The electric car = TG stupidity. That's why it made me laugh a lot! Especially once they had to make the roof bigger for Hammond, then you just saw his head sticking out the top! :D

You're a season behind, mate. :p

I loved the electric car bit. One of the funniest episodes for me, honestly. :)

What? That is the new episodes! and it's not on this week! Doctor Who is on next week.

The Aston bit was the end of Season 13. Season 14 just started, and we're on episode 2.

;)

The Top Gear starts on the 101 channel on DirecTV tonight. Actually, I think it already did. But there's a repeat episode at 9PM PCT.

Might I ask for permission to post yet another collection of great Top Gear moments? This time it's May and his beloved Dacia Sandero:

Volkswagen is a good shout I think and perhaps Mercedes-Benz

Or neither. Neither Merc nor VW has produced a solid line of truly great ones, merely flashes of brilliance in a sea of "okay" stuff. For every half decent Merc or VW I can find you a dud.

Re: The vids posted above, if I wasn't being quiet to let my flatmate sleep, I'd be laughing loudly at all of those. May banging his head on the camera not long after Hammond had done the same thing was a particularly good moment

Hm.. So what is the Sandero when it's badged as a Renault? I saw a little Renault hatchback in the parking lot of my apartment, I wonder if that's what it is.. lol. It was odd to begin with, because Renault hasn't sold a car here in the States since I was a kid, not sure where it came from.

I'd say Jaguar has a good proportion of good cars versus bad. Whether its the greatest because it has a smaller ratio is opinion of course.

I see that you live in Texas, so the car probably came from Mexico. I've seen a few Peugeot's here in Alabama and they all have Mexico plates on them.

^I once saw a Ford Ka from Mexico.

Anyway, my nominations:

Ford
Taurus
Ka
Mustang
Pretty much every fast Ford ever (exclude Gen-1 Focus RS).

Mercedes-Benz
300SL
S-Klasse
190E 2.5 16
CLS-Klasse

Nissan/Datsun
240Z
Skyline GT-R R32
Z32 300ZX
GTR

In reality, I think Ford probably has done the most signicant cars of any company I know (I think I've missed some French and Italian companies), including the too-often-cited Model T. They have two fairly independent and huge sections (Ford America, ford Europe) and both have produced some important and lovely cars. The Taurus was the first mass-market aerodynamic car for America, and was unusually sporty; the Ka is great to drive and extremely clever (reminds me of the old Mini); the Mustang is superpopular, deserved or not; and the 'Fast Fords' part goes without saying.

Mercedes is very advanced and, excluding the 90's, a very characterful company. Their 300SL was mad; the S-Klasse is always from the future (see: Top Gear); the quick 190E is a longer M3 with more interesting backstory; the CLS is unbelievably gorgeous. And, all the old, superdignified sedans don't hurt either.

Nissan is definitely more Japanese in philosophy (Simplify and add buttons?), but they still accidentally produce something epic every once in a while. I admit, my Altima biases me towards this choice, but let me explain myself. The 240Z brought beauty to the masses, the R32 GT-R slaughtered everything while retaining rather a lot of character; the admittedly unpopular Z32 300ZX prompts inquiries of (That a Lambo?); the new, handbuilt GTR resumes the tradition of slaughtering mercilessly. I don't personally think the S13 Silvia is a properly great car, but it has enough status to be worthy of mention.

Yup, you're right. I took a closer look at it this morning, and it's got Mexico plates. Probably visiting family for the long weekend.

The trouble with this is argueing that these are manufacturers who've made an overwhelming proportion of great cars compared to an overwhelming proportion of awful ones. For every Mustang or Focus RS there's a Pinto or Mk4 Escort, for every 190 Cosworth or CLS there's a Vaneo or C180, and for every 240Z and GT-R there's a Micra and a Serena.

Personally, I'll be interested as to what Top Gear choose because it's not as easy as it sounds picking a manufacturer who has made the most truly great cars.

I'd say porsche or ferrari would be the most obvious ones.

Well it depends on whether we are deciding based on good/bad ratio or purely on number of great cars. It also depends on whether we take age into account, for example, you could say McLaren have a 100% ratio, but do they really count? They've been a manufacturer far less than Ford.
Do we take into account different divisions? Does Ford Europe's contributions count as Ford or seperately?
Do we take into account the range of cars a manufacturer produces? The larger manufacturers are more likely to have bad cars if they are having to create new cars for several different markets and price ranges compared to a sports car manufacturer who makes the same cars for the same market all the time.

I can't decide, there are so many variables to consider, its like trying to work out who is the definitive greatest F1 driver of all time.

All I can decide is that Ford, Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini must be near the top whichever way you look at it. So I won't be surprised to see one of those 4 nominated. I can only justify those 4 based purely on the fact they have fairly consistently produced at least 1 good car each decade.

Hmm...I wouldn't agree with Lamborghini out of those if I'm perfectly honest. I love Lambo's but the Countach, Diablo and many of the others were never great cars, well atleast according to TopGear anyway. TG described them as perfect poster cars, looked great but never drove like you secretly wanted them too.

I'm going to go with Ford in my opinion. Think of all the fast Fords, then some of the modern Fords which have recieved praise from TG. Such as the new Mondeo, even the old Mondeo, I think the Fiesta got a pretty positive review too. Thats my thoughts anyway.

Heh, but then are we are taking into account a car's greatness as a whole or specific parts? I could easily argue that the Countach is a great car based on looks alone.

Ford have the most varied range of good cars that are good for different reasons so I'm guessing they will win.

I'm sure they already dismissed Ferrari in last week's episode. I'm thinking the more likely nominees will be lowish-volume or small range manufacturers who consistantly produce excellent cars. Porsche could well be up there as could Lamborghini, and I'm also thinking Lotus (the modern Europa is the only "average" car I can think of since the 80s, that's pretty good going). Also, maybe Mazda? Apart from the late 90s/early 00s (and even then, they've had the MX5 to redeem themselves) they've had a pretty good track record.

What a stupid episode, I was actually bored watching it. Top Gear has really gone down hill this season. It started off so good but these past two episodes have been immensely lame.

I really do hope it gets better towards the end of the season.
