Why on earth can't PD get A.I correct? Put your swords down please. I've been waiting on this game for the past five years. I've met every single video/photo/demo with extreme enthusiasm and awe. GT for me has always been the only single reason to own a Playstation, all other titles have just been there to keep me busy till the next GT release comes. GT is like madden to me, I'll buy it no matter what because some of the key components that it has really are just that worth it. I won't settle with any other title, GT is the only GT out there. A different game with better A.I would just be that, a different game.

Now that that's out of the way. I know I'm not the only one who has been waiting to see the divine revelation of the new A.I for GT5. I know I'm not the only one that took Prologue for a drive, and stopped the car just to see if other vehicles would notice that I was actually an element in the world to contend with. I know I'm not the only one to notice that there doesn't appear to be a significant jump in the A.I as there has been for say the lighting, polygon count, graphics, sounds, camera shake, etc. All of those things have been done beautifully well.

What do you think the reasons behind this are? I have to say one of the main reasons GT isn't enjoyable is because of the way the single player is setup. Often, you have to beat 1 boosted car, which always wins. I don't find that challenging in the least bit. Its more of a Top Gear challenge than an actual race where opponents will make mistakes, where they wont always spin out on the same turn at the same moment, where they wont always pit on the second to last lap. The way you win in GT is to make an overpowered car that beats that 1 car. Which is why I just really do hotlaps, I'm not a fan of career modes in games with online, because no matter what, good clean online racers provide challenges that A.I simply can't reproduce. So most of this is complaining about a feature that I'd hardly invest all of my emotions into.

The A.I from all of the current builds we've watched for the past 5 years have all shown the same exact oblivious A.I. Sure, we can pretend its because the driver made a mistake. And I think i've even convinced myself to see deep into the internet to make a case for it. Nothing has been shown by the builds to put any of those fears at ease. There has been no clear cut case of A.I recognizing the player vehicle, no more so than prologue(which I think may have at least had them slow down compared to GT4, can anyone back that up?) has. Sure we've just seen demo's. Sure. But I find it very illusory to think its all just going to change instantly. Lets say the A.I in GT is doing some super Japanese PS3 Cell Math, thats great, but as a user, I don't see any of it. Its all resulting in the same experience that was there before. Which is one of the reasons I haven't finished a GT since GT2. The series is still my most played, and its the best sim out on consoles. The A.I is just such a let down. I know if it was at least on par with other console games, it would make the career mode a bit more interesting for me personally. I can go without it though, as I have for the past 10 years.

For the most part, much like damage, the only time to complain about the A.I is when you're screwing up. But I find passing does illustrate the problem, and thats a normal part of racing. I'm hoping that it all just magically changes at release. With news of an entire division dedicated to A.I, I can only hope that some how... its hard to get A.I truncated for demo's, but knowing what other titles have shown in demo's, I can't imagine it takes up an entire bluray disc. I don't think its too much to question, considering the unquestionable quality that GT has seemed to be able to pull off with the series. Good A.I or improved A.I would definitely be instantly obvious, and you know full well it would be GTP headline news.

Game is not out, also in GT world for AI to work, you really have to drive as a real life race car driver, over take a car at a time, and Over take in reasonable areas. In real life you really have to respect race line. You really have to be consistent with that line, not slaming breaks too much will result the driver in rear will slam you, or passing on a tight corner.. so many aspects will end up in accidents even with PROS.
Also look online.. most people say AI sucks, yet they are the ones to SPIN out with other 5 drivers on the first corner..
Maybe people need to adjust their styles as it was real life? 💡

Besides , sure its not PERFECT, but its really decent.. besides if AI was perfect, I would never win a race. Because on average I am always 3 seconds slower then top drivers.

Someone had to say it? This has been on forums since past GT games..

i am with you but game still in development. of course PD looking these forums for feedback..Dont worry this generation has good relationship with PSN updates..They can change and add everything in the game.Kazunori said we may be able to add DAMAGE to GT5 prologue.. if they add damage with update. they can solve every problem in their games.I m not happy about A.I too..It was railway in every GT game probably it changed in GT4 a bit.
Gt5 has HUGE SCALE game..are you bored single player ? ok come get some online competition.
Finally +1 your idea about A.I it could change thanks to update.it is not impossible really

This is the generic pedestrian response I believe i covered by addressing it already.

