Tokyo-a-go-go!

Start you engines for the 11th race of the Weekly Endurance Series.
We will be taking the BMW M3 GTR Race Car for a spin around the infamous Tokyo R246 course.
This combo is straight from the keyboard of Marty (Delfino) and as such I take no blame for any trials or tribulations caused by it.
But the direction of travel is all me, and so is the tyre-wear setting, so you could have a go about those things but it won't make
any difference! :sly:

The time limit for the event is 60 minutes, and you will send your times in reflecting the number of laps you have
managed to complete within that time, but, giving the time taken to complete the next full lap after that time period.

So, if you have managed 45 laps within the 60 minute window, but your final time for 46 laps is 60’27.xxx.
Then you will send: 45 laps completed in under 60 mins, 46 laps completed in 60’27.xxx as your time.
If you finish only 43 laps in under the 60 minute limit, you will send 43 laps completed under 60 minutes, but 44 laps in 6x’xx.xxx
Etc,Etc.
You will get your total time to complete the number of laps you have done, by stopping the race after you go over the line
at the end of the lap after the 60 min limit is up.
You then save the replay, and the time on the replay file is exactly the time you crossed the line at the end of your final lap.

The winner will be decided on who has the highest number of laps and/or lowest time if the lap count is tied.

As this is a longer event, the time scale is increased to 12 days as the 5 days till next Sunday (caused by my delays, sorry! )
is too short for this type of race.

Great car/track combo {even if it was Dels suggestion} .. can't wait to get into ths one .. 👍 .. im giving up lawn bowls training to give this extra time .

For those who havent driven the GTR for awhile ; your going to marvel {again} how well balanced it is .

One of my favorite race cars and my third favorite city course after SSR5 and Monaco. When I first started GT with GT3, Tokyo was the very first course I got around clean. And Marty you're dead on about the balance, almost makes you feel like you're cheating when you're in that beauty, should be a very very close race...again! Being how close most of us are with each other it's gonna come down to strategy...hey that's probably why I did well at Motorland ,it was a no-brainer.

EDIT: I just read the whole race rules....REVERSE? How could you Neil, you sadistic B....oy !

I LOVE Tokyo reversed. So much fun, but as for how well balanced the GTR is...I dunno, pushes if you ask me.

Ran 7 or so laps and was seeing low 1'32.xxx by the end of my mini run.

I hate reverse Tokyo, oh well guess I'll learn to like it once I master it. Did about 10 laps but not comfortable at all yet 1'33.xxx is best so far but that should go down.....I hope.

I just did a full race.

Im not too sure what exactly i can and cannot talk about in here, so im off to read the other race threads and i'll be back with whatever youre allowed to disclose. 👍

Ok, back...

I have some questions, and some info on my run, and some possible unpostable stuff, which im hoping Neil will advise me to delete if necessary.

Firstly: How will the winner be decided? Is it number of laps completed?, or the time closest to 60 mins, or the person with the most laps, and the fastest lap? or what? :boggled:

Secondly: there is no specification that i can see for fuel use, so is it to be switched off, or can we leave it on and fuel our cars as we see fit? Leaving the car to get too low will lead to a longer pit stop for some, so has to have an effect on strategy, though not necessarily in this particular race.
What's the ruling please?

Thirdly: I think its obvious to all and sundry, but im going to ask anyway: Can we have differing tyre compounds on the front and rear? :dunce:

Ok, now to some facts about what i just did on R246 reverse.

I wasnt too impressed with the AI to begin with, but after a few restarts, i managed to pass them all before exiting turn 1, so they were all behind me within a few seconds of starting, and therefore no longer an issue.
Until lap 15, when i came through the final chicane before the straight at full chat, and found a GT40 reversing away from the wall where she'd just spun:eek:
Narrowly missing that 🤬 i carried on.
I found the car burns the front tyres much quicker than the rears, but not enough to warrant having different compounds on each end.
Either way, it needs a regular pit stop, and i managed 3 before my time was up.
These didnt give me too many problems with the AI, as they seemed to be pitting as i was flying past, and they spent their time flying past while i was suspended in the air on invisible jax too.
Eventually though, i caught one at an inopportune moment, and nerfed her a bit, but got no penalty, so i carried on. (it was the same :censored:GT40)
around lap 25, i started to push for a fastest lap.
I hit 1'38.4 on lap 1, and brought that down to 1'30.something for the remainder of the race, doing 6 or so 1'29s throughout the course of the run, and mostly 1'30s and 1'31s when i wasnt concentrating. (its been a long day).
Its very easy to slip up on the last corner, miss your braking point, and instantly add a second to your time :ouch:

Ive been using 320 top speed, cos 330 was too long to give you a good grip, and 310 was too short for the odd occasion when i caught an AI on the straight and drafted it.

