Using a VPN give you sometype of advantage

What is the apparent advantage of using VPN? I cannot imagine what it might be.

There's no reason why something that always makes your connection slower (higher latency, more lag) would be advantageous when playing online. The point is to jump through additional hoops to hide your real IP address and appear to be from a different location, not to be a cheat device. If anything it is almost always a disadvantage for you to game with VPN on. Having accidentally left mine on before jumping online in certain PC games, my impression was that I lagged more than if I had joined a server on the other side of the Atlantic, which usually nets me 130-140 ping (in other words, terrible).

Ask them exactly what they mean by "cheaters" and how it enables someone to "cheat" by using a VPN.
 
People do this in Call of Duty Warzone all the time, especially streamers. They use this to make sbmm not as punishing by connecting to servers in different regions.

This is how most of them get those 50 kill youtube videos because they are 4-6 kd players going up against people who can barely get a 1 kd.

The thing when you make a online lobby we like to race with 700 pp and most of the time everbody has the US flag but those that have the Brazil Australia or canada flag there always Frist place you cant beat them.

That’s not a VPN anyone from any region can join online lobbies. That’s just a get good moment as they are better drivers 😂

Online lobbies don't use a server, it's peer to peer (not that using a VPN to connect to a more local server would make your car go faster).

Someone's having a laugh at your expense. They were just faster.

A VPN wouldn't help there, you get put into a regions races depending on where you told them you were when you setup the PSN account.
 
In most scenarios a VPN will only reduce your network quality. But in some cases it is possible to improve your latency and connection. Some Internet Service Providers (ISP) have poor routing in which your network traffic has to go through multiple routes before reaching the server, sometimes a VPN can provide better traffic routing, resulting in better latency.

For example: You are located 1km from the games data centre / server - it is possible that your ISP routes your traffic through multiple locations before reaching the data server and results in your data packet having to travel much greater than 1km before it reaches the server. This is poor network routing by your ISP.

With a VPN, your network gets redirected through the VPN server and then routed to the games data centre/server. It is POSSIBLE that even with the extra stop, it can provide a better routing path to the game server. But this is not usually expected from a VPN.

It's BS... I've tested it directly, and as many others here have mentioned, VPN adds latency/lag and makes your racing quality very poor.

The reason your friends THINK it improves the connection is because of the mountain of BS advertising that the Gaming VPN's promote about themselves i.e. They tell you how awesome they are.

BUT compared to what??!?! Their words are cleverly wrapped behind an overall idea that "everyone uses a VPN" and then proceed on that basis to compare themselves to the cheapest/free VPNs that are not designed with gaming intentions.
In summary: if you are presently using a crap/free VPN whilst racing in Sport mode, then upgrading to a dedicated Gaming VPN would be an improvement. But getting rid of the VPN completely will improve your experience much more.

There are many videos on YouTube about how to get a Nat2 connection (or Nat1 if your ISP allows), and this is definitely the optimum way to play Sport mode in Gran Turismo.



Also just as important is to use a hardwire internet connection to your PlayStation i.e. NOT wireless/wifi. This is one of those situations when a good old-fashon Cat5 cable is better. A lot better.

And if you're playing GT7 over a mobile device, or public/shared internet connection, then better stick to single player mode because your sport/lobby experience will be massively frustrating (for you and everyone else).

There are also more detailed settings (static IP, port forwarding, firewalls etc) but the above-mentioned basic hardwire Nat2 are the most important. Any VPN creates an impediment.

You can use the PlayStation browser to run Ping Test. Be sure to use a site that graphs the ping results because the occasional huge lag is what you want to reduce, in addition to the overall average ping. Depending on your country, chose a ping test to where the associated PD server is (Europe/Japan/USA)

Edit: I'll attempt to rate these connection types out of 10, in relation to optimum for Gran Turismo, so you can decide how to proceed. (assuming you have a good home internet connection available and reasonable distance to the PD server)

1/10 - Free porn VPN over public wifi (300-400 ms)
2/10 - Gaming VPN over public wifi (250-350 ms)
3/10 - Gaming VPN over home wifi (200-280 ms)
...
5/10 - Nat 3 connection over home wifi (50-180 ms)
6/10 - Nat 2 connection over home wifi (30-160 ms)
...
8/10 - Nat 2 connection over home ethernet (20-60ms)
9/10 - Nat 2 connection over home ethernet with dedicated IP addresses and port forwarding for Gran Turismo (10-40 ms)
10/10 - Nat1 ISP provided IP (5-20 ms) assumed

I have to play with a VPN cause I live in China. And believe me, there's no advantage to use one. It often lags, and I still have to play on European servers.
 
you dont have to use a VPN to play in another region, you literally just state your home region with no VPN and its let you play in any region you want.
