The best 6 cylinder engine is the AJP6 imo, it's far more reliable than it's repuation that actually stems from the AJP8 which is a very different engine to the AJP6. The AJP6 is capable of astonishing performance, it sounds simply incredible and it's quite light. There are more reliable engines out there sure, I wouldn't say there arn't, but as I said it's far more reliable than it's given credit for. And despite that there's no other engine that combines the aural pleasure and the weight with the performance and potential the engine has, the 4 liter versions capable of prodcuing 500bhp reliably without any forced induction.

The water and air-cooled versions (from 914/6 to Cayman via 911/964/993/996/997 and even 959/961 and 956/962) are all very, very similar - the heads being the main difference, certainly as similar as a generic 'small block Chevy' and just as similar as a 'Rover V8' is to a 'TVR V8' if you catch my drift.

But not a TVR AJP8 just to avoid confusion TVR used a highly modified Rover V8 on two models in the 80's and early 90's then they built an inhouse engine called the AJP8 which was also a V8 but not Rover V8 based and after that they built the AJP6 which was an inline 6 engine. I'm not saying this as a fact but I'm sure I've read somewher that Porsche have used different blocks over the years for their flat 6s.

After a quick Wiki, it would appear that the Air-Cooled and Water-Cooled flat-6 blocks were different. But from 993 back, they have been essentially the same block. I know the TVR/Rover V8 is a different beast to the AJP8 but i would say that the block from the TVR 'Rover' V8's (350/400/420/Griffith/Tuscan racer/Chimera) is as different to a BL/Rover V8 as a early 911 is to the one found in the 962 racer, let alone the 993.

AMC's 4.0 ran from 1964 to 2006! That sure is a testament to the soundness of the design!

I agree with that. The S54 from the E46 M3, M Roadster, M Coupe, Z4 M, and Z4 M Coupe. Great power, great efficiency, decent mileage for its output, sounded great. It basically MADE the M3 what it was. Love that car, and the engine.

Voted Honda B-series: most influential of the lot, that's for sure. Not the best engineered (Ford/Lotus Twincam, BMW M10 beat it), but the B-series is the one with the most sway in the industry...at least, among the ones listed.
