Was this incident my fault?

Basically I was racing in fourth having been behind third for the whole race (six laps). Coming up to a very tight turn, the guy in third braked about 50 metres earlier than he had on any other lap on a very tight turn. Now because he caught me off guard I had two options;

A) Break and hope that I don't hit him.

B) Dive down the inside and hope that I don't take him out or vice-versa.

I went for option B and as started breaking into the corner, he turned in (again quite early it seemed) and I proceeded to take him and myself out of the race. Of course he sent me loads of abuse about how I should of held off and it was my fault BUT was it his ridiculously early breaking the cause or did I make the wrong choice?

Without a video it is really hard to say.

Option C: Take the outside line.

Try not to get caught off guard. :)

B. Lewis Hamilton style... because there aren't any race stewards in GT5

edit: Oh i see your from Nottingham so you deserve abuse regardless :sly:

Not possible to judge based on your description.

@ OP

Which track was it? It sounds like Fuji Speedway at the chicane, via Dunlop.

Haha sorry, i went to see Paul Simon in nottingham last night and it's actually a lot nicer than Leicester! Just as long as you don't support that red football team whose name I won't utter

A general rule is that it's your responsibility to avoid the car in front of you. Period.

With that said, it's not against the rules to go inside and if he turned into you on purpose, then it's not your fault. If you stole the entire race track because you were going too fast though, it's your fault.

Nottingham has Robin Hood, so it get's extra awesome points.

Without a replay it's not really proper to say what you did was right/wrong or anything else but if the other guy braked early then he really has no one but himself to blame if someone hits him since it is not expected behaviour on a race track.

Looks like felipe wasn't looking in his mirrors...or was he?

@EliteDriver Quite right! The other driver took to the outside where I was, braked early. I decided to go on the inside and they dived across.

@Iamsupernasty I braked where I normally would, but I entered the turn from a different line.

Difficult to judge without a replay vid, but it IS the following drivers responsibility to avoid contact regardless of early braking. That said, if the other driver knew you were there, that's poor sportsmanship to intentionally early brake without any warning (provided he hadn't been doing it previous laps). But it sounds to me like the contact fault lies with you, though unintentional. That happens sometimes in racing, all you can do is apologize and move on.

maybe its cos your from nottingham, init

Kinda lloks like you are on fault, but not intended for sure. It was your responsibility to avoid all contact as you are the follower, and you were assuming, and that is a big No No even in driving in general.

Like others said, we really need a replay or at least a picture to instance what happened. It also depends on the corner, how hard he braked, etc.

Well, in this incident, the person in front has right of way. They can break early if they want. And if you were to follow the GTP Online Rules, the answer would be...

C. Break and turn away so you don't come into any contact. Take an outside line or run off the track.

But with 50m early braking, you should have been able to see that and break early too.

Can know one use there imagination?? As you said before, there was no room for an outside line, was that because their was a wall there?

Edge of the track, grass with no TC on. Probably would spin and possibly take him or the car behind out anyway.

Hmmm, It seems like instinct to me.from what i have read, i would have done the same thing. If he brakes early, then you have a chance to overtake by outbraking him, but im guessing, this was just to avoid him.
If it was me, i would be sending him abuses for braking too early, but it is also your responsibility to be stay frosty and look out for that.

Yes all those Nottingham lads are like that LOL.

OP its only a game dont let them upset you, if youve managed to complete nearly 6 laps out of a 6 lap event without any problems that in itself should show your a clean driver, end of the day he braked early, for whatever reason only he will know so take it as his mistake.

LEWIS get over it mate

seriously:

  • to win first you need to finish
  • racing or driving isn't about going for a drive, it's about driving to a plan.. plan the overtakes.
  • it's your responsibility to overtake cleanly.
  • it's everyones responsibility to avoid an accident. (hate that mentality of your going to pass me eventually so I'll take you out!)

there are two sides to every story, without a replay it's hard to say, however You were approaching a very tight turn, I'd have expected the other driver if he was paying any attention to know that you were there and to try and cover any possible overtake manoeuvre, this doesn't allow them to brake test you, but I would expect them to cover the racing line!

interestingly you only thought you had two options..

option one: brake and try not to hit him.(if your both going at the same pace similar speeds/cars, why would you not be able to stop in more or less the same space?) - you can still steer when braking, change the line for a better exit and take him on the way out...

option two: Dive down the inside and hope!!
the last word sums it up.. hope!

given you know he's defending the position he's going to try and block the run up the inside just where you hoped he wouldn't go.. most drivers will cover the inside line. (shorter distance) so you failed to plan the overtake! and account for what could possibly happen.

Hopefully if he's reading this, and recognises the event. He'll reflect on it as well. When you rely on hope your leaving it to chance, and theres a chance that no one will win. like wise if your on/or going past your limit and the guy behind you is still way faster.. why risk a crash and going out of the race.. let him past and learn from him.

the old adage is true, to win first you have to finish. I agree with the comment earlier, if your overtaking it's your responsibility to do so cleanly.

and if you make a mess of it, put your hand up and apologise and take it on the chin.. were all human.

it's good to discuss these things but don't beat yourself up over it. it's the next corner that matters, learn but don't dwell on the mistake on the last one!

safe racing ..

When we race other people, we have to have a little trust that they know what they are doing. If you are racing someone for awhile you tend to get an idea of how they drive. If after 5 or 6 laps this person brakes 50m shorter than normal it's their fault if you hit them. In my mind it's no different than if they brake checked you.(which is what he probably did btw)

I don't watch any other Mmtorsport besides F1.
If this was in F1, the driver in front would be penalised because he didn't leave you enough room.
But as this is GT5 and a lot of people don't race fairly online, it's a racing incident!

For example, if you were racing and after 4 laps the person you were racing braked 50m shorter than normal i doubt you would blame yourself for the accident. In this game their is no reason for the lead car to brake that early. That means he did it on purpose. That makes it the lead cars fault. Sometimes you can't avoid accidents, that's why they are called accidents.

@gslooney

Surprised it took so long for someone to bring it up but the early brake seems like a blessing in disguise - good chance to overtake the lead car.

Although, I wasn't in the race and I don't know all the details so I'm not going to say the OP should've have done this or that.

Just remember that 90% the guys that get super agro or rage-quit are dorks and probably will never move out of their parents house, so don't let it get to you.

It didn't get to me. Just wanted to learn from my mistakes. If it was a driving error by me I wouldn't want to make it again if you know what I mean?

totally understand.

my point is - the guy probably woulda got super-upset if you passed him and didn't touch him anyway. In other words, I honestly don't think you could learn much from this because whether he was wrong or you were, people like this guy usually can't see pat their own opinion anyway.
