The best 6 cylinder engine is the AJP6 imo, it's far more reliable than it's repuation that actually stems from the AJP8 which is a very different engine to the AJP6. The AJP6 is capable of astonishing performance, it sounds simply incredible and it's quite light. There are more reliable engines out there sure, I wouldn't say there arn't, but as I said it's far more reliable than it's given credit for. And despite that there's no other engine that combines the aural pleasure and the weight with the performance and potential the engine has, the 4 liter versions capable of prodcuing 500bhp reliably without any forced induction.
Porsche Flat 6 - powering the "Worlds Best Car" (as voted by GTP) for over 40 years and still going strong![]()
I'll divide that into Air-cooled and Water-cooled versions, since that covers quite a few motors. and, don't forget the Cayman and Boxter's mills, and I think the 914 had a six available, too.
The water and air-cooled versions (from 914/6 to Cayman via 911/964/993/996/997 and even 959/961 and 956/962) are all very, very similar - the heads being the main difference, certainly as similar as a generic 'small block Chevy' and just as similar as a 'Rover V8' is to a 'TVR V8' if you catch my drift.
AMC's 4.0 ran from 1964 to 2006! That sure is a testament to the soundness of the design!I'll nominate the 300 c.i. (4.9 L) inline-6 made by Ford and the 4.0 L straight 6 made by Jeep/AMC. Both motors have a near bulletproof reliability record and were once widely used.
I presume your skipping lesser used engines like 5 cylinder engines.
MatttheTunerNew Chrysler Phoenix 3 to 3.6 Liter and it will replace all OHV and DOHC engines!
Its between the 911 motor, the M3 and the R34.
I'll suppose, then, that you're nominating the BMW S50B30 (E36) and S54B32 (E46) engines?
Sorry about the VAG motor thing...I guess form hereon out, they'll all be VAG, unless they're pre-VAG, or exclusive to one make.
Thats ok and yep im nominating the M3 motor, but only the E46 version. Actually I nominate the M3 CSL motor.![]()
