Well,
Saab ain't dead yet. Remember, they're doing this right now:
Just, uh, you know... Without any of the cool bits. Like, XWD. Or BioPower. But, they're back! In Sweden! And China! They plan on going electric, which is probably a smart move, but I'd doubt that we'd see Saab back in the US or much of Europe any time soon, and that's a damn shame.
Volvo on the other hand, you've gotta remember that they're swimming in Geely's money right now. As much as Geely said that they bought the car and would keep it independent, I'm sure that they're a little worried about them constantly losing market share, and increasingly making little to no money at all. So, Volvo has to be a bit more daring, and try to get back to making emotional vehicles - something that they really haven't done before. More than anything, they need to differentiate themselves from the other entry-level luxury cars, or, carve out their own niche - which is what I assume they're doing now.
My guess is that, given Geely's money, and their new design direction, they're going to try to straddle give/take the same line that they've towed for the past two decades or so. Be the brand that you move up to from Volkswagen or Subaru, but don't exactly go toe-to-toe with Audi and BMW if you don't have to. But when they build cars like the drop-dead-gorgeous V60, I think they're winning the hearts of internet car geeks. They just need to find a way to build a car for us poor folks to afford.
