If you use manual shift on the tighter tracks you can get away with a stage 3 turbo. As long as you keep your rpms above 5,000 rpms or so. Then from there is just a matter of battling wheel spin.
I know the S13 240SX I tuned for a friend lost about 50 lb-ft of torque from the high-RPM turbo for 20hp or so more peak power and wound up far faster with the mid-range turbo (which gave the highest torque).

Ultimately, the way you tune your car depends on how you drive. And yes, a mid-range turbo will greatly improve torque compared to horsepower. How does the torque compare on a stage 3 turbo'd S13 to a non-turbo'd S13. All that the different stage turbos affect is amount of psi increase inside of each cylinder. The turbo needs exhaust air to begin spooling. So, bigger turbo requires more exhaust air to effectively provide more intake air.
