Is it humiliating?
Maybe not, but Ronaldo's behaviour and subsequent comments after the match were churlish and embarrassing and turned what was merely a disappointing (yet acceptable) result for Portugal into something that no self-respecting fan of the player or the nation should be proud of.

I think there's a problem with football generally (which also helps to add to the negative stereotype), there's always 'another club' for these players to sign for.
I wholeheartedly concur.

The fact that these players can do something utterly appalling that cheapens the entire industry, but can carry on working in the industry somewhere else because they're good at it only adds to the perception that people have of the game.

It's rare for a player to get a world wide ban
Only Ronnie Wallwork springs to mind - and that was reduced to a 2 year suspended ban, with a 12 month ban in Belgium.

Oddly, he was sent to prison in 2011 for handling stolen cars.

So who do you support / go to watch?

Firstly, I think you're treating this way too seriously, I'm not trying to belittle your country in any way (hell, Scotland aren't even at the championships. ) but I was referring to Cristiano's comments about Iceland having a small nation mentality. All I was pointing out was it would be funny/ironic if Iceland somehow made it further than Portugal after those comments made in matchday 1.

FWIW, I think Portugal will beat Poland, I was merely theorizing for the sake of a little bit of banter.

I know, but some people do that to try to diminish other and usually for no reason.

And of course I take this too seriously. When someone or some entity offends you or your country in a completely blind and biased way, it pisses me off. Specially journalists that see a game blind folded, look at the stats and highlights and say "X team played bad" or "X player sucks".

Are you even reading things now, or just making up arguments in your head and pretending that's what's been said?

I wrote that, before seeing what you said. So no, I'm not just making arguments on my head.

It was humiliating enough for Ronaldo to moan and whine about the opposition afterwards.

Iceland played defensively and there's no denying in that, and didn't play to win either, just wanted to stop Portugal from scoring, and were happy with a draw. Now, when you play anti-football the whole game, yes there will be complaints.
It's frustrating to play against a team that doesn't want to play the game. Do I agree entirely with what he said post game? No. Does he have a point on what he said? Yes. They played for the draw and that was it. They didn't do a pretty game, lots of unnecessary fouls and wasting time the whole game. They got lucky with the only real mistake we made in the game and scored, and then quit attacking and were happy with the result.

Not shaking hands with them wasn't pretty, sure, but it isn't pretty either making a party after drawing, specially when the only thing they did was playing defensive the whole game. Talking about sportsmanship after a game like that makes no sense, since their own game doesn't favor sportsmanship at all.

@dacc10 Your argument about 'anti-football' might have made more sense had the game finished 0-0, but since Iceland fought back to tie the game after going behind it makes no sense at all. In any case it is a matter of opinion. But even if Iceland 'played to not lose', that is not bad sportsmanship - forgive me, but I think you are taking the term 'sportsmanship' too literally, since in English it implies a deliberate mean-spiritedness. In the opening game of a major tournament, every team in the tournament would have gone into the match with the same idea - don't lose. That is not 'unsporting' - it's common sense.

What Ronaldo did by bleating so publicly about his own teams' inability to win was unsportsmanlike enough, but his refusal to shake hands with his opponents is the very definition of unsporting behaviour - and that is not a matter of opinion.

If Poland will win Euro I going to register new religion called Pazdanism.
I backed Poland from the start of the tournament and I'm really hoping they pull through. However, with the ever hot-and-cold Milik and Lewandowski's current form I'm worried they won't be able to see Portugal off.

This, and with the small matter of having one of the most lethal forward players on the opposite team, it's no wonder Iceland set their stool out the way they did... they celebrated the way they did because they got a foothold to work from, and so it proved. A team like San Marino, for example... with all due respect, that is the very definition of a team that doesn't play to win.

Still they attacked once or twice. After scoring the goal they went back to their gaming style. Playing purely defensive against a stronger team is not anti-football. Anti-football is the amount of fouls made and the amount of time you waste during the whole game. For some reason people complain about Atlético de Madrid's play style. Ugly game most of the time, too many fouls. It isn't in favor of the sport neither the spectacle that football was supposed to be.

Yes, it was an unsporting behaviour, but it was a reaction moved by frustration and in response to the unsporting way Iceland played and then celebrated the ugly game they did without even winning. My problem is not with them playing defensive, it's the way they did it. That's all.

On another note, I'm not in favor of players faking injuries and so on. I'm in favor of real football for the spectacle it is. Now, people shouldn't act like said players are the reason football is what it is today, with the dives, etc. That exists for years now, 15 or more years. That's implemented in football for a long time and every single player/team takes advantage of that. Hell, even English players were diving in this Euro... It's a shame, but to change this there needs to be a major overall in the entities who rule this sport. Let's not blame on a few players the state of football when legends such as Maradona or Henry did it first (goals with their hands...), and I'm sure a lot others did it before.

Quarter finals start tomorrow

Thursday
Poland v Portugal

Friday
Wales v Belgium

Saturday
Germany v Italy

Sunday
France v Iceland

All games are 8pm KO, missing the Germany-Italy game because of work.

I wonder who will be our opponents in our first friendly after this Euro's, rumour has it the FA are speaking to the cast of the Deadliest Catch as we were outclassed by the last lot of fisherman we faced.

:D

Interested to see how that Germany-Italy will be. I have a feeling Italy will pass, they are being very effective, and Germany doesn't look as strong as it was in the world cup.

I think Germany are the best in the tournament. Italy to win though, as usual Buffon will put in a heroic performance and I'm not sure if Gomez will be of much use against Italy's centre backs.

Wimmer is good enough to start for the other 19 teams in the Premiership, he can do a job for Spurs.

Ashley Williams is fit for the game after a shoulder injury in the NI last 16 game when he collided with Jonny Williams, he played through the injury demanding that he was fine, also Wales wont train on the Lille pitch, it was ripped up and a new one was laid before the Germany-Slovakia game.

Was the minute of silence for Istanbul? I thought they weren't going to do that because of dumb UEFA logic?

Also.

GO POLAND!

Nani isn't the star or talent he used to be. At least not on this tournament.
