I have done a complete backup of my PS3 then taken the 120gig hdd out bought a new sealed 360gig hdd and put it into PS3.
Switch unit on and it tells me.

Connect the controller using usb cable, and then press the PS button.
Done that.

It now says.

The system software cannot be run correctly. Press the ps button to try to restart the system.
If the system cannot be restarted, the system partition of the hard disk must be reformatted and you must reinstall the system software.
Connect storage media that contains that contains update data of version 3.65 or later. and then press the start and select buttons at the same timee.
For information on how to obtain update data, refer to the SCE Web site for your region.

Done that and all i get is this

No applicable update was found.
Connect storage media that contains update data of version 3.65 or later. then press the START and SELECT buttons together at the same time.

Its now running me round in this circle. Have i buggered it up ? I dont have a clue what to do now.

Any help will be much appreciated.

google for the restore hdd.
You need to hold the power button on the ps3 down for ... till it beeps two times i think, then a menu will come up, restoring every thing to factory setting including the hdd.
try that if you didn't

Did you download the update data to a Flash drive? It didn't work for me the first time and I found that I had to create a folder called PS3 with a subfolder titled UPDATE and put it in this. After that it worked.

Did you put the 'PS3UPDAT.PUP' file in a folder titled 'UPDATE' inside another folder titled 'PS3' on the USB flash drive?

EDIT: Bah, tree'd!

They mean you can't just put the update file on the usb drive. You have to create a folder on the usb drive named "PS3", inside that folder you have to create another folder named "UPDATE", inside that folder you put the file you downloaded "PS3UPDAT.PUP".

I havent even downloaded this file all ive done is update the ps3 to 3.65 via the sony update link on the XMB. How to move these around i dont have a clue where to look and cant now as the old drive isnt in no more.

Playstation.com has an icon in the lower right corner to download the update from. Your update is stored on the HDD therefore it is no longer on your system. Just go to Playstation.com to download it onto a flash drive.

Just going thru the process of formating the hdd now. Hope this will be right, and thank you guys for the help its very much appreciated.

Go to account management on the XMB and choose activate system. All of your prior PSN downloads and rights information will then be allowed.