People sucking have little to do with just stopping and observing a vehicle doesn't even know you're on the track.

The ring video it's a shame, AI sucks. Ai don't consider you on the track, they are racing alone on the racing line, it's just a long train of car without brain.

^^^ I completely disagree.

But I don't mind the AI in Prologue either, so maybe it's just me. I guess I can race clean enough with them to know their behavior and work my way through them without any problems. Including spinning out and doing a 360 right in front of a whole pack of them, and not one of them hit me.

While I do think Prologue has slightly improved A.I from previous examples, I'd say thats a rare case of doing a 360 without getting hit by an oblivious A.I. The A.I seems to at least slow in Prologue, but it never reacts like any PC sim/other console sims. I don't think its the stark difference that we see with all other facets of the game. Nothing in the series has screamed significantly improved A.I.

I would be lying if I said GT's A.I wouldn't be improved if it noticed you were driving on the course, and I'd be lying to say I can't see room for improvement that gets it on par with other sims right now.

And I really don't think its a question of skill.

I 'm hoping that the fact there is now damage should mean that the AI is keener to avoid incidents. It will also make us all learn to drive properly all the time.

I never really enjoyed racing AI, in any game, it just feels fake to me.

Im glad GT5 is focussing more on internet play. real people, more realism!

If you like bumper cars then yes ;)

I think that the biggest problem is bashing your car by AI cars without any sort of evade/breaing attempt.

Does this mean the AI put in exactly the same lap times each time?

The AI in Shift are awful, they will get you back if you hit them which is ok but unlike GT they cannot race against each other without causing a huge pileup on almost every corner of the first lap-also some drivers just try and spin you for no reason at all.

They've got the Datalogger technology, maybe they should collect race data and use that for the A.I.
I don't know what they can possibly to not make the cars smash right into you. GT's A.I is by far the worst but thats not saying a lot since the A.I in most racing games are pretty bad.

But you're you absolutely right, if they can update the physics, graphics, sounds why not the A.I?

Hey, blademask, I'm with you on this. Lot of people on GTplanet can't hear the truth and are mad of anger when you say it. Although I can complain all the day about things PD is omitting in the graphics on the hunt for perfect car models, AI is the worst problem of all and stayed yet further behind than other aspects.

AI drivers don't even compete in the same physics like you are, they compete maybe in even simpler than standard mode. As a result they are widely incompatible with what you are doing as a fast driver. When you are fighting the last bit of the traction, they just stomp on the gas and when you are finally accelerating after tough corner, they hit the brake exactly into your acceleration which is often ending with colission you don't want. That's not fun anymore, that's some sad theatre.

This is in fact the last game I'm ever playing because I'm a car nut, no other gaming at all, life is just short for that. I used to overlook that but I'm almost 32 now, have some real driving experience with FR cars, they call it real driving simulator and I just don't want to play this childish game, hunt the boosted car again and get slammed every time I come across that ideal driving line.

Then why are you? All you do is complain, so why don't you just give up now?

So what I've got from this thread is

1) The AI is about as good as racing online
2) People are still complaining about this

Why doesn't PD just hire you already? Apparently you know exactly how to fix the problem, so what are they farting around for?

Because there's nothing better for car enthusiast. I'm in contact with these imperfections and they are annoying me because I'm playing Prologue daily. And when I can see latest GT5 demos and watch PD is thinking that too little polygons for a car is the biggest GT problem, it makes me a little bit sick.

Well, I don't want to be as rude as you are. I said online racing provides a challenge that A.I will never provide. Provided, you race with people who share the same respect for online racing that you do, which is what Private rooms will bring.

