My client recently asked HP for a testing sample of a desktop PC that they would be willing to sell us in moderate numbers (c100 per order) for around £300.

They sent us a xw6600 workstation.

Dual Xeon motherboard (one fitted)
HP 146GB 15k SAS HDD
nVidia Quadro FX4700 graphics card
16GB RAM

There seems little point in even switching it on. How are we supposed to run performance tests against a machine so clearly unrelated to what we'd be actually buying?

Wow, y'know, i think i should get in touch with HP. I may have to order some!

So how much do these cost per unit then? How many multiples of the £300 you stated?!!

Maybe you should have asked for a PC instead of a Mondeo. You've obviously confused them...

If it is the FX 4700 X2, then it is equivalent to a dual GPU 9800 GX2. The FX 3700 is roughly a single 8800 GT.

4700 X2. :)

A quick runthrough the HP US store shows that it's $5,395. And that's based on the cheapest Xeon processor, since we couldn't tell. It's a fairly serious piece of kit, with a huge processor heatsink/fan combo, memory cooler, northbridge cooler, the lot.

I said I'd take the £300 in cash out of the downstairs cash machine in exchange for it.
