely be providing much more power in such a design. Sure, that sort of engine power is never going to give a good top speed but it doesn't need that for it to be fun to drive.

I hope they keep the Celica they way it is, I gotta admit its not to bad. And i'm not going to lie, the possibly new Prius isn't too bad either.

It doesn't matter what they do to the car. If it's going to have a Prius interior, people are going to be falling asleep or strangling themselves with their seatbelts.

Yes, you might be right.
And FWD is certainly not my cup of tea when it comes to anything designed to be 'sporty' or represent performance, I think you would agree.:D
But all is not lost, at least Toyota is now realizing what the problem is, although I hope they come up with a few more ideas that are a little more appealing.;)👍

Sweet!
...version of the Prius.
Aw, dammit....:indiff:

The LF-A is coming soon too, but "technically" those are all Lexuses, they want something with a Toyota badge on it making people excited (and failing so far), sort of like how GM want nothing from their companies faster than Corvette, which is why some of their cars either had a really short life or got killed before reaching production.

Toyota: give me a Celica replacement and an MR-2 replacement and I'll be happy. The former needs to look awesome and have around 200 naturally-aspirated BHP, and the latter just needs to be light, not too powerful and brilliant fun to be a success.

That is all.

This man is well learned in internet battery theory. i would not question him.

Also the IS-F has been out for a while, so Toyota already has at least one exciting car in its current line-up.

Those two are also extremely expensive when a "fun Toyota" used to be around $20k.

I like that "Celica" sketch, but its a very RWD-looking design. Its hard to top the look of the last GT-S I think. I always did want one, but the Si pretty much covers all that car would do and then some.

Point taken. What about the IS350? RWD, practical and 300 odd horsepower, pretty fun if you ask me.:D (We don't get the IS350 here in Oz :(). The Toyota Supra successor (albeit a powerful hybrid) and Celica will probably do what this Prius Coupe will fail at miserably.

It's hardly a light, fun coupe or sports car which is what Toyota really needs. You can put all the power you want into a big lumbering saloon but it's never going to be a car for regular people with regular bank balances to enjoy.

I beg to differ but what ever.

I beg to differ but what ever.

You disagree that Toyota/Lexus needs more lardy, expensive saloons with big engines when there are already plenty? And doesn't need light, fun sports cars when there aren't any in the lineup?

Here are a list of Toyota/Lexus's big, lardy saloons across different markets:
- Avensis
- Aurion
- Camry
- Presara
- Solara
- IS
- GS
- LS

And here's a list of their current affordable sports range, worldwide:
-

Oh... wait. There aren't any. There's something wrong with a manufacturer's range when the most fun one of their car offers is either an Aygo for £6k or an IS-F for over £50k. There needs to be something in between and it certainly doesn't need to be a large, RWD saloon with a sledgehammer engine. Nobody uses those to have fun anyway, they use them to cart their fat arses from business meeting to business meeting in comfort.

I guarantee that if you ask someone which models they miss from the old days at Toyota they'll say either Celica, MR2 or Supra.

No I disagreed with this part:

You can certainly make a "big lumbering saloon" as you call it very fast, very fun and very sporty, and if anything it will be cheaper than a sports car so it's even more available to the average bloke.:) (As evidenced by the M3, the sedan is cheaper than the Coupe). I'm not saying they need more of them, or that they don't need a sports coupe, I'm just saying there's nothing boring about the IS350.👍
