Do you like ...But Seriously more than No Jack Required? I'm not a huge Phil Collins fan, nor do I know his discography well, but I remember he had these back to back incredibly successful albums in the 80s. I like a handful or two of his songs, but to be honest I never really even tried getting into his work. So, it wouldn't really be fair for me to rate either of the albums.

Yes. Don't get me wrong, 'Sussudio' is a triumph, but I love ...But Seriously in its entirety. It may falter with individual tracks but that's more than made up for by the album in its composition--best consumed as a whole. It's a shame he got so harangued over the Genesis fiasco; I know he had more in him.

Loving the avatar--I was fortunate to have seen him live before he passed.

I'll have to give ...But Seriously a full listen. I have a paid Google Music account. The album must be available there. I never really knew the details of the Genesis break-up/implosion/explosion...whatever it really was. In fact, I really don't know anything about Genesis, I'm embarrassed to admit!

The mid-to-late 1960s thru 1980 is my favorite period of music. Floyd is my favorite, but I have an extremely diverse taste in music. I really should look into the history of Genesis. The true Prog Rock bands - I kind of jumped over them. I don't consider Floyd to be true Prog Rock. Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer...those are true Progressive bands - it's in the musical structure. It's funny, because I do like a lot of songs from those four bands I just mentioned, yet I never went out and bought a single album from any of them when I was a teenager.

Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel and the keyboard dude. All four of them masters at their craft. And all four in one band...Jesus. It's almost mind boggling that I would skip these bands. I don't think Collins was with them in the beginning though. What a talented bunch. Why does that always cause the most discontent?
 
Egos. Indeed, Phil Collins replaced John Mayhew and 'the keyboard dude' would be Tony Banks.

I'm inclined to agree that Pink Floyd wasn't really prog early on, more proto-prog (which isn't really prog, just an evolution of psychedelic in the space that acts like It's A Beautiful Day and Nirvana--the original Nirvana--occupy) and space rock, but I think later albums with David at the wheel were definitively prog. It's that era of Pink Floyd, Genesis, Planet P Project/Tony Carey and Kevin Gilbert's projects that got me into earlier progressive from the likes of Yes, Kansas, Camel, ELP, etc.

The 80s are what I identify with the most--they say what you were listening to at 13-14 years old never leaves you, even if you develop other tastes--but working at a record store in college certainly informed my current tastes. Something I still listen to on a very regular basis is the first CD I bought (despite not actually owning my own player at the time--my brother had one): David & David's Boomtown in 1987.

Speaking of which...

 
I've heard the same thing, about developing musical preference at that age. I get turned on or go through phases with different bands or artists from time to time, but I always seem to have the same core genres that I hop around.

Collins wasn't with them in the beginning. Genesis was an awesome band, both versions were pretty good. They went soft pop a little in the 80's but that was still pretty decent and still holds up.

I'm a huge Floyd fan as well, meddle is my favorite Floyd album, but I really love Animals as well. I saw Roger waters in '99, 3 rows from the stage and it was amazing. He played most of their great old stuff from wish you were here, meddle and animals, not just stuff off of The Wall(which is still awesome). That's probably one of the best concerts I've seen.

I like a huge variety of music, but most of it is pre 2000, and a lot from the 60's and 70's.

 


One of my best old records in terms of condition, and a great album musically.

David Gates is right up there with Peter Cetera (Chicago) among the all-time great male vocalists.

Just discovered this band. Listening to them the first time takes me back to the days where i just discovered Nirvana and other bands that became my all time favourite. I don't know why i feel there's a Nirvana-ish vibe in their songs. I love it though.
