Get Carfax, people. It's worth every penny. Failed its emissions test? Registered as a corporate lease vehicle in Nevada? What a joke. Interesting though - Carfax got the engine wrong on that car. It's a '96, and that engine didn't debut until 1997 - and even then, the code was LS56, not LS57. Makes me question their accuracy a bit.

Nah - Carfax is definitely wrong. There's a million ways it's wrong - the VIN is a turbo VIN, not a GLT Turbo VIN, I've seen under the hood, the rear says "Turbo," it's a '96 not a '97... must just be mis-reported information or something.

It's a possibility - a lot of Golf-platform Volkswagens were built there, including all Corrados. Check VINs on the ones you're looking at - 3 means Mexico, which is a slight step up over 9, Brazil. I don't think any except R32s will carry a W VIN, which is Germany.

Boy - there's a pretty clear odometer rollback. It's definitely no clerical error - that vehicle was actually pushing 200,000km when it got its emissions test in January 2002, even though it only showed 74,000km.

This is interesting - I almost feel like finding some VINs on AutoTrader just to check some random cars out!

8/28 it was shipped to a dealer, and 9/8 the title was issued. I don't think this vehicle was sitting on the lot more than a couple of days before someone bought it. Maybe two. Average auto industry turnaround time is a month or two, for some brands (*cough* Mitsubishi, Isuzu *cough*) it's more than four.
