In a bold marketing move, PD released “update 2.0” as a means to re-inspire GT5 fans at a critical time; the release of Forza 4. I must admit, the timing was rather effective. I got bored with the 200 premium cars GT5 had to offer, and let my nephew permanently borrow my copy of GT5 about 6 months ago. I enjoy the immersion that cockpit view provides, so when I saw the announcement that standard cars in GT5 are all getting cockpit views, accompanied by the following screenshot, I immediately forgot about Forza, and spent the money I had saved on another copy of GT5. I admit, after seeing the news that all standard cars will have “simplified” cockpits, I didn’t really perform the usual Google image searches; I just rushed out and bought it. Boy, was I surprised…

Like I said before, I love the enhanced immersion that cockpits provide. Because of this, I only ever raced with premium cars. I was very grateful to PD for adding cockpit views to standard cars. As a disclaimer, PD clearly states that the cockpit views for standard cars are “simplified.” This is completely understandable; after all, PD has only been working on GT5 for 9 years. I am willing to cut them some slack on the quality of the standard car cockpits. I will say that the quality of the finished product really indicates the level of devotion that PD has for its fans. Take, for example, one of my personal favorites: the Chevrolet Camaro SS ’00. I was thrilled to hear that my favorite car will now have a cockpit. I took some screenshots of the dash and gages to compare them to their real life counterparts. Let’s see how they did.

Here is a real-life shot of the Camaro shifter and a console:

As you can see, it’s not quite as nice as a premium cockpit component, but PD clearly states that it is “simplified,” so all’s well.

I think the quality of the new cockpits will serve to reinforce the public’s current image of PD, and really show GT5 fans just how PD values their patronage. Seeing as how PD releases games and content on a timetable that meets or exceeds customer’s expectations, I’m sure it will be only a matter of 2 or 3 years before we see the next groundbreaking GT5 updates, probably around the release of Forza 5. I have devoted some of my personal time to create an updated version of the ’00 Camaro cockpit, and I would be honored if PD would include it in their next upgrade. It is quite a simple rendition, but personally, I feel that it is a slight improvement over the recently released 2.0 cockpits. After creating it, I can personally attest to just how much time and effort PD must have put into their versions.

I truly look forward to your comments, unless it's "You should have read further down..."

Copied from the other thread: If you actually read their full article, then you'd understand that only the open top cars were getting detailed cockpits, and the closed top were getting shadows. But yes I agree it's disappointing.

I do like the way you explained how upset you are regarding the simplified cockpit very entertaining

It's a little late for such tame sarcasm isn't it?

I appologise if I read your post wrong but what I said was not sarcasm I actually enjoyed the post

You do know that first "real-life" picture is from a 2010 Camaro, and not a 2000 model like the rest of your pictures, right? You actually could find that view in the game.

I want to reply to 2 things you said close together.

PD has only been working on GT5 for 9 years.

I love when people try to exaggerate like this to prove their point. All it does it cause me to take you less seriously.

I will say the quality of the finished product really indicates the level of devotion PD has for its fans.
I know you are being sarcastic, but I actually think it does in a way. The views aren't ideal, in any way, but fans like you were screaming for a cockpit view, even similar to the view in GTPSP for all cars in GT5. Once he saw how big of a deal it was for a large enough part of the fan base they went to work on it. Obviously they couldn't create a detailed cockpit for 800 cars in just months so they did the next best thing. You can complain about it all you want but they tried to help out you and all the people who refuse to play from any view but cockpit.

Either the cockpits are perfectly modelled like in premium cars, or simplified like in standard cars (black). What other options would there even be? Something from Test Drive?

I'm perfectly happy with the standard cockpits considering the cars themselves couldn't be any worse.

Seriously? I am curious how you know the OP was "screaming" for cockpit views, even similar to GTPSP? Did I miss that somewhere?

Lots of sim racers refuse to drive in wonder woman, invisible, vehicle view. You say it like its a bad thing. When a game is marketed as the Real Driving Simulator, its hard not to expect realistic view, and not an arcade view.

Did I say specifically that he was screaming for it? To me, fans like you, means fans who wanted cockpit view. I didn't state that he specifically asked for anything, maybe poor wording. IDK. I do think you aren't looking at the context of the entire statement though.

Again, maybe I didn't word it the way I meant to but I never said it's a bad thing. I was trying to say KY tried to help those people out by giving them a basic cockpit and thus adding 800 cars for them to use in game.

