Daniel Johnston - To Go Home



Daniel Johnston was an outsider artist and musician who rose to fame when Kurt Cobain was seen wearing a t-shirt with the artwork from his album Hi, How Are You? Sadly, Johnston passed away today following a heart attack at the age of 58 years.​

I can't get enough of the album Departure Songs by We Lost the Sea. I think it was recommended to me by YouTube because of the No Man's Sky soundtrack that I was constantly listening to. The band lost their singer to suicide and wrote this album instrumentally in his memory. Here is the album description:
We Lost The Sea are an Instrumental band from Sydney Australia. Crushing guitar noise with dark melodic atmospherics.

Departure Songs is inspired by failed, yet epic and honourable journeys or events throughout history where people have done extraordinary things for the greater good of those around them, and the progress of the human race itself. This is a celebration and a tribute. Each song has it’s own story and is a soundtrack to that story.

This is our 3rd album and our first instrumental album. We’re exploring new ground and exploring ourselves in the past 2 and a bit years since Chris went on his own journey. It’s slightly bleak with shimmers of hope and layers of emotion. It’s a tribute and a catharsis of emotion and honesty.

Hard to believe it's coming up on six months since Ranking Roger passed.

I just discovered this artist: Jim Sullivan. He made two albums. First was U.F.O. in 1970 on the small Monnie label, but it was made with top of the line LA session musicians.


The second album from 1972 was self-titled and released on Playboy Records.


He disappeared in 1975 and was never seen again. In 2011 Light in the Attic Records re-released U.F.O. on CD and LP, but not, for some reason, his second album. They're both excellent. It's a shame he couldn't get signed to a major label considering singer-songwriters like him were all the rage in the early '70s.
