So I'm trying to transfer data between an old PS3 and a new PS3, and having a ball ache of a time doing so.

Apparently my problem lies with a corrupt file I cannot see on my old PS3, and as such the transfer keeps failing when trying to shift this file.

According to the internet I need to format the PS3 to get rid of it, but first I need to back up my data.

It's all taking far too long though, even though I'm down to just 15gb of data, GT5 is taking up 12 of that and would be jolly nice if I can remove it from the equation.

Here's where things get technical/anal/nail biting…

I've bought every single car I wanted to own in GT5 in the order it will go in my garage, so would like to keep that order. But this includes a lot of dlc cars as well as some one time only cars such as GT Academy prizes, as well as one off prize tickets and overalls.

Can I just delete the utility data, redownload everything on the new PS3, reinstall the savedata and find everything where I left it?

Or is transferring the utility data the only way I can keep my garage order and GT Academy cars?

Any help is much appreciated!

So long as you add the same PSN account where you have made your GT5 purchases you can do that yes, you will have to rebuild your thumbnail database which will take a while but not too long.

The garage contents is saved in your game save, not in the game data. You should be able to recreate your PSN on the new PS3, then install the game, install all updates, install all DLC you have purchased, and then copy over your game save.

Did you "de-activate" your old PS3 first? You need to do that in order to use the "transfer" utility!

You should be able to plug the both PS3's together with a LAN/Ethernet cable and run the transfer utility. That's the only way to transfer your "Game Data" (not save data).

It's not the only way. You can also do a backup & restore if you have a USB drive with enough space on it.

Bro,

So you are saying it is possible to move an account to another PS3 with just a flash drive?

Ok, so I am clear on what I would like to do...

I have an 3 accounts with on my machine that I use GT5 on. I would like to transfer one of those to another machine and basically let stay there.. giving it to a friend.
So to do this I just need to give up the account name (email) and password? it should fire up on a new machine... update that new machine and dlc then transfer over the saved file from the flash drive? is that right?

No, not just a single account. It's for making the new PS3's data the same as the old PS3's data. The USB drive you use has to be big enough to hold all of the data on your PS3's hard drive. It's basically the same as using the transfer utility, only instead of having the 2 PS3's linked together you're using an external USB drive for the transfer instead.

If you want to move just 1 single account and not everything on the PS3, you're limited to manually reinstalling the game data and creating the PS3 account on the new PS3.

But you could always do the full backup & restore to make the new PS3's data the same as the old PS3's and then just delete the PS3 user profiles/accounts and game datas that you're not going to use.