I know you just think "yet another person complaining" but if you spent less time throwing fellow GTP members under the bus, and more time reading a comment, you would see that I'm completely in love with the series. Pointing out that we still haven't seen the jump in A.I from the previous GT series doesn't make it an invalid discussion as to why it doesn't really change.

Am I a programmer? No. Do I need to be to say that I can load a simulation, park a car, and see it being avoided by other A.I? No. Its absurd to try and make a claim that you have to be a A.I Developer to comment on it, especially in the world with other examples of lesser games working just fine.
I guess you have to be an engineer to comment about the way a vehicle handles then as well.

Im not a GT apologist, love the game. The A.I thing is a bit disappointing. It will have no affect on my enjoyment of the series, as I prefer hotlaps and online, but its just mind blowing to believe that PD hasn't tweaked the system to react to players. Which is why I brought it up for discussion. Its either a big joke, and we will see a more current gen type of A.I at the final release, or PD just has no desire to make A.I see theres a player car on the road. In any case, its not like complaining about Skid marks. A.I is a factor in the career mode. If you want to pretend its not a problem, thats fine. But don't try to play me off as some troll with an issue that isn't a basic function in other simulations. You always have the option to not respond to a post.

I don't get how anyone could compare racing a computer to a real person. Even my mom said "..that is just cool." when she saw me racing online for the first time. Even a mid 50's woman can appreciate racing real people, yet you guys still whine about AI.

Serious question, because I see the GT defense brigade has already started marching.

Is asking for the A.I vehicle to notice you're on the track really defined as whining? In 10 years, am I really whining here?

At least you could have the same equal respect for the people that would like to see A.I improvements as the same people who cried about damage/cockpits/sounds. At the base of it, its not a very tall order, seeing as how its done in simulations out even before GT was born. Some people don't have a choice of racing online, and unless they are part of a community they will be racing morons most of the time.

I think that Gran Turismo reveals its true nature if you try to see it in the eyes Kazunori Yamauchi sees it in. It's his baby, therefore he pushes its development, willingly or not, into the direction that it works perfectly the way he likes to use it. And since Kaz usually doesn't do anything but drive properly and quickly in the game, that's when it works best. As soon as you stray off that path however, things stop working perfectly.

As for criticism, one does have a hard stand here. In my opinion however, it must be valid to spell out truths and bring up thoughts without being dismissed.

You needn't be a music composer to hear a false tone, mate. Fanboys want us at least to apologize for discussing. On a discussion forum?

So, what is wrong with the AI in the latest video? The fact that the guy driving took a terrible line, tried to attempt a terrible pass, at speeds that were too high. Then he tried to crowd the AI's line, and the AI did not relenquish his position. What's wrong with that? I mean really? Do you really think that in real life racing you would get away with **** like that? You're wrong. The AI was fine, and performed BEAUTIFULLY in that latest video. Anyone who complains is delusional and believes that in real life someone is just going to get out of your way when you try and make a terrible pass, and crowd their line. 👎 You all fail.

Thats what I have no choice but to believe. I don't think for one second its because PD doesn't have the technical ability, just the desire isn't there. And you're right for the most part. I do feel that all of that could stay fully intact with A.I noticing you're on the track, and would offer at least 1 extra facet of gameplay to factor in while racing. As it stands now? There are still PS1 era games that had A.I that would be aware of the player's vehicle.

I don't think that its the golden design to where the user is creating the flaw, as most are trying to portray. Because again, GT isn't known for being the standard in car simulation. We can all agree that PC simulations, are better at simulating A.I, and other physics. That is the base of which the game is created, and in that sense, GT fails to meet those simulation expectations.

Its nice to suggest that KY is this great mind(which he is), but I can't imagine that his Utopian vision of driving competitively includes other vehicles that are oblivious to your presence in the game world. That I just can't sign off on.

Whining was a strong word, but this has been brought up several times, and in numerous threads.

Concerning the other features people were vocal about:
Sound- can only be improved, it can not be replaced.
Cockpits- "
Damage- "

AI can be replaced with humans. And I am not saying it shouldn't be improved, but starting threads on a demo's lackluster AI is a little over the top in my eyes.