So, fastest lap nailed, average laptimes maintained for a certain number of laps, no penalties, some AI contact, though not gratuitous, or beneficial, and 3 pit stops using Racing Mediums, gave me a final time and so many laps completed, which of course i cannot share with you guys (i thunk).

It was an enjoyable race, and one i may run again with some different tyre settings to see what i prefer.
I was most proud of despatching all the AI in turn 1, and this sets you up for a good race IMO.

Now, please let me know if ive said something i shouldnt. ( i didnt mean to :scared:)

And good luck everyone

:irked:👍

David,
You can talk about anything you like......except:

1: Fastest lap final split to more than second accuracy this time, as it's a long race.
2: Final race time.

All else is open season, you can even be as specific as you like with those times. ie 1'33.xxx, 1'33.2xx, 1'33.26x.

Hey, I just work here. I don't make the rules.

Oh, hang on, yes I do!

Just did one race tonite myself, but only got to 53'30 and was pushed into a love tap with the angled bit of armco on the outside exit of the final corner. No penalty from that impact, but got thrown off that angle and into the armco on the other side of the track......and got a pen.
So, race over.
Load up a good FPS with lots of gore & big weapons.
Kill the crap out of some really hard bad-guys (play it on highest difficulty)

Then, come and have a chat while the misses is asleep.

Race again tomorrow.

Neil

EDIT after seeing David's post.

1st, the winner will be decided on both laps, and times.
If a driver manages more laps in the 60 mins than anyone else he/she is the winner. If there is no clear winner in that manner, then the driver with the fastest time, of the guys on the same lap count wins.
Basically like the Le Mans 24, or would be if ever two or more cars do the same number of laps in that race.

2nd, fuel as you wish! There have never been fueling rules in any of the series that I have been in, in all the time i've been doing the long races.

I like to get the calculator out and work out a fuel strategy as well as a tyre strategy for most of the longer races. Reduce weight and fueling times for a more even race. Working out that you can do 3 stints of under 15 mins on mediums before having to fuel up, and that each minute uses 1.78 litres per, means you can stop the fueling at the right point to give just enough for the 60 mins plus 1 lap.

3rd, sorry should have edited that one back in.
You can use any combination of RM's and RS's only, all 4 of them.
Neil

:grumpy:..REVERSE !..:grumpy: mumble mumble .. grrrrrrrr

I know what you mean there Marty, but the forward direction is done to death!

I don't remember having done the reverse direction at all in the 3 years I've been driving on here, certainly never in the long-race format. Maybe in the WRS, but not here.

Reverse makes for a more balanced track IMO, the hard bits are easier and the easy bits are a little harder in this direction.
I just get a little sick of the same tracks in the same directions over and over again. It's a pity none of the RL tracks can be reversed, can you imagine Le Sarthe or Nurburgring in the reverse direction?

When i raced in the real world {karts}-{man would i love to get into a rotax max and race again} i did better on tracks that ran anti-clockwise . Having said that .. there a a few tracks in GT4 that i enjoy much more in reverse mode .. eg New York . Tokyo is my favourite city circuit ; there are some corners which give a real buzz when hitting the 'perfect' line , but this track in reverse does not imo have the same flow to it {tried about 40 laps last night} Agreed , Tokyo reverse will make for a more balanced challenge though .

Lets hope the Nurb comes in reverse mode with GT5 .. 👍
Sarthe reverse .. 👎

PS : Just for the heck of it , i'm going to run Tokyo for 60 minutes IN BOTH MODES {forward and reverse}
PSS : Will always fully support any race format the race director decides upon .. :)

Nurb in reverse in GT5?

Not a chance. :grumpy:

Even though id like to see it, (ive driven it in reverse a few times, and i loved it, but the no entry sign does my head in) its never going to happen, because too many people would say "ahhh that GT5 is soooo unrealistic, i mean, you can even drive the famous Nurburgring in reverse!" wouldnt they.
Haters.

:irked:👍

I ran la Sarthe I in reverse once. It was interesting because the elevation change prior to the first chicane is much more evident. Also, it made me feel a bit dizzy. It's amazing how the opposite direction with any track can change the dynamics of the race so drastically.

ERacer

Anyone else run this race full distance yet .. theres no way i can do it in three stops .

For this old racer its 4 stops on mediums {front right gets a battering} which will get me -- laps though theres a second strategy to try .

