No doubt Subaru's version will be more hairy-chested.

Instead of being a nod towards the Corolla Levin/Trueno it's becoming more of a modern Paseo :yuck:

And the Lexus version will be way more expensive, possibly less interesting. I originally thought it going to be a new Celica or a Hachi. Hopefully Subaru will make an awesome car, like a 2-door RWD Impreza STI, that would be a good thing. If not, the whole thing will be a complete disaster, and I will just fester a hatred like I never had before.

:yuck:
Why concentrate on the 40 year old market? There are better options for the Midlife crisis crowd and this will certainly get looked over. Especially if they resort to lowering power to get more MPG's.

I thought Subaru wasn't going to make one since they only want to make AWD cars?

No problem, just buy the Subaru version instead. Y'know, like you were all going to anyway.

Last I heard this thing was going to be too expensive or something for Subaru to build, so they won't. At least that's what I thought.

This car was always too good to be true for me I think. I was wondering how they got it past anybody at Toyota to build a car that, heaven forbid, was actually fun to drive. I'm not at all surprised but I didn't see this coming.

I actually agree. The midlife crisis crowd is a tough market to please & many of these guys go for real, high name stuff, (BMW, Viper, Corvette, Carrera, etc.) than a Toyota.

Market this back down towards the Genesis 2.0T.

Gas prices haven't changed much in the past year or two, really. At least here.

Anyhow, I kind of figured this would happen to be honest. Lets just hope they do some track special (lol right) and give us something we want.

Makes me a touch sad since I do like how it looks too :(

*shrug*

I was hoping for a $20,000 coupe to keep the kids happy, driving everyone else mad, causing the presumable rush toward having an affordable coupe/roadster in almost every lineup (Nissan and Volkswagen, I'm looking at you). But, Toyota wanting to make the most money by selling the greatest number of cars... This is their own calculated move done by number-crunchers in the corporate office, and nothing else. Good luck with keeping the brand alive, Toyota.

Just as a side thought, we probably should have expected this based on the refreshed tC for 2011. Well, for the US anyway.

It would be pretty rubbish of them to dangle the carrot of an affordable and fun RWD coupe only to turn it into something sensible. Hopefully they'll see the light and keep it faithful to the concept.

Maybe they're looking at the Honda CR-Z and thinking the market wants economy over substance. Unfortunately the percentage of people who prioritise economy over everything else seems to be increasing, there are fewer people like us who just want the best economy at a particular performance point.

I don't want AWD, and I'd prefer a Toyota Badge...

Guess I'll just have to buy 25-year-old underpowered Corollas, then...

Are you guys for real? If Toyota could do something like this actually right, then I'd be surprised.

On the bright side, the car in the picture look awesome. Somebody needs to build a super light(in weight & price) sporty car, but the day Toyota becomes the first to re-release something like that, I....... I'll be happy, but mildly shocked!

Isn't the next Miata supposed to be lighter? Mazda should also pick up the Toyota concept, right where they left off, make it their own. :D

Just when hopes were rising for Toyota...

Toyota really sucks in its old age...

i find no truth in stores like this unless it comes from toyota's mouth. which to me looks like it didn't. so they increase the price, and? turning it into a solara is not the truth. Akio Toyoda said this car will be the best drifter there is. A Solara it is not. An FT-86 it is and will be released that way. I don't see any name change or product change. The design will be familiar and the weight will be low. We'll see by the end of this year.

It won't be AWD and you're alone on the second one.

I hate Toyotas these days and what they stand for, but when it comes to sports cars I'd also prefer a Toyota over a Subaru. So therefore your statement is incorrect, he's not alone.:p

the guys that originally BOUGHT toyotas are now IN the age demographic they're aiming at, which are the "Baby Busters" (the last of the baby boomers). this is probably also compensation for their supplier goof that's basically screwed their reputation.

you twenty somethings are assumed to not be able to afford the new ones anyway, and I'm still trying to figure out what automotive demographic is aimed at us gen exers.

Add my name to that list either. Even less interested in Subarus than I am in Toyotas.

Unless maybe if it was an SVX converted to 6spd manual...... But generally speaking my original statement stands.

I actually think Toyota made a smart move there.

One, IMO it would be dumb if they made an exact copy of the Subaru version. Since Subaru has the the younger, sportier image, give them the higher performance version.

Two, many buyers nowadays look at the mpg on the window sticker before they look at horsepower, torque, 1/4 mile times, etc. Perhaps it will help them recoup some of their losses.

Although maybe they could try to do what Ford did with the V6 Mustang, and get both impressive power and impressive mpg. Another solution is to create the low power gas sipper, and then create a "hi-po" version.

All this coming from someone who would never dream of owning either a Toyota or a Subaru, past or present.

Good lord. The number one car I was looking forward to after all these years may be slowly morphing into another Camry. I’ll still probably end up buying it though... really depending on the body design.

My backup plan, the new RX7 they are developing. Supposedly.

Substituting Fail with older Fail.

Yay!

Old cheap fail is less fail than new expensive fail.

He can take his lesser fail and use the money of the greater fail and make an even lesser fail.

I think. :ouch:

Easy, the same class of car as the Kia Rio.
