Has anyone else noticed that the only wet track in GT5 that actually has a wet looking surface is Special Stage Route 7? The tarmac on all the other tracks never looks wet even when it's raining hard! I'm guessing they ran out of processing power for the better tracks, looks awful imo, what do you think?

Track looks wet.

Rain effects are pretty bad all round in my opinion. The water on the windscreen looks absolutely awful.

Yeah, I think PD really dropped the ball on the weather system. For something they touted as being so amazing (calculations based on pressure and temperature? highly doubtful), they really didn't present an end product that's appealing.

Heck, I was doing a race around Monza in the "rain" and the only times I knew it was raining was at the start of the race and when I looked back to see how close my opponents were and saw the drops flying backwards. The road surface looked completely dry and there's no noticeable sound feedback, either.

The second video, being from someone filming their TV with a video camera, isn't a very good example of bad rain effects.

Still, I'm not a big fan of rain in this game, GTA 4 had a very good feel to the rain, GT5 only has it in some locations. But then again, time of day and overall environment do make a difference. Still, rain in the windshield and all that look not so good in my opinion.

That video is just bad quality man.

I did the AMG Challenge and thought the 'Ring looked great in the rain

The rain on the windscreen at night looks really good, but in the daylight it looks horrible & obscures the view far too much, they need to make it more more transparent for daytime too imo.

I was hoping for somekind of reflection mapping wet look on all tracks with weather, but it's just missing. It does look very strange when it stops raining & you have no idea whatsoever whether it's drying out or not.

:grumpy:

I'm pretty sure SSR7 has the same rain, and wet look, that the other tracks have, I presume the lights make it look better.

The PS3 can only do so much. it's already struggling to do what rain effects there are, I can tell mine is struggling some in the rain when all cars are together.

The PS3 cores are cursing you.. :-)

Slightly related, but i'm happy now.
Raced around Nurburgring in the wet/night version of the track the other day. Started out darkish with rain, then the rain stopped, sun came out and after about 15 mins or more the track was actually dry! I had no idea wet tracks did dry, so have a lot more respect for the game now. :D

Overall i'm happy with how the wet tracks look. 👍

I think, they didn´t add reflections on wet surface because of the hardware limit.

Try out to race Gran Turismo Rally, on hard difficulty on tarmac, it will rain at some stages and the track is wet and reflecting. But the reflections you see are horrible pixelated....so maybe they didn´t add it on all tracks.

The whole game does not fit to the antiquated PS3. The PS3 is completely overstrained. GT5 is kind of a preview of how it will look on the PS4.

lol antiquated......the most powerful console ever is already antiquated.

The job of a game designer is to design within the hardware's confines, you can't overdo it and blame the console of not being powerful enough.

I guess they should just release this on PC then, then let some people mod the game, most of the design flaws might be gone within a week.

I think the wet tracks are fine. I just wish all tracks had day/night wet/dry capabilities.

How can it be antiquated, when there isn´t even a PS4 or PS5. The PS1 is antiquated, but not an actual console without any incomer.

Play Uncharted 2 and you will see, what your PS3 can reach.

The real annoying thing is that it doesn't tell you how wet it is either. I can just about live with the fact that there's no discernible difference between chucking it down and light drizzle, and that a track under 6 inches of standing water looks the same as a dry track but it would be nice if they were to have a status indicator of some description.

Pop quiz: Track looks bone dry do I use wets, inters or slicks?

A) trick question - answer is anybody's guess

I blame sony as they are the ones who wanted 3d, 60fps and 1080p. The game struggles with all the extra weight of this useless crap IMO

I can usually tell how wet it is by how much spray is coming from the back of the car when i look behind.

They may be doing the pressure and temperature calculations but the visuals are really limited by what the PS3 can do. It is amazing they even got some kind of weather system in on such limited hardware.

f1 2010 effects are 10x times better.

That game struggles to run at 30FPS at 720P, while GT5 has to do the effects at 1080p at around 60FPS.

The PS3 in terms of graphics hardware was already old and 50% slower compared to a high-end PC when it launched. GT5 is the most technically advanced game on the PS3 IMO, it is pushing so many effects at such a high frame rate at a high resolution, I can't think of any other game on the PS3 that does this. Only Wipeout HD is the other racing game that runs at 60FPS but it does not really have effects that will reduce frame rate a lot like tyre smoke and weather effects. The graphical flaws in the game such as shadows are due to the limitation of hardware. Much time must have been wasted in getting the game to run on the PS3 with all the effects, they even had to use optimization ideas from GT PSP to use on the PS3 as it suffers from very little RAM, less than what modern smartphones have.

Play Uncharted 2 and you will see, what your PS3 can reach.

Uncharted 2 runs at 720p at 30FPS, try pushing that detail at twice the frame rate and you will see compromises have to be made. The PS4 if released next year will at a minimum be 1000% more powerful than the PS3 in terms of graphics power, and processing wise they might only improve it slightly by being about 200%-400% more powerful to cut costs.

Next-generation will be the best generation for a long time, PC gaming will not be needed to play games well as all the consoles will be able to play games at 1080p at 60FPS and people will push the boundaries with the high frame rate in mind. Full HD will be the maximum resolution of most peoples home TVs then and developers like PD will be running games at equal resolutions and frame rates so it will be easier to spot the talented game developers. I believe PD will blow other racing game developers away with what they can achieve with an equal footing.