VEXD .. your race description WAS in reverse ? .. have no idea how you only stopped threee times , unless of course it was you who taught Neil how to be TYREKING .

Not me Marty, don't think I've had a lap without hitting a wall of spinning out, I hate reverse here. I've only spent 20 minutes so far so I may start liking it after I'm comfortable. The first 10 times I ran Monaco I hated it but once I learned the course it became one of my favorite city courses. I'll give it a complete hour tonight, it'll be my excuse for not taking the wife out to dinner...Oh Neil, Cathy's gonna be mad at you buddy :)

Ahh! Don't worry, I'm getting used to dealing with disgruntled women.
Anne's been having a go a day lately, mad at the world and everyone in it, and it's all my fault.

Bring it on!;)

Neil

And it will always be your fault, wait till there are two of them:) You'll make it, I lived with 3 females for many years and I (barely) made it.

VEXD .. your race description WAS in reverse ? .. have no idea how you only stopped threee times , unless of course it was you who taught Neil how to be TYREKING .

Hmmm, i thought i'd stopped three times....

Let me look at the replay again, it was late at night after a long day, maybe i was mistaken.

I'll just check at warp speed..........

:irked:👍

Ok, something horrible has just happened....
Im checking the replay right, at double speed or whatever, and i get near the end, im counting laps to see how many i did, and all of a sudden, in the middle of a lap, the replay just finished. I hadnt even crossed the 60mins barrier, or started my last lap. :grumpy: 15 mins of watching this stuff on speed-vision is bad for you, and now i have to try again, and see if i get the same result.

I dont remember seeing a notice telling me the replay had finished recording whilst i was driving the other night, so why did that happen?

This is not good.

I can still work out what my lap total was, and of course i have my final time, but where is the end of my replay? 👎:irked:

In answer to your question Delfino, i pitted on the end of lap 10, 20 and 30.
On racing mediums all round, with the correct setup as far as i can see, so either youre burning tyres up matey, or more likely, im doing something wrong :dunce:

I'm just running through the replay again :yuck:
..................

Ok, so i watched it again, and it did it again. I slowed it down to normal speed near the end, and it finished in exactly the same place, roughly 3 mins from the finish of the race.
So i know what lap times i ran, and i know what number of laps i did before i crossed the line at 1 hour, and what the total was, but how could i prove it if i needed to?
The replay just ends :boggled:
Has this happened before in this series Neil?
I must say, its annoyed me quite a bit, cos i felt i had a strong race here for the first run, and now i dont appear to be able to prove it conclusively......

:irked:👍

Don't worry about proof David, you're a well known & trusted racer ( been a while now ain't it? )

The replay abruptly ending is quite common in the longer races, it is dependant upon the car and track as to how long you get. City tracks and Le Sarthe & the 'Ring tend to get shorter replays cos of the amount of data from impacts/off's/AI dickin around etc.

At the most I would ask for a pic of the replay file description in the theatre, and a pic of a screen with your fastest lap time displayed. And that, only if the time was vastly different from the majority.

Neil

p.s.
And I'm getting 9 laps till orange fronts on mediums, and comparable-ish times. So 3 stops is very doable! 👍

I feel better already!

Thanx Neil.

I thought id messed up with the setup then.
Dont want to waltz in here and start the WES career off badly by getting a muddy name.
Of course, i can provide any data you ask for, except the actual part of the replay where i cross the line at 1 hour+, so let me know if i need to get the Maxdrive out.

I would have needed a fourth pitstop, had i kept going for another few minutes, but you stipulated i should stop on the lap after 1 hour was up, which i did, and at that point, i'd pitted three times.

Good luck to all, im looking forward to reading someone elses write-up, so i have something to compare with.

Somebody do an hour please

:irked:👍

Del has done maybe 70 odd laps here and he's still dialing into the track .. ran a 4 stopper on mediums pitting every 8 laps ... looks like i am burning those front right tyres :grumpy: though it wouldnt be hard to get 9 laps out of them .

Lap times similar to VEXD .. happy to settle for second place going into the first corner , taking the lead before my favourite double apex {in the normal direction}
Had a similar scare with the GT40  surprised to see it motionless facing the opposite direction in the middle of the track coming off the right hander before the final turn into the finish straight .
Im going to try another two different strategies for this race , knowing i can do one lap better than my 1st attempt ... the target is 2 though .

Hope its a tight race for all those competing and we finish on the same lap 👍 Good luck everyone .

