If you need to carry a cello, the MX-5 is out. You could possibly fit it with the top on if you completely unbolt the passenger seat, and the only way it's fitting in the trunk is if you cut the floor out of the trunk and leave your spare at home.

For a cellist, a first-generation Fit with a stick is an awesome car. Awesome to drive. Awesomely cheap to own. Possibly within your price range. Only thing cheaper on gas than a Fit are a Civic VX and a Geo Metro, which are definitely within your price range but possibly older than you.

It's not "fast", but you wouldn't know it from the wind whistling past the A-pillars at 80 mph. And few cars can cut a rug as well as the Fit. Maybe the Mazda2, but that has less cargo space and there are no secondhand ones within your range yet.

And it's easy to countersteer. Perhaps that will delay your first crash, perhaps not, but it's good to know.

By the way, I was recently with my uncle and he had a Honda Civic '00 Hatchback for 9 years... He told me that it was at £300 - £600 scrappage.. But when the Volvo V30 R-Design came out he got £4000 off the Volvo with the Civic. Whether that is any help or not, but yeah. Like I said and will say a lot.. Buy Japanese! Even though I drive German. -.-
