Why on earth can't PD get A.I correct? Put your swords down please. I've been waiting on this game for the past five years. I've met every single video/photo/demo with extreme enthusiasm and awe. GT for me has always been the only single reason to own a Playstation, all other titles have just been there to keep me busy till the next GT release comes. GT is like madden to me, I'll buy it no matter what because some of the key components that it has really are just that worth it. I won't settle with any other title, GT is the only GT out there. A different game with better A.I would just be that, a different game.
Now that that's out of the way. I know I'm not the only one who has been waiting to see the divine revelation of the new A.I for GT5. I know I'm not the only one that took Prologue for a drive, and stopped the car just to see if other vehicles would notice that I was actually an element in the world to contend with. I know I'm not the only one to notice that there doesn't appear to be a significant jump in the A.I as there has been for say the lighting, polygon count, graphics, sounds, camera shake, etc. All of those things have been done beautifully well.
What do you think the reasons behind this are? I have to say one of the main reasons GT isn't enjoyable is because of the way the single player is setup. Often, you have to beat 1 boosted car, which always wins. I don't find that challenging in the least bit. Its more of a Top Gear challenge than an actual race where opponents will make mistakes, where they wont always spin out on the same turn at the same moment, where they wont always pit on the second to last lap. The way you win in GT is to make an overpowered car that beats that 1 car. Which is why I just really do hotlaps, I'm not a fan of career modes in games with online, because no matter what, good clean online racers provide challenges that A.I simply can't reproduce. So most of this is complaining about a feature that I'd hardly invest all of my emotions into.
The A.I from all of the current builds we've watched for the past 5 years have all shown the same exact oblivious A.I. Sure, we can pretend its because the driver made a mistake. And I think i've even convinced myself to see deep into the internet to make a case for it. Nothing has been shown by the builds to put any of those fears at ease. There has been no clear cut case of A.I recognizing the player vehicle, no more so than prologue(which I think may have at least had them slow down compared to GT4, can anyone back that up?) has. Sure we've just seen demo's. Sure. But I find it very illusory to think its all just going to change instantly. Lets say the A.I in GT is doing some super Japanese PS3 Cell Math, thats great, but as a user, I don't see any of it. Its all resulting in the same experience that was there before. Which is one of the reasons I haven't finished a GT since GT2. The series is still my most played, and its the best sim out on consoles. The A.I is just such a let down. I know if it was at least on par with other console games, it would make the career mode a bit more interesting for me personally. I can go without it though, as I have for the past 10 years.
For the most part, much like damage, the only time to complain about the A.I is when you're screwing up. But I find passing does illustrate the problem, and thats a normal part of racing. I'm hoping that it all just magically changes at release. With news of an entire division dedicated to A.I, I can only hope that some how... its hard to get A.I truncated for demo's, but knowing what other titles have shown in demo's, I can't imagine it takes up an entire bluray disc. I don't think its too much to question, considering the unquestionable quality that GT has seemed to be able to pull off with the series. Good A.I or improved A.I would definitely be instantly obvious, and you know full well it would be GTP headline news.
