Tuning; how much is too much?

I have a great job. I'm making more money than my mom at age 19. And, I get three day weekends. Three day weekends, on which I can do small jobs, here-and-there. Brakes/suspension one weekend, tires another, etc., until my car is exactly as I plan. However, there's also the option of renting a car (like my dad and I are doing on Monday, since the Impreza's getting window tint.)

But, McLaren, since you choose to get involved, again, yes, my family has three cars. And my dad and I work together. So, I can carpool in the Accent, OR take my dad to work in my Impy.
Funny how things can change, and just when you think you've got things sorted, life can always bite you in the bum.

I still feel really bad for missing Madrid, but, things are happening at home. In short, and, yet again, my mom and I might be leaving my dad.

However, this time, I'd be paying a lot more bills... at the age of 19.

POW! Right in the finances.

It's good to have grand visions for your vehicle, but you always need to be realistic with your expectations.

Thing is, I can likely still afford all of the things I want to do to my car, and the stuff I need to cover.

Is this your job?

So, you're going against what the other people are saying, too, by saying that I shouldn't have a daily driver, and a separate racing/show car? So, there really isn't a verdict here, at all, is there? The idea behind keeping the auto would be a reliable daily driver...

I'm all for a daily driver. Either a cheaper car that's better on gas, like... shudder... an Accent, or an old pickup to tow your track car, as needed.

Rusty old shell projects hardly ever get finished.

Tell me about it. I bought an old Beetle with the idea of restoring it. Two years later, aside from stripping the interior and cleaning up the floor, it still looks basically the same as the day I got it.

It takes time and an almost monomaniacal focus to do it, I suppose.

That's another reason I'm not in favor of having two Scoobs. Splitting your time and modding money between the two would detract from your focus. Better the daily is as untempting as can be in regards to mod potential.

Of course, it can be done. I know people with several of the same car. But it's an unnecessary distraction.

I'm kinda lucky that my Civic was more or less "done" at the time I bought my MR2. I haven't had to decide which car to put money in.

Is what my job? All i was doing was pointing out that things don't always go the way you expect them to.

👍

Almost 10 years ago I bought a BMW 635. 9,5 years ago I moved out of my parents house. I have so far driven 4,9 kilometers in my BMW.

Things indeed don't always go as you expect or plan.

About 7 years ago I laid down some cash on a 1970 Coronet project car and told the owner I'd be back by afternoon with the rest of the money; the car was gone, he had been offered almost twice as much by other guy.

Three months later I got engaged, married soon afterwards, and since then I haven't been able to afford a car, let alone playing with a project car. Just in time, but yeah, stuff usually doesn't work like you'd like to.

I tried reading what I missed since I posted on the first page. By the time I got to page 4 I had no hair left to pull out so I skipped to the end. I don't know how you guys have this level of patience. This guy has the maturity and intellect of a 13 year old and clearly isn't willing to take any advice or help from people who are trying to provide it (over and over again.) Well I'm glad I didn't waste much time here.

And they were the best 4.9kms of your life? 👍

No, :(

The only brakes on the car at that time was that lever between the seats, so I had to drive careful.

Edit.

I did have a testdrive in the car before I bought it, and before I knew the brakes were pretty much gone. :D

That's exactly how (almost) everyone spends a sudden burst of cash at 19yo. Greatly tuning a car is no exception.

The Handbrake!

I'm just curious how do you do that. Like woudnt you spin out n stuff?

You just engine brake and then slowly feed in the handbrake when you're less than 5/10mph.

Handbrakes in real life are not like handbrakes in computer games! So long as you pull it gradually it shouldn't go locking the rears, it's only when you give it a really good yank that you might risk that...

edit: Dennisch is lucky enought to have a 635 with a Manual, so at least he can engine brake! I had to spend £600 getting calipers sorted out before I could take mine anywhere!

You'll break the cable when you yank it. Even new ones. And if you are having a bad day, the brakes will lock at the same time!

I've driven a few cars with stock suspension, that got out of shape (unsettled,) though.

And  about the chiropractor's thing.

Anything can get out of shape in any situation. A caddy is gonna be out of shape taking a turn fast, and a slammed and "stanced" civic is going to be out of shape over any road rougher than a 12 year olds face. That being said, there's nothing saying that caddy won't fall out of shape on a smooth road and what not. A mid corner bump can screw over just about any corner attempt with bad consequences based on speed. I've had the back end of my dads mustang step out on me going a measely 35 mph and catching a sharp bump in there. Yet I've taken that same turn in my F150, my moms Escape(s), a MK V Rabbit, MK VI GTI, and my motorcycle all at the same speed and they handled it perfectly.