To me, though, the 'wonder woman, invisible' view is much closer to how I feel when driving a real car then the limited, half the car is cut away view of single screen cockpit view. And I agree it's not too much to expect a cockpit view for all cars. It's pretty obvious that detailed cockpits were never going to happen for every car in the game though. It seems like KY incorrectly assumed people would prefer no cockpit for some cars over the simplified view. When he saw the reaction he decided to make a quick fix. And in my opinion the blacked out view is better than a generic cockpit or cockpits with some but limited detail.

I would be perfectly happy with the blacked out cockpit view if it were at least like the PSP GT blacked out in-car view. The diference being that at least on PSP the nose and door panel outside of your window are visible and where they should be. With the GT5 version, the body of the car is somehow magically invisible.

If you could just see the car it would be fine.

I like (and always use) the standard's blacked out cockpits but there is one thing that really bothers me.

You can't see your car's hood! Try a Nissan 240 Z, an E-Type or a muscle car...it feels like driving with a black paper in front of your head, not like actually sitting in a car.

They did it better in GT PSP and that's annoying.

[edit] Check @ Larry! :)

Yes. I don't mind black cockpits too but I absolutely hate that the hood can't be seen with them.

To be completely honest, and no longer sarcastic, after all the venting and disappointment, I am glad for the simplified cockpits. It does help with the immersion a little. I must admit, mcfizzle, your argument is a good one. I am appreciative that something is being done to address complaints. I deleted my game save and I am running through the game a third time, and I have more standard cars in my garage than ever before. Believe it or not, the first two times I restarted, the only standard car I would keep was the Formula GT; all of the others got deleted immediately. I also completely agree that seeing the hood in front of the silhouette would be much better. "Black paper in front of your head..." lol, exactly

Honestly Topsu, I think a low quality image like that, if it were car specific, would be better than a black silhouette. Where on earth did you find that image, lol.

Something about the black silhouettes has actually left me little hopeful; it seems that the simplified cockpits are specifically modeled for each individual car, instead of the same silhouette for every car. All that would be left is to paste a bitmap, or whatever the equivalent for GT5 is, over the black spot. Because of the level of detail of the silhouette outline for each car, I kind of suspect, and profoundly hope, that this was the plan, but they didn't finish, and had to roll it out now regardless. If they simply added a low-res bitmap, I would be extremely appreciative.

Thanks for taking my post so well, I expected worse. I hope that in some convoluted way my post can be interpreted as an attempt to further motivate PD; we don’t want them getting complacent in their glory, do we?

You're getting me weepy with nostalgia...I got Test Drive III on Christmas Day 1990 when I was 14 (along with TV Sports: Basketball)...The Test Drive series was considered cutting-edge for its time:tup::)

It's like, how much more black could the cockpit view of a Chevrolet Camaro SS ’00 be? The answer is none. None more black.
I definitely appreciate PD adding standard cockpits and drive them way more now, but OP had me cracking up...

Well, everybody knew that it would be the black molding. Dunno why you're expecting more.

BTW, I agree with others, the only thing that bugs me is the fact you can't see the car exterior, hood, etc, like it was on GTPSP:

As I posted sometimes, in this video, the fact that you can actually see the hood and scoop makes you really feel like you're driving a scooby.

Ignorance is a bless, I suppose.

Those black mask cockpits were added because fans were asking for them.

Me too, i've already tweeted to Kaz asking about this (to at least see the hoods from the blacked cockpit), never got an answer of course...

Well, we almost never got an answer about wheels for standards and we're getting it.

Expressing our voice is important. I asked the same for Kaz too!

Fans asked for REAL cockpits (at least like the open cockpit cars), not these horrible "black mask"... :yuck: Absolutely outrageous for the usual GT quality standard....

No sir, we asked for the GTPSP black cockpit because its easier and quicker to make.

Real cockpits for the whole 800 cars would take too much time right now.

This thread is amusing. You people have absolutely no idea how many man hours go into properly rendering a single cockpit, especially one on a vehicle that was build over a decade ago. The game was worth it's purchase price the day it came out. It gave you 1,000 cars to race and 200 that had full cockpits. It gave you numerous tracks and configurations, and hours of game play (not including online play). The 2.0 update gives you additional features at no cost, and all you can do is complain about it. How about you fork over another $60 for a different game. That will give you a few dozen more cockpits to oogle over and more tracks to race.