Del has managed to arranged a huge party after the race ; along with a rare appearance of the one and only DEEP PURPLE Jason Bonham couldn't make it otherwise LED ZEPPLIN would ahve done the honours {imagine seeing them live on the same bill in the late 70's .. omg}

Fly into the rising sun,
Faces, smiling everyone
Yeah, she is a whole new tradition
I feel it in my heart

My woman from Tokyo
She makes me see
My woman from Tokyo
She's so good to me

Talk about her like a Queen
Dancing in a Eastern Dream
Yeah, she makes me feel like a river
That carries me away

My woman from Tokyo
She makes me see
My woman from Tokyo
She's so good to me

But I'm at home and I just don't belong ...

So far away from the garden we love
She is what moves in the soul of a dove
Soon I shall see just how black was my night
When we're alone in Her City of light

Rising from the neon gloom
Shining like a crazy moon
Yeah, she turns me on like a fire
I get high

My woman from Tokyo
She makes me see
My woman from Tokyo
She's so good to me

EDIT 1 : Dels beginning to hate the GT40 .. on my approach to the pitt lane for my second stop .. the GT40 decided to squeeze me fair square into the corner of the pitt wall :indiff::grumpy:

EDIT 2 : Just finished a 5 stopper {combination of RM's and RS's} which was 20 seconds faster than the 4 stop attempt . It's possible to get 9 laps out the mediums but it's pushing the front end so much on the 9th lap ; its not worth it {impossible to get 10 laps out RM's .. for me anyway} Was able to grab the lead at the 1st corner {holding the inside line ; you think theres not enough room but when you get to the corner .. A1 makes room !} My fastest lap was assisted with some slipstreaming by the same GT40 :) Running mixed tyres is an option but does not make the car any faster {gets unstable in the fast corners}

After over 150 laps in Tokyo Dels happy with the result so far .. reverse ain't so bad when you get used to it .

PS : If anyone can complete even 41 laps .. they are a 100% complete genius .

:crazy:Now for my attempt at 60 mins in the normal direction .

Ahhhh an update!

Ive been looking for a new post, but thought id check to see what the last thing you said was (memory not so good these days) and youve done some good updating

It loox like i will be on a steep learning curve about the art of endurance racing this week, as i assumed that if i did a fast lap, every lap, and managed to only pit three times, then i would be in with a chance of scoring highly.... but it loox like more strategy may be needed.

Perhaps i wont submit my times for this race, and just see where i would have stacked up.

Its very very intruiging :)

:trouble:👍

Hey!
You can't pussy-out like that Vexd! :grumpy:

Winning ain't the be-all and end-all in the WES, it's the taking part, chat, and the occasional upset, that's making it work so far.
Proven reputation as a fast driver in the WRS is a fair thing to have, but over here in the LRS forum it don't mean nothin'.
And we don't care!

We do the long races because we like to, and because there is more to think about than just stringing fast laps together. Tyre and fuel strategies come into play, pushing for fast laps v's tyre conservation is an important balancing act to learn.
Sharing strategies, times (full and fastest lap) and tips is very common, even if it may be in the 'back-channels'.

You seem to be enjoying it, so stick with it and submit your times.

You never know?

Neil 👍

VEXD .. Your laps times , combined with a 3 stopper will come mighty close to the top step of the podium . Hmmmm .. i wonder what his lap times would be on RS's ?

Must say ive throughly enjoyed the WES and look forward to every race .. the timed events are my favourite though..👍

Ahhhh you guys get me wrong....

If you want a submission, i'll give you a submission.

As for the fast laps versus tyre conservation balancing act Neil, well thats what i was talking about! Its a steep learning curve, and i think im on it!

Im looking forward to adding a whole new level of gameplay and a fresh depth to my understanding the ins and outs of racing online through this series.

Del, you want a laptime on softs?

Gimme a few minutes....

:irked:👍

This is going to be interesting .. in the meantime how do you guys get away with more than 100x100 pixels on your avatar ?

erm, right.....

I setup race conditions, and had the 50 laps and the right AI etc, and then instead of running mediums i ran softs front and rear.

Ive got a time i wont be using in my final race, so i'll give you down to one thousandth for my fastest lap after running 4 (the tyres were perfect for lap 4).

1'27.97x

Any good?
Should i be using softs......
:irked:👍

This is going to be interesting .. in the meantime how do you guys get away with more than 100x100 pixels on your avatar ?

Well I'm Lifetime Premium, so's Drew, so we get bigger 'tars anyway. But I don't know about anyone else's.

VEXD's 'tar is 120 x 90 & 3.48kb & your's is 100 x 100 & 3.66kb.

I seem to remember that the size of the file is slightly more important than the size of the pic.
