Is it possible to tune the brakes on your car?

I can't find it in the tuning shop?

I heard its only available on certain cars. This is 100% hearsay though as I don't have my copy quite yet.

Seems you can't buy any brake parts. This is crazy, why would they skip such a feature?

You can only change the braking balance in the garage->tuning

Brake upgrade should have been easy to implement.. I wonder why they left it out.

No, wrong attitude. If they did not implement it, it is not of any use... period.

I'm joking, of course, this game has a lot of flaws, a lot, but pointing them out here is like saying "Hrmm... why doesn't my new computer have a Blu-Ray drive?" in a Mac forum :D

i refuse to believe that nobody at Sony / PD reads these forums.

not reading fansites is completely stupid in todays worlds. especially when theres barely no community functions (e.g. a GOOD forum) on gran-turismo.com...

Other game company does it.

But yes, ive also noticed a lack of brakes in the tuning shop. and its a disappointment. Cant chance standard brakes to carbon... QQ!

What I mean is that pointing out obvious flaws, like the lack of optional, brakes to the die-hard fans around here will only spawn comments like "Oh, but brakes are only for looks, I know this because I have once seen a car in a picture" or "Brakes don't really matter, you should be happy there are wheels on the car" and such things. What is not in the game it not important. Strange attitude.

Regarding brake tuning; there is a brake balance setting in the "Settings" menu, but no tuning parts to be bought. PD simply left it out, at least as far as I can see.

This is so strange????? Brakes are a MASSIVE part of tuning when it comes to going fast. Its dangerous to make your car faster without upgrading the brakes. Surely it will be included in the game at some point? This has to be one of the biggest question marks so far.........

I agree! I love the game so far, but it is definitely not without its flaws and this is kind of a major one. Perhaps it gets unlocked later? Who knows...

I'm at level 7

I have a feeling they wanted to make brake upgrades be visible on the car like exhaust. Then they found limitation with wheel sizes... like I've said many times they should make a compact brake upgrade kit for 15-16" standard wheels (they have these in real life), a intermediate one for 17" wheels (brembo F40 type size) and large brakes for 18"+ wheels.

Of course they don't let you change wheel size/width so this can't happen as it stands. I really hope they get their act together and either forget about visually putting the brakes on the car (like in past GT's) or implement a wheel size choice and brake fitting requirements like above. This would only work on premiums, so they could leave them invisible on standards or piss people off and leave standards with no brake upgrade options :p

The other theory is that they've played around with the brake physics so much that they've realised most people have enough trouble controlling their braking with normal brakes and bigger ones would only make it harder. I hope this isn't the case as it basically means a fail on their development of physics.

Just a general note, I have two cars around the same weight and power (FC RX-7 and FT-86 concept) both on sports soft tyres. The FT86 should brake a lot better not only because it has bigger brakes but it is also a bit lighter... well the difference isn't really there IMO. The RX-7 has half decent brakes standard unlike other cars from the era (S13 for example) but as someone who's come from similar 'decent' brakes to 4-pot brembos I can tell you the difference should definitely be noticeable!

And I don't understand why every car gets a brake controller. I don't recall a MKI GTI having a brake controller, thats pretty trick stuff.

yesterday I played around with the brake controller. On my '98 civic hatch (1st car) i increased front brake power and decreased it on the rear and so far, I have notived a decent improvement in braking power. Also, I have the feeling that the overall brake power increases while upgrading your hp. Could this be true?

the first couple of things you do to upgrade your car is buying
exhaust
air filter
BRAKE kit

where is the brake upgrade kit?

i just cant believe its not there.

Big omission not having brake upgrades. Its a simple and common real life upgrade, it should be in GT5.

Bigger/better brakes help with feel, and fade when repeatedly doing big stops, where a 'standard' road car set-up might start to boil the fluid, overheat the pads, etc. However, regardless of the brakes, the thing that is generating the force that stops the car is the tyres. With the same tyres on, (assuming in the game your sports soft tyres are identical in every respect) you will only be able to generate the same, maximum force to slow the vehicle, so of course the brakes will seem the same, because the feel and fade aspects aren't discernible in the game.

Lots of further info here: http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/tech_white_papers.shtml

Yesterday I played around with the brake-controller. On my '98 Civic (1st car ^^) I increased the brake power and decreased it on the rear. So far, I feel a decent improvement in overall braking power. I also think that the brake power improves according to you increasing engine-power. What do you think? It like magic :) But still this whole break-tuning-issue is really weird. Its like almost they forgot to include the brakes tuning section at all.

Updating brakes is even in the APEX guide as far as I know - so I assume it will be patched. If it isn't, it's pretty damn absurd.

They ran out of screen space in the parts shop main menu :p.

Until PD implement brake fade into the game then there is no benefit to upgrading the disks, the balance controler is all we need. As long as you can lock your wheels with your current setup (provided ABS is off ofcourse) then different brakes will not make you stop any faster. They will fade less and disperse heat better etc, but since theses are not simulated in GT5 (at least not yet) then there would be no benefit to having these other than in your mind you might think they're better.

There are 2 entire pages on upgrading your brakes in the Apex book so I can't imagine they wont add the feature soon.

So for now in order to improve stopping we just increase the controller from 5:5 to 7:7 or 7:6 for a mildly tuned car?

This is one of the first things i noticed. and i don't understand how you can leave out braking upgrades...even PADS. its one of the first things you touch on a car when racing in real life if you are on a budget.

i hope they add this as a free upgrade or something...someone dropped the ball!

Tuning in general in GT5 is trash. So simplified, lacks lots of stuff that was in GT4, can't save setups either, also can't practice at an event to get the setup right.

Wow - and I thought that GT4 was simple enough.
I guess the tuning options in general are turned down to get to the younger audence. I just wish there was a choice. And you can't practice?! 👎 Amazing disappointment.

The level of braking should be still based on the real car's braking capability in real life

That means improving the brakes will do improve it but again the level of braking capabilities still differ based on the real car's braking capability

Otherwise you can tune and improve your cars brake

Guess we gotta tune our cars the hard way and study them and make basic setups for tracks.

Then again this is the real driving simulation

This is no GT4 / -

You can't just say or demand stuff without thinking deeply in terms of simulation.

The car's braking style/ everything should be the way it is

When you improve or upgrade the brakes

It will still be based on the real cars brakes but improved

So there's the simulation of reality

You can't make a generic statement like that, you need to know the car you started with. (e.g. does it start with understeer or oversteer while braking or none at all, does it lock the wheels, etc. etc.) The settings you mention may work for some cars, but not for others. Since we only have brake balance, this works in more or less the same way as GT5P. The only way to know what works is to try. :)