And I'd love to know where the money to fund your projects come from man. I'm a 20 year old college student, and money is always an issue. I have 3 jobs, 2 vehicles, live at home, and have to save every bit I can to make my next tuition payment and books, let alone modify stuff. My most expensive mods on the truck have cost me $100, and those are few and far between. The bike is on a shoe string budget as well, just staying OEM and reliable. I have $180 to my name, and that's only because it was paid to me when my truck got rear ended.

Life sucks, don't expect you can handle all the money here. I thought I'd have a big ole lift and tires, and a beautiful bike. I have neither, and there's no plans for it anytime soon

💡 You own a truck. That must be a lot of money on petrol. I mean, what else would it be?

3 jobs is a lot...

That's why I have a bike. My 15mpg F150 was killing me at over 100 bucks a week in gas. I've had the bike running properly for the past 5 months, spending about $40 a week on gas thank god. The truck just sits. It's got 31" M/Ts, a 2.5 inch lift, 15x10 wheels and custom made clear lens headlights by yours truly (Aftermarket doesn't have any stock alternatives). That's the extent of the mods that cost money really. I put a sound system in it, and I've painted a lot of things on that truck. I paid $200 for the truck and have had to do simple maintenence for the past 3 years/42k miles.

The bike I've raised from the basically dead into a reliable DD with about 400 dollars and countless hours of cursing, but it works now. I've got $1100 in the bike including purchase.

Then we go into school. $900 last semester, $1500 this semester plus books I haven't paid or looked at yet. Plus $50 a month for insurance on the truck, $80 a year on the bike, and another $13 a month for texting and TV in my room.

Basically, as soon as you think you have the money to do something, keep saving and just watch as life gets in the way. I've had the cash to put a 6 inch lift on the truck for a total of 8" of lift and then throw 37s under it and regear it, but like always, the money disappeared not long after I was going to do all the work, and it's a damn good thing I didn't spend it on the truck because I would have been screwed to say the least

And, you think that's bad? I pay $42 a month for texting, and a few other things.... Are much more expensive here.

But, if you can have $13/month texting, three jobs, and problems with money... Mate, look into different work, maybe.

I think you're missing my point here. Did you see the whole tuition bit up there? Just because my monthly bills are only ~$65 in total doesn't mean I can afford big project vehicles. I think you're missing the concept of a dollar and how hard they are to make, save, and use properly. Being 19 or 20 and putting all your money into a project vehicle is a money losing, quality of life degrading proposition.

Build it slowly. The best kind of project is a running, driving, reliable, everyday vehicle. That way you can still have your fun, while getting to work and any other places you need to be. The last thing you want to be doing is tracking your DD, and breaking things you can't fix at a moments notice. Parts stores aren't always open when you need them, and parts aren't always in stock.

I've been in that position. I've had both my vehicles out of comission at one time. It was only for 2 days, but it's not something I'd want to ever deal with again.

Did I just read this correctly?
Mustang posts that he has to maintain 2 vehicles, 3 jobs, & school w/ various other fees & you reply, "And, you think that's bad?" because you have a $42 phone bill & other things?

I can tell right now life is going to knock you on your ass hard when you're no longer with mom & dad. Mustang is a prime example of someone putting himself through school & work on his own dime, a trait rarely see in today's society. It's an extremely difficult feat to accomplish over the course of 4 years in college & I commend him on it. 👍

I shudder to think how you'll face paying for a home, car, insurance, phone, amongst several others bills that come into play once you're on your own. It adds up ridiculously fast.

You really do have zero concept of money don't you?

That's not fair Joey. Maybe he counts his expenses in increments of $42?

You've got to be kidding me. Did you even take the time to actually read his post? If you did and you're actually serious about what you wrote here, then like McLaren said, you're in for a very rude awakening.

Every two weeks, $600 goes into a savings account, for saving money.

Then, I'm left with approximately $400, with which I can tune, pay my bills, and (in the case of this month,) buy presents. I'm planning to replace the catalytic convertor soon; $800 worth. So, I have to save for a bit. Well, another pay check's worth of time.

So, you're basically making around $2,000/month. I doubt that's anywhere enough to live on your own comfortably and have track car money.
