We get lots of stick insects in our neck of the woods, and they're a little creepy to kill.
Why do you kill stick insects?

They won't harm anything...
What's kind of weird in my case is that I'm not afraid of insects at all, but I am afraid of arachnids and their kin (I forget specifically what the families are for centipedes, scorpions, and the like).
Even then, there are differences – I'm not scared in any way shape or form by small spiders (I'll even let the jumping spiders crawl on me, because they're interesting to watch), but I absolutely can't stand tarantulas. I'm afraid one day a tarantula will either fall from the ceiling onto my head, or will be on the ground and run up and chase me.
I'm also scared silly of scorpions, even though tthe kind that live around here are small and inflict a sting that isn't much worse than a wasp's. That brings me up to another interesting thing (gawd, this post is stupidly long) – Most of my fears don't seem to be triggered from bad events that have happened to me. I was stung a dozen times by several wasps on a camping trip, and I've been stung by a couple bees, but I don't fear either... in fact, if someone is annoying me with their shrieking by a wasp sitting near their lunch, I'll usually scoot it onto my hand and move it away. But, I'm scared of scorpions and centipedes, despite never having had an encounter with their stingers. I swear though that someday one or the other will fall on my head.
I'm scared of heights... anything connected to the ground. When the WTC was still standing some years ago, I went near the top floor, and when I stood at one of the windows, I was absolutely terrified. Mostly, I was afraid that I'd fall through the glass and plunge to my death. I also get scared by two-story buildings, and the mall. I'm not afraid of heights from things not connected to the ground though, like airplanes.
And, one of my worst fears is of the dark, and of someone breaking into our house at night and killing me (or at least the unpleasant meeting that would ensue if he entered my room with a knife or gun in hand). I'm the kind of person who won't get any sleep all night if I hear one little noise coming from the opposite side of the house, because I'll be afraid that it's someone breaking in.
