What Aids are cheating?

If you need certain aids to drive well, then use them. It's that simple.

Although I find it strange that in the Nascar Special Event you can turn ABS off and go faster!?

BMW's suite of controls is most sophisticated in the X6. They have variable anti-roll bar control, damper control, fully electronic LSD control to trim cornering lines (instead of just braking).

However... BMW's variable ratio steering, though, does not, to my knowledge countersteer for you.

I hate this. How some modern cars are starting to do more and more interfering with the driver. If the driver needs to have a car steering for him or her, perhaps they shouldn't be driving such a car in the first place.

The seamless shifting for manual transmissions is another example of an overlooked driving aid. I think you can disable this by purchasing a wheel with a clutch pedal, but how many people just hammer on the gas and use the finger flappers to shift when accelerating? This feature can easily shave a second off your 0-60 time.

I sometimes wonder whether some aids are there to help lesser drivers and maybe DS3 users or are just gimmicks. It would be interesting to at some point hear from people, who have used both the DS3 and a wheel, about the effects of aids other than TCS and ABS.

+1 on mentioning the DS3/Sixaxis users. I use the Sixaxis and I would also like to see a comparison between using a Sixaxis vs. a steering wheel.

I don't use ASM ever. It slows the car down too much.

I use only the amount of Traction Control and ABS that I need to drive the car properly. I like high ABS so I can brake and turn at the same time. Traction control on 1 is sufficient for 90% of the cars in the game.

If the car is too hard to control even with TCS up around 5 or 6, Skid Recovery is applied post haste and yes, I can get better times with it, but not even close to the better steering wheel drivers.

I hate Active Steering because it jerks the car in the opposite direction I'm trying to go. I don't see myself ever getting used to it, so it's always off.

The driving line is useless to me. I used it at the beginning, but noticed that it is based on the speed of the car, not the car's abilities. Some cars brake better/worse and renders the braking points useless. Finding your own braking points for each car is better than losing time in a corner because you applied the brake sooner or later than you should have... just because the red told you to.

Cheats? I don't consider any of them cheats. They are there if you need them, but try to find the best match for your abilities/controller/steering wheel that you are using.

I'm pleased that the vast majority don't think the aids are cheating. I expected there to be a vocal group of militants who think you shouldn't be playing the game if you have to use aids. In real life I drive an 08 MX-5 which has very few gimmicks on it except ABS. No traction control, no LSD,etc. It has been modded pretty heavily and handles exactly the way you would expect a RWD sports car to handle - which is very predictable in both a good and bad way. I recently decided to turn off the drivers aids in GT5 - with ABS set to 1 - and found that suddenly most cars seemed so much more alive an performed like my real car. This has instantly improved the game for me and I have even started dialing back the mods so that my cars don't instantly crush the opposition and I actually have to race for position. If you can do without the driver's aids great, but if not it doesn't make you less of a driver. I thought I couldn't keep a car on the road without driving aids, but I was just relying on the electronic nanny.

My other observation is the driving line. I know all the tracks and can drive them without the driving line easily, but I keep it on all the time because I find that the situational awareness in GT5 is nothing remotely like real life. When you are racing a real car you really have 360 degrees of SA continuously. You can stretch your neck to see over a rise, you can lean either way to augment your view, etc. GT5 by comparison is like driving through a letterbox. It's extremely easy to not pay attention after 5 or 6 laps and lose sight of the twisties on a flat track. I find the driving line helps keep my head in the game. The 10 laps of Suzuka in the latest seasonal track is a good example. After a couple of laps it is just dead boring. I don't really have to worry about smashing my ride to pieces or killing myself and next thing I know I'm running wide. On a real track you are in the environment, not watching it unfold on a flat screen three feet in front of you. Anyway, that's my lengthy (sorry) two cents. BTW, I drive with a DFGT.

For offline racing - the only opinion that matters is your own. The aids are put there by PD to be used in any way you see fit to enjoy the game. For me, it is everything off except ABS=1 and TCS=0/1 depending on the car. I feel like I am cheating when i turn skid recovery on - for example, dozens of attempts at the Lotus Top Gear challenge with a best result of 2nd. 1st attepmt with it on in 1st place by Chicago on the 2nd lap. Technically not cheating because I used the aids available, but I felt like I took a cheap win.

For online racing - as long as you abide by the rules set by the owner of the room, none of the aids are cheating. However, if the room says no SRF, and you use it = cheating

A little bit of topic, but you can still cheat lecense tests by wall rubbing.
A hard hit will disqualfy you, but a gentle wall rub goes unnoticed.

Special license at Toykyo in the Histerical car you can wall rub to advantage.
What is funny are the two big black marks on the cars bodywork you can see on the cut menu at the end. It knows you wall rubbed ( because you have the rub marks) but it does not fail you.
