Now you've connected to the internet, the PS3 itself wants to update some bits as well, that's why it's asking for sys update (probably PS Store).
Turn back on, log in by pressing your name (account).
When logged in, go left in the main PS3 menu to the second column from the left. Attaché case picture with 'settings' underneath. Go up one to 'system update' and hit X. Hit X again when asks 'via internet'.
Let it do that. When your son comes back. Ask him about freeing up some space so you can then update GT6 to the current Version 1.11.
You or he may have lots of media taking up memory, or you both may have old games on there you are willing to delete.
You must do this mate. Not like in the old days when we got complete games, bugs an all, most games I find these days are not complete at launch on purpose, and GT6 is the most incomplete of all the GT titles thus far, but it's been paraded (with the help of the vision project) as an evolving organism updating and adding content almost throughout its life, but maybe not the time frame they were hoping. For some folks who've had the game since launch this has been quite a painful experience, waiting for stuff promised about a year ago. If your enjoying the game, I'd say stay connected. Apparently some of the bigger stuff is imminent. Missing out on some good stuff already. Think it will take a while mind. Get the young-star onto it.
